Roller coaster of a day! New Update 2-9

2-9-16 Update:

**We had a follow-up ultrasound today and got great news! They confirmed Parvo virus (hand/foot/mouth of fifths disease) so I must have gotten it somewhere and it went to baby. This at least gave us a reason why baby had gotten so sick and therefore a way to treat it! The rate of blood flow to the brain showed that baby is not anemic and there has been a dramatic improvement in the amount of fluid around baby's body! There is still a good amount in the abdomen, but they expect that to improve as the next few weeks goes on. We'll check in with them weekly with an ultrasound to track the improvement of the fluid and to ensure baby doesn't go anemic again (in which case they'd do another fetal transfusion). But, baby should continue to improve and get completely rid of the virus and therefore be rid of any illness! It is so nice to be able to breathe again! <3

So for those that saw my story last week, here is a bit of an update!

We started our appointment by meeting with a genetic counselor who explained that our baby was in a very dangerous state of health. We then went into an ultrasound whew they confirmed that there wa ms way too much fluid in multiple parts of the baby and the doctor called it Non-Immune Hydrops which is incurable and leaves baby with very little chance of survival. We spent the next hour working through the very real possibility of losing our baby at any point and time.

We we did decide to do the amniocentesis in case that could provide information on things we could try to save babies life. While they were prepping for that, they noticed an increased amount of blood flow to the babies brain. Another doctor was called in and he explained that this is often connected to the baby being anemic which would have been caused by baby trying to unsuccessfully fight off a virus that I must have picked up somewhere. (I work with kids and thei runny noses all day so not a surprise there) He then explained that in order to attempt to save baby he needed to check the blood in the umbilical cord to verify that baby is anemic and if so they could give baby a blood transfusion.

So, we had him check the blood, baby was visibly anemic so they gave baby a blood transfusion. At the end the doctor was very optimistic in that baby's chance of survival had just gone from pretty much 0 to "pretty good".

We we have another appointment on Tuesday to see if baby's anemia has improved and if then the fluid around the body had decreased (as severe anemia can cause extra fluid to build up). Still scary and still a chance that this doesn't completely solve the problem but much better prognosis than the one we were given this morning.

Thank you to everyone for your kind words, thoughts and prayers! Please know I think of all of you often!

  • Well it's amazing that something like that can show up and be treatable. If it works, the prognosis is obviously so much better than it was before. Crossing all fingers and toes for you that baby feels better soon.

Thank you everyone for the support! Every time I feel LO move I could cry (from happiness), just hoping to continue feeling the movement until Tuesday and that we see what we need to then!

@parsonsperson - It's pretty ridiculous. They first tested baby's blood through the umbilical cord, so they were able to use an ultrasound to get a needle into a vein of the umbilical cord. The first sample came out looking like "pink koolaid" as my H described it confirming that baby is/was anemic. Once they confirmed the anemia, they used the same needle to pump blood into baby. My H said that by the third sample, baby's blood looked normal...Pure craziness what they can do these days, but so thankful they can! It definitely had it's risks but without it baby wouldn't have survived much longer, so we're hoping all works out!

@VikingGirl12 - I was trying to get that to be my siggy! But failed...great minds think alike ;) Good 'ole bacon!
