Ruptured cyst - first time and scary

Ladies,
It seems today that I've experienced my first ruptured ovarian cyst. I have had no previous symptoms or any reason to believe I have ongoing cyst problem.
I am currently on my period, CD3.
Woke up with some dull left pelvic pain but it was nothing major and my period itself seemed normal for CD3. By 11am I was doubled over in the bathroom at work, and had what the doc called a semi-faint because of the pain. It was honestly one of the scariest moments of my life; not helped by the fact I was staring at myself in a big mirror while it was happening....the colour just left my face in an instant, and I looked like a ghost.

Gathered myself enough to get back to my office, call my dad (DH is out of town....to see Bruce Springsteen, little bugger), and shuffled to the ER.
the pain subsided within an hour but omg. That hour of pain was unreal.
ER Doc felt around my tummy, did a pregnancy and bladder infection test (both negative), and is not worried about anything serious. She also ruled out appendix issues and of course with a negative pregnancy test we are satisfied it is not a miscarriage, which was my number one concern.
Cysts just happen, to quite a lot of us apparently. She didn't even draw a connection of the cyst to my recent miscarriages.

has anyone experienced a ruptured cyst before? Especially after a MC? Would appreciate any insight from the real world.

My period stopped in its tracks for most of the day, and now I'm spotting. Not at all my normal for CD3, usually medium flow.
just praying this doesn't repeat itself or further screw with my cycles.
following up with GP ASAP but probably won't get far with that. Already have an appt in April with an OB.

Re: Ruptured cyst - first time and scary

  • @megsbrock Sounds painful! I've had cysts on my ovaries, but I've never had one rupture that I know of. Sorry you had to go through that! I can iimagine it was scary.

  • Ugh, sorry you went through this. I had a similar experience, but it was never confirmed as that. My doctor's theory was a ruptured corpus luteum cyst as that month I had a super long luteal phase (19 days), but all negative pregnancy tests. On the day it happened I started to get some mild cramping and then all of a  sudden experienced the most intense pain. TMI here, but I actually fell off the toilet seat and was writhing around on the floor. I too was ghost white, sweating profusely and literally groaning in pain. An hour or so later the pain went away and I was OK, but kind of in shock as to what had just happened. I went to the doctor's the next day and he thought it was either the ruptured luteal cyst as I got my period in conjunction with the violent pain or possibly some endometriosis (which I've never been told I'd had before/had symptoms). I was scheduled for some testing, but ended up getting pregnant with my son that next cycle.
  • Thanks ladies. <3
@BornReady thanks for sharing your experience...sorry you had to go through it, and very interesting indeed. There are some similarities there. I'm so glad to hear that after that experience, you got pregnant right away with a healthy pregnancy.
