Bottles?

Good Morning Bumpies!!!  :)

I'm working on registry stuff and trying to figure out which bottles would be best to register for to try out. I plan to breast feed and pump. So any stm or anyone else have any bottles that they just love for their LO that go great with breastfeeding? Hopefully not anything that is crazy expensive. If there is already a board about this if you could please post below too that'd be great.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Bottles?

  • FTM here, but I had the same question. My STM sister recommended I get Dr. Brown's.
    Me: 38; DH: 41
    DS: Born 5-17-16

  • I'm a FTM as well, and I've heard that it's different for every baby. I found this set on Amazon that has 5 different kinds. I haven't looked but hopefully you can find them at other stores as they're are really expensive on Amazon right now.

This is pretty awesome... but yea I'll definitely need to shop around and see if I can find this pack better priced somewhere. Thank you.
  • I'm a FTM too but I registered for a two different bottles that were highly recommended to me by friends - Tommy Tippee and Comotomo. I didn't register for high quantities of either in case the LO doesn't like them.
  • Bottles overwhelm me.  A few friends suggest that I register for just a few of a few different brands, so that's what I did.  I think I have a small set of Dr. Browns and a small set of Avant.  Plus I have a few others that I've gotten as samples.  I figure once the baby is here and I know what works for him I can buy more.

  • Yeah, agree with @AnastasiaBeaverhausen09 - I am completely overwhelmed by bottles. More so than anything else I have looked at! I have a Medela PIS breast pump, and from what I am reading, it is adaptable with the Phillips Avent bottles which seem to have good reviews.

From what I am getting from all the reading I have done, it seems to be a crap shoot.

Thats an AWESOME idea. But just to call out- check to ensure your daycare (if you are doing daycare) allows glass bottles. The one we are going with won't allow them, and from talking to other moms, that seems to be a general consensus!

  • FTM here, and SUPER overwhelmed by bottles. I have read so much info on the major brands and still do not know what to do! As of right now I am just registered for Dr Browns....

PS I had a dream last night I was breastfeeding!
  • I loved Tommee Tippee for my kids, and plan to buy them again for this baby.  IMO, Dr. Browns are only worth it if you're baby is colic, has reflux, etc. because there are a lot of parts to clean.  Avent bottles leaked, but that was 8 years ago, so they may have changed.

  • Bottles are really going to be a guessing game. I BF my kids for ~6 months.  DD#1 took to our bottle of choice without any issues (playtex with disposable liners). DD#2 was extremely picky and we went through a lot of brands before she settled on MAM (I think she liked this one since we used that brand for pacifiers).

I would just start out with only a few of the brands you are willing to try and buy more after the baby decides what they like. One word of advice, when you are looking at bottles, make sure they are easy to clean. Some bottles can have up to 5 different parts or small tubes that makes it harder than it needs to be.
  • Same info as those posted. I only BF for about 3ish months with my first, then went to the Dr. Brown bottles, and they worked for us for a while, then we switched to the Avents, and I absolutely love them. It's really whatever works for LO and what they will take, so I wouldn't splurge and get too many of one type to begin with. Have a few kinds handy and don't be afraid to try them all!
  • So far I feel the same as all you other FTM... this whole bottle thing has got me a little overwhelmed. Thanks all you STM for your input. I think I will just have to try a few out and see what works I guess.
  • I registered for some Lansinoh bottles based on a recommendation from a friend who's switching between breast and bottle. But I only registered for a few - don't want to have a ton of them if they don't work out!
  • I used Playtex with the drop ins with my first and am hoping this LO will like them as well because they're SUPER easy! But you really just have to wait and see what the baby will take.

So here's the important thing about picking bottles to use in addition to breastfeeding. Whatever bottle type your little one likes, use the slowest flow possible, preemie nipples preferable, and use the paced bottle feeding method. So many babies wean prematurely from the breast because they develop a bottle preference because it takes zero effort to pull milk from a bottle, but babies have to do some work to get milk from mom. For this same reason babies start to take enormous amounts of breastmilk at one time, which eventually mom struggles to keep up with. I'm extremely active in my la Leche league, pursuing leadership, and see this chain of events all the time and see the stress it creates for mom trying and struggling to keep up with her baby who is being overfed because of lack of knowledge about bottle feeding a breastfed baby. Slow flow nipples and paced bottle feeding are way more important than the type of bottle!

