Houston Babies

New to Houston area and needing recommendations

Hello everyone!

My husband is in the military, and we're currently in Germany. I am planning on going to Texas to have my baby (parents are in the Porter area and my ILs are in the Dallas area). This is my second child, and I'm hoping for a VBAC. My parents are new to the Porter area, so we don't know any of the doctors/hospitals. I did some looking around online and the Women's Plaza at Texas Children's really jumped out at me.

Any reviews of Texas Children's? Does anyone have any recommendations for VBAC friendly doctors and facilities a little closer to Porter?

Thanks!

Re: New to Houston area and needing recommendations

  • I live in Porter. I see Dr. Carrie Ball. She comes to Kingwood once a week and she delivers at Women's Hospital downtown. I had a great experience there. I thought the nurses were amazing. I know quite a few people who have had their babies at Kingwood Hospital. I've heard pretty mixed reviews about
  • Thanks, @missilini! I'll give her a call.

So far, I've been turned down by five (I stopped counting at five) practices because apparently it's completely unheard of that not every single woman starts their pregnancy out with the doctor that ends up delivering with them. And apparently to deliver at TXCH with their physicians, you have to be in some kind of special club and know people. Which I do not. This whole doctor search is stressing me out.

  • I really hope you can get in to see her. She makes you feel like your her only patient. When I was delivering she stayed with me for over an hour and half which is rare I've heard from friends. I know she also does VBACs. I've heard great things about TX Children's, but it seems not to be worth the hassle. Good luck.
  • Try Baylor Ob/Gyn at Texas Children's. That's where my dr is and I really like it! It's a huge practice, so you'll see different people, and they will have students with them quite often. If that idea bothers you I would search elsewhere. They give you the opportunity to participate in cautious research studies, which I really like. If that doesn't pan out then try Kingwood Ob/Gyn Associates. I have a friend going there and she likes it too. The hospital is nice, it's no Texas Children's, but that's hard to touch.

  • Thanks, @almostpriceless

I actually tried to get in with every single doctor that delivers at Texas Children's. And ever. single. one. told me that I had to have been referred by a patient there. Not only that, when I tried to explain my situations to them, every office but one took my info and told me that they'd call me back with the doctor's decision - and not one single office called me back. Not one. For that reason, I won't deliver at TX Children's. I think the receptionists just really didn't want to deal with an out of the norm situation, and did everything in their powers not to.

Fortunately, I was able to find a practice that will take me. Her Healthcare in Kingwood. If I don't like them, I'll check out the other Kingwood practice that you recommended.

  • Just FYI, I moved to Houston when I was pregnant with no doctor and I also had quite a few upsetting experiences trying to get in at the Pavilion for Women. I swear those receptionists enjoy making you cry. Have you tried Dr. Espana (Women's Specialists of Houston)? He was absolutely wonderful and his staff was pretty nice as well.
