2nd Trimester

Can you take muscle relaxers when pregnant

I'm just starting my second trimester and am dealing with back pain from an unrelated injury which I suspect may get worse as I get farther along. I use to take a pill that is acetaminophen and muscle relaxer and I'm wondering if that is okay to take or if anyone else dealing with back pain has any other suggestions.

  • Talk to your doctor to be sure. Over the counter Tylenol is ok at a regular dosage but not sure about the other. I have previously back issues that are flaring up since the end of second tri and wasn't given anything. I personally don't like meds so I try heat, cold, massage and acupuncture. Turns out my pain was coming from contractions and weight of baby (I'm pretty small framed). Bedrest is my only reliefs along with some meds that help my muscles from contracting.

Hope you get some relief soon!!! But talk to your doctor.
  • Yep what pp said talk to your dr

  • Talking to your doctor is the way to go.  You shouldn't need an appointment, just give them a call and they'll usually write down the question and have a doctor call you back when they have a minute to talk to you
  • My Dr doesn't OK muscle relaxers during pregnancy and recommends not using them while nursing either. For my back injury I use heat or ice, stretching, and massage. Weight lifting and yoga helps the most to prevent flares. Once the muscle spasms start, there's not a lot to stop them and I just have to ride it out.

Maybe a chiropractor could help?  I haven't tried that as it's not covered by my insurance.

  • I have lower lumbar fractures (congenital). My OB recommends only Tylenol & warm showers (monitor your core body temp) to treat my back issues during pregnancy.

I would check with your OB before continuing the specific muscle relaxer.

  • Sorry gonna high jack this post really quick. Have any of you with back issues (not due to pregnancy) been recommended to do a c section vs vaginal? I have some minor herniated disk and previous treatment in my SI joint. I'm talking to my docs but just wondering if any of you had that recommended. Thanks!

I have a herniated disc in my lumbar and a crooked pelvis that causes me SI joint issues. My doctor has never mentioned me not being able to deliver vaginally. They think my issues are actually from the birth of DD, so I'm hoping that doesn't happen again or get worse!

Hmm I've had my issues for a few years and this is my first. I don't know yet if I should take the risk of possibly making things worse. Still waiting on my doctors recommendation. Thanks for replying back!
  • I wish!  I have them for tension headaches but my OB said they are off limits!

I have extensive injuries from sports (mostly in my back/spine). My doctor never suggested a c section but I had one due to other reasons. I will say I had a spinal block and where the injection was will sometimes set off my bulging discs and cause tingling and numbness.

  • I would think muscle relaxers would be something to avoid during pregnancy as your uterus is a muscle and it doesn't sound like something you would want super relaxed. But honestly I have no idea. Ask your doctor to find out for sure seems how they know your medical history and how to best help you.

I started having BH contractions since 17 wks my OB gave me a low dose blood pressure med to help "relax" my uterus and prevent so many contractions. I took it as need at first and now all the time since I get tons of them and she's monitoring me. But that's a whole different story.

OP definitely talk to your doctor first.

My OB and Midwife (working together) never recommended section over vaginal birth. Then again, my practice has a low section rate anyway and we are pretty crunchy. There should be no issues (for the average mother) while pushing for a vaginal birth. Its the weight gain and baby pulling you forward that might cause more issues. Major surgery is not usually a thing with relation to this issue.

  • Def talk to your doctor. If the pain is that bad he may be able to prescribe something that is safe to take. Mine gave me tylenol with codeine for the migraines i get and it def helps to take them on an as needed basis.