A lot of breastfeeding moms swear by the tommee tippee bottles because it requires a wider latch that mimics a nursing latch, and the nipple stretches like a real nipple. But it's all trial and error really, I'd personally get the variety pack that includes different brands if I was a FTM.
Thank you soooo much for this... I was just looking at nipples trying to figure out which would be best! I had registered for medium flow... but what you said makes so much sense now that I think about it... back to the registry to adjust.
  • I'm at playgroup right now, I'll post how to do paced bottle feeds later today.
  • DD used Avent at first and they were ok. We eventually moved to Dr. Browns because of reflux issues and it made feeding so much easier for the both of us. As @araecasey stated, the slow flow nipple is going to be best if you intend on breastfeeding.
  • This is the sheet I printed out for my Mom when she watched my son while I was at work so that I could continue to bf while at home and pump while at work. https://kellymom.com/bf/pumpingmoms/feeding-tools/bottle-feeding/
There are other useful links at the bottom of he page too.

Like others have said, choose a small variety (it's easiest if they are compatible or adaptable with your pump). It's trial and error which your baby will do well with. DS happened to be just fine with the standard Medela bottles, slowest flow; I just trained him to use a wide latch on the bottle nipple early on by adjusting his lips as he ate until he just did it naturally. Also, be sure to be realistic about how complex a bottle is to clean and whether or not you're up for that.
  • We're going with the Avent glass bottles. Originally we were going to go with Klean Kanteen because it goes from bottle to sippy to regular water bottle but it had some bad reviews related to gas bubbles.
  • If you pump and have a medela pump, you pump  directly into the bottle so you can try those first. They sell extra bottle rings and nipples. I loved tommee tippee when I had my son. He was EBF for 3 months, then I when I went back to work he took to the tommee tippee bottles really well.
  • we used the lansinoh bottles.  We also tried dr.browns and the medela bottles.  My registry advice would be pick a type of bottle (we picked glass dr. browns), and open just a few of them.  When the twins didn't take to those bottles, I exchanged the rest for another type of bottle.

  • It is different for every baby. I pumped, and the first bottle I used and Avent I got for free, however my son spit up like a maniac so I had to switch to Dr. Browns which were a PITA to clean.

I wouldn't register for any, just buy two or three different kinds and then see what works best.

I hope this baby is less spitty so I don't have to use Dr. Brown's!

  • My LO loved dr browns. We tried avent as well but didn't like so much. And if you have a medela pump you can pump directly into dr browns. We have both glass and plastic - I prefer the glass - my husband the plastic (glass seems easier to overheat in a bottle warmer). We did not get a great latch so went to bottle feeding for the most part pretty early. Pumpings a pain but being able to sleep while husband does the 3 a.m. Feeding is nice.
  • We used the Avent (both regular and the "naturals") kind with my DD. We got Tommee Tippee too last time, but I didn't really care for them and neither did she. I still have some of the Avent from DD, but may get a pack of Dr. Browns too and see which he will prefer. My only issue with Dr. Browns is the number of pieces to clean!

    *coughs* Dr. Brown's *cough*
Both of my kids preferred the wide bottles, maybe because they were more like a breast? Who knows, DS would only use Avent and DD liked Avent and the wide Playtex Ventaire
  • We have both Avent and Dr Browns so we will see what they like (or if it's something else entirely!)

call me crazy, but I never considered Dr Browns that hard to clean or having "omg so many pieces". Maybe I'm just used to them? I don't know, but I wouldn't let it intimidate you into not getting them since it seems a lot of babies do quite well on them!

STM here. I registered for glass bottles the first time around and someone let me borrow some other bottles.
But here is what actually happened since I stayed at home with the baby.

Pumping, washing all the bottle parts, getting all the pumping supplies, finding time to sit down and pump when I would rather be sleeping or taking a shower, and all the other extra steps that came with nursing plus pumping; it became so much easier to just nurse.
Therefore all the bottles just went to waste and I just nursed the baby, never used formula or pumped milk. It was the lazier and much easier way for us at least since I was there anyway.
  • I'm a FTM also but I'm planning on getting the munchkin latch bottles. I've heard great things, and from my research they seem to be easy for baby to adapt to while also breastfeeding.
  • I had a Medela pump so I opted for the Medela bottles. They worked out just fine and my daughter used them for the whole first year of her life.
