Blood after sex - like, a lot... Normal??

I'm 5 weeks 4 days. My husband and I have had sex a few times since getting our BFP, always with a bit of pink spotting after. But tonight there was quite a bit of blood when I was wiping after intercourse - red, not pink. It took a few wipes of soaked toilet paper to get it all. I have no cramping or pain though, and there was no tissue with the blood. Planning on calling my doc in the morning, but has anyone else had this much blood after sex? Trying not to worry...

Re: Blood after sex - like, a lot... Normal??

  • From my understanding there is a lot of blood flow going on down there when you are pregnant and that is it common to spot after sex because you can pop a blood vessel.

  • I'm sure your doctor will have some answers for you about this.  It sounds similar to what I experienced a few months ago before my doctor found and removed a (harmless but annoying) cervical polyp.  During that time I did a lot of google research and it sounds like it's really common to bleed after sex when pregnant because you are more sensitive due to all the hormonal changes.

  • Your cervix is much more sensitive right now, so that could have caused the bleeding. Definitely put a call into the doctor and let us know what he/she says!

  • It is super common to spot and have bright red blood after sex. The cervix is easily irritated when pregnant and has more blood flow. Definitely call your dr for reassurance and guidance. But usually if the bleeding is only after sex and stops soon after, it's just an irritated cervix.

Coughing, bearing down if constipated, sneezing, etc can all cause the cervix to bleed a little during pregnancy.

  •  Thank you so much, ladies. I have a call into my doctor, still waiting for her to call back. I'm sure it's fine, but I only got about three hours of sleep last night worrying about it.  I can't wait until the first trimester is over and I have a little more security! Feels so fragile...
  • Common, yes. Normal, no.

I usually abstain from sex until my first appointment. Usually my cervix is so sensitive that I bleed and freak myself out. My husband gets nervous as well. We just tend to make sex an infrequent thing until 2nd trimester. Just personal preference.

  • I have been getting pain and bleeding after sex, so my partner and i have decided to wait a bit before we do it again just incase but for me it was more pain and a little blood. My doctor said its perfectly normal but still i cant help but worry a little. Hope all is well for you but im sure things will be fine your probably just very sensitive
  • Ok so no more spotting today, just the blood last night. Both my doc & midwife say it doesn't seem like a miscarriage, but that we should abstain from sex for a few days to be safe. I think we'll abstain even longer to be sure. Bummer! I had no idea about this! Wish someone had told me... Anyway, I'm just glad things seem to be safe with baby. Thank you all again for your support, it helped a lot.
