Half way there! And placenta praevia

20 weeks today, we had our AS and baby looks great, also found out its girl #3 for us! They did discover I have minor placenta praevia so I go back in 4 weeks for another US to see if it's moved. Has anyone here delt with that? Did it resolve on its own? I'm trying for a vbac and she said I still have a fair chance so I'm not too worried but wanted more info just to educate myself.

  • I had it with DS2, it resolved on its own.  It's got plenty of time to move out of the way.  Fingers crossed!

  • I had a low-lying placenta flagged at my a/s with my first. They sent me for a followup u/s at 30 weeks and it had resolved itself. Did they mention if your placenta was anterior? I think that raises the chance of a low-lying placenta at 20 weeks but also make it more likely that it will move up with the way your uterus grows.

She didn't mention it being anterior and I've been able to feel baby moving around for quite some time so I don't think it is, but it's nice to hear about them resolving on their own.

Thanks!  I know it's still early, so I'm not super worried and the Dr wasn't either.

  • @mamabird24 I had an ultrasound today too and had the exact same news. I want a natural birth, so I'm a bit concerned as well, but I look at like if that's the only thing wrong with the pregnancy/baby, I'm happy. There's still 10 weeks left for it to resolve, the doctor seems optimistic, so I'm going to be as well!  ::hugs::

Exactly my thoughts, @MistKeeper, other than that the Dr said the baby looked great and was growing right where she should be. I'm super thankful it's such an minor issue.  I'm sure we'll both be good to go in a few weeks!

  • Yep, I'm on the same boat. I had my 20 week scan today and my placenta measured 2.1cm away from the cervix and doc said they like it to be at just 2.5cm. But both the MFM and my ob agreed not to worry as it will probably resolve itself as baby and my uterus grow. My OB did say to take it easy with any heavy lifting or strenuous workouts and they often say no sex or at least no rough sex. None of that's happening anyways right now, so I had a good laugh at that.
  • I had the same at my 20 week scan. My doctor put me on lots of restrictions and they bought me back this week, no resolution. My next ultrasound is Feb.15. They say they want to monitor it a bit more frequently. I really hope it resolves on its own. I am so afraid of the csection idea. I'm glad my little girl is healthy though. I'm praying all of ours resolve.
  • I was diagnosed with placenta previa at my 20 week scan too, mine is fully covering my cervix and I am on pelvic rest with no lifting and I won't get another scan until around 30 weeks to see if it moved. I haven't had any other complications and the doc hopes it will move, but we were planning a c-section anyway so no change in plans there. :) good luck and I hope yours resolves on its own!
  • I'm in the same boat - my midwife called yesterday to let me know that I have a low-lying placenta. She didn't mention anything about limiting exercise, heavy lifting, sex, etc. She's going to schedule another ultrasound at 32 weeks to re-assess. She said it's very common - at this point in pregnancy, about 1 in 10 women have placenta previa, but by the third trimester (around 32 weeks) only about 1 in 200 women have it. So odds are that it will move on its own, and be a non-issue by the time you're ready to deliver!

  • I had it with my last pregnancy and was put on pelvic rest.  Had my 20 weeks u/s last week and tech said I have a low lying placenta as well as partial previa again. I have my midwife appt tomorrow and I'm assuming I will be put in pelvic rest again.  However last time it wasn't covering by the next u/s and I went on to have a natural home birth.
  • The Dr didn't mention limiting any activities, but man, my poor DH would go crazy if they said no sex haha its already been a couple weeks because one or both of us had been sick so he's chomping at the bit lol
Did anyone have a prior c-section when they found out about the placenta praevia? Apparently there's risk of the placenta implanting in the scar tissue and causing issues. It doesn't sound like that's a problem for me at the moment and I'm assuming if my placenta moves up, it will be moving away from my scar so it shouldn't be a problem later either, but wondering if anyone delt with that.

That's good to know! I hadn't read any statistics yet and no one told me that

  • With my daughter I had the same thing, and it moved by 28 weeks. Most of them do if they are partial.

  • I also had a low-lying placenta at 20 weeks with my first, and it resolved on its own. Mine is low this time as well, and I'm not worried about it given my experience last time. They did warn me sex could cause bleeding, but they didn't see any need for pelvic rest.

  • I had low-lying with DS. Was mentally prepared for a CS, but it finally moved at 34 weeks. I believe they resolve themselves 95% of the time, so the odds are in your favor.
