When are you stopping breastfeeding?

I am not made to breastfeed. My body just stopped making more milk as she grew, so I'm already supplementing with formula at least half her meal. I feel so much guilt, and trying to make it to 6 months when she's getting more solids. Any one thinking about weaning yet?

Re: When are you stopping breastfeeding?

  • Me *raises hand* I've actually been weaning off since Tuesday but my boobs aren't cooperating. They're drying up but not as fast as I hoped. I only give my LO 5 oz of breast milk a day that I add to his formula. I've saved enough in the freezer to give him that much until about he's about 7.5 months. I'm so over pumping and can't wait for my body to be all my own again.

  • I am kinda the opposite.  Before I had my LO I swore I would stop as soon as there were teeth, then my plan was 6 months.  After I had him and established our BF relationship I said my goal was 9 months and more recently I feel like we won't stop for at least a year...
However, I get a full year paid mat leave.  If I had to pump everyday at work I would probably feel differently.  I am not a big fan of pumping!

  • My answer is unclear, because i want to keep it going for as long as I can.
  • My original plan was to BF a year (I don't work), but after reading an article about all the benefits even after that point,'I'm considering going longer! I don't want to be one of those moms that whips out her tata's on the playground though haha
  • I'm hoping to go for 2 years, but we'd like to start trying for our second at the end of the summer so it would mean nursing two at the same time. Not a huge deal but we'll see how that works. Also not sure how nursing and pregnancy work together. I'll have to talk with my midwives about that too.
  • I was wondering the same thing!
  • At least a year! I'm sorry breastfeeding has been a struggle for you.  I just got back to work and while pumping is a pain, it makes be feel close to him while I'm there.  I look forward to nursing him when I get home. Once he's older I'm sure it will only be bedtime nursing :)
  • Please don't beat yourself up if breastfeeding isn't working. The important thing is that your baby is healthy and full and it doesn't matter how you get your baby to that point. I'm weaning off and my LO will almost be 4 months. I stress so much about pumping at home and at work and it's effecting my happiness as a mom. I am excited to be done so I can spend more time enjoying my baby and not stressing about my low supply and pumping.

This.  While I do think pumping (and even more so, bottle washing) is a pain, I love that I am providing for him even when I can't be with him.  I said I would BF as long as he wanted with DS1 and he weaned around 13 months.  We will see with this one how it plays out.

  • Somewhere between 18mos-2yo. I nursed my second until 19mos when I got pregnant agIn and she was pretty much just playing around. I did quit pumping at work around 11 mos and went to bedtime/morning nursing.

  • I want to last at least 6 months and hope to get a year. But this week I had oral surgery and it was a big one. I'm in a lot of pain and I can't motivate myself to pump and clean the parts. I'm scared this will reduce my supply. Today I pumped once and it was very little. I nursed her twice, which is something. I am afraid that the pain in the neck that is pumping is starting to get to me. I am naturally a lazy person and I am really making an effort with the whole thing for almost a month and I doubt I'll keep it up much longer. I did finally start to enjoy breastfeeding but it's hard to tell if it's enough milk.

  • I'm hoping to quit pumping at work around 6 mo, once he's eating a fair amount of solids, but continuing to breastfeed when I'm home for at least the first year
  • I had to stop at 12 weeks, I wanted to till at least 6 months but my baby had thrush in his mouth then gave it to me on my nipples and they would bleed after every feeding and I was in so much pain, it's been nearly 3 weeks and they are only just starting to get better
  • I want to BF for the first year. Since that takes us to October, I will definitely nurse through the flu season, so LO has the antibodies. If baby is ready, then we'll start weaning about 18 months. I do it very slowly so it takes a few months.

This is my plan as well. I'm on week 3 back at work and already finding pumping to be difficult so will see if I make it :(

@SweetnSassy23 that's actually a really good point! I had planned on a year but I may nurse through flu season too
  • I Exclusively Pump so I'm hoping my supply will stay for at least a year but hopefully until she's about 18 months.
  • For as long as I can and my boy wants to.  I nursed my girls each until 20 and then 21 months. I'm able to work from home so that helps out as well however I pump 1-2×day for a freezer stash and donations.

I've been EBF for 4 months now except last night I gave my son a bottle of formula because he has been up every hour on the hour for a month.  Last night was the first time he slept for a 5 hour stretch from midnight to 5 a.m.  then after he ate (breast) at 5 am he slept till 8.  It was heaven.  I think though I will start weaning him from the breast at 6 months.  Honestly, I'm exhausted and I'm not a fan of pumping, my body does not respond to the pump.
