cereals with formula?

I have questions about making baby cereal (specifically oatmeal) with formula... mostly, what to do about the fact that it tastes AWFUL. I made LO his first cereal tonight, and first I made it with formula (we bf and supplement) and it was gross. I tasted it first and thought it tasted awful, like chemicals, but I think the formula tastes nasty anyway and he drinks it up like crazy so I thought maybe the cereal would still work. Nope, hated it. So I made a second batch using breast milk, which went over WAY better.

I am not able to pump much, so I'm worried I won't always have enough breast milk to make his cereal with. Do any of you have this issue where LO doesn't like food made with formula? What about ef mommies?

Re: cereals with formula?

  • LO hates plain oatmeal. I mix it with a fruit I've already trialed. His favorite is cereal mixed with homemade applesauce.

  • He loved it with the breast milk. But with the formula it was nasty... I'm not even sure fruit could cover up that taste.
  • You can mix it with water , but I *think* they're supposed to wait until 6 months for water.

  • You can skip cereal completely.
  • Try formula again tomorrow. Maybe the shock of a thicker fluid weird out your little one.
We will be trying out cereal for the first time tomorrow as well. Just like you we both use formula and milk. I'll let you know how it goes.
  • I'm doing cereal just to get some more bm in her (she refuses all bottles). I put her vit d in it and it favors it a bit. It's mostly bm but she loves it. We will be trying food shortly. I think the rice cereal is making her gassy.
  • I used bm the first time and she did ok. I tried again using water and a fruit/veggie purée mixed in and she loved it! I'm going to continue doing it that way until we switch to baby food completely.

    Checking back.
The formul and cereal were successful! Then again she will eat anything.

Edit: I just made myself a small portion and tried it (I was hesitant in the beginning cuz op said it tasted like chemicals.) It really was not bad. We use honest company formula because it's not so sweet and they don't add DHA and we got earths best oatmeal. Both are organic products.
