Paci and sleep

Since I'm going back to work next week I'm trying to get LO out of my bed. I EBF so co sleeping worked as he eats every 2 hours and I needed sleep. Since now he can do a 3 hour or 4 hour stretch I'm putting him in the pack n play next to me (with hopes that if he can do that I can get him in his own room) my problem now is he wakes up every 45 minutes needing me to put his paci back in. I'm putting it in but then caving at 2am and letting him sleep in bed with me until 7am bc I need some sleep! Do I keep getting up and putting the paci in?  Let him CIO? I'm dying for sleep and my bed back!

Re: Paci and sleep

  • Can you try and soothe him without the paci?  (Patting, rubbing head, etc)I find my LO actually sleeps more soundly without the binkie.  If it's not helping him self soothe back to sleep, maybe try without and see what happens.

  • You could also try doing a feeding instead during one of those times.  My LO will accept a paci a couple of times but spit it out after about 10 minutes or so.  After one or two of these times I will try feeding her instead.  She will generally knock right out for a solid amount of time after that with no pacifier.  It's sometimes hard to realize when they're at the beginning of a growth spurt, at a new stage and wanting to eat more, or just hungry at a weird time.  Hope this helps.
If there's something strange underneath the hood.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  If there's something weird and it don't look good.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  Immediately.  If it's new, painful, and possibly pregnancy related get your ass off the internet and call your doctor.  It's for your health and your child's.

  • I found that my son had gotten used to being warmer than usual because of sleeping next to me, and being a little cold while alone was what kept waking him up and needing a paci. So I've added an extra layer at night and that seems to have helped a lot.
  • He's waaaaay too young to CIO.
Maybe try it without the paci?
  • We went through this with LO when we transitioned him to his crib and had to play binky tag. We just stated trying to get him to sleep without one and after a week or so it worked. He sleeps a lot better without one.

This! LO sleeps better when toasty and now only uses the paci to fall asleep then it falls out. When she's cold, we play the paci game all night long too
  • I have this problem from time to time. I hold her until she sleeps with her pacifier. Once it falls out I hold her for another 10 minutes and put her in her crib and she sleeps through the night or until her next feeding. Putting her to sleep with her pacifier usually has us getting up over and over.
Maybe try that? Every baby is different so it's gotta be trial and error.

Seconding to keep baby warm!  We switched to fleece sleepers at night + a cotton sleep sack (or cotton sleeper + fleece sleep sack if she fell asleep before we could change her) and her sleep and binky use are majorly improved.  Now binkies are mostly for naps + "are you actually hungry or just fussy?" middle of the night wake-ups (but I have to be diligent if she falls asleep with it, when it falls out I have to grab it or she rolls her little face onto it and it wakes her back up!)
  • Our lo is obsessed with keeping her hands in her mouth ever since she discovered she has hands. We now go sans binky and instead use the swaddle up so she can suck on her hand through the swaddle. Bedtime has been so much easier because we never have to run back into the bedroom to pop her binky in!
  • Ha-ha @smnewby ours is the same with her hands! I've been trying to transition her out of the swaddle so I started leaving one arm out at night and last night I woke up to her sucking on her hand, but the one that had been swaddled! She had worked it completely out of her pajama sleeve and out of the swaddle, seriously so cute!
