Infertility

Elevated Prolactin

My prolactin levels are consistently elevated, not scary levels but slightly above normal.  Based on my progesterone levels, I still ovulate. So my question is can this still be enough to have caused my six years of unexplained infertility? Based on what I have read, the biggest issue with elevated prolactin is anovulation. Are there any other side effects that could be preventing pregnancy? He's putting me on a low dose of something to normalize my levels and scheduling an mri to check my pituitary. I'm just so tired of getting my hopes up for nothing...

Is there somewhere else I should post where I would have better luck getting responses?

  • I have elevated prolactin as well. I have taken Parlodel, bromocriptine  is the generic, for the last 8 yrs. I did ovulate but not monthly before being put on it. My gynecologist did the testing and prescribing, my RE lowered my dose when we started treatment last yr. I ovulated every medicated cycle and even had regular cycles after my failed IUI cycles.
I am currently not on it because my rx expired and I am waiting for my appt with my gynecologist. I actually want to have my levels retested before starting the meds up again. We have make factor infertility but my irregular ovulation didn't help our situation either.
On the meds, my cycles ranged from 28-37 days, before starting the meds, I would often go 60+ days without a period and need provera to jump start my cycle.

     Good luck.
  • I have elevated prolactin as well! I take bromocriptine every night but it didn't help with ovulation. My OB thought that would help but after that was under control, I was also diagnosed with PCOS. My RE said that after my IVF cycle she is going to retest me and that sometimes after pregnancy it can resolve itself. I also had an MRI done with contrast but nothing was found.
