Mobile or no mobile

Advice please! Moms who already have kids, did you get a mobile for the crib? If so did you really use it? I'm on the fence about buying one because they're  $50+ and I can think of other things I can spend the money on lol mom on a budget, just trying to figure out what I'm really gonna use. Thanks in advance!

Re: Mobile or no mobile

  • I have never bought a mobile and I'm pregnant with my fourth. They're cute but I really did not feel the need or want to purchase it. (F16 board).

  • You can easily make one with some paper, string and a $2 embroidery hoop. It won't have music, but it will essentially do the same thing.

That said, I don't think they are necessary.  The most effective 'mobile' I had was a plushie crab that we hung over the changing table to distract my son during diaper changes. Otherwise he didn't pay them much attention.

I made a ribbon one (with hoop and lots of ribbons hung from it) last time and it was cute but frankly nothing special. It was hanging over the changing table, not the crib. I think we currently have a dream catcher hanging from that hook and no plans to swap it out. I'm sure mobiles are great but I never once missed not having a "real" one.
  • I had one. I'll admit it was more for aesthetics, but we did use it!

  • We have one but only because it was a gift!
  • If you want to you can make your own, and I have seen on ebay you can order the mobile parts for cheap, then create your own. Or you can make one to suspend from the ceiling.

In general the point of the mobile is to generate visual stimulation for the baby, which is why they are usually brightly colored or have crazy patterns.  The music also enhances their audio stimulation.  It all enhances their cognitive/brain development.

  • We made a mobile for this LO. Just some yarn (half of which we had on hand) and 3 cheap embroidery hoops. I'll post a picture later, but it cost less than 15 bucks to make and only cost that much because of the yarn we did have to buy.

  • We had one for our first two boys.  The only time I really used it was for the two minutes I needed to make a bathroom run and my boys needed distraction.  We got rid of it way before this one and I'm not replacing.

Our family of 5 is complete!!  Love our boys!

  • Thanks for all the advice ladies I'm gonna look into making one! (:
  • We had one and used it but only because I found it on clearance and it was a great deal. I had to remove it once he could stand because he would pull on it and pull things off.
  • I had 1 with all 3 of mine and got one for this one to. I used mine almost everyday. The babies loved the music and watch the animals turn.
  • Making one was so fun, I did it with our first! I did the embroidery hoop and made clouds with cardstock paper (white fluffy one with one grey one with a lightening bolt - hubby studies lightening). We hung above the crib. It cost like $3 to make.

My son actually broke it and I'm replacing the embroidery hoop with 2 thin metal mobile rods (eBay). Also ours is above the change table too. I was afraid to have anything near his bed.
  • Never bought/used a mobile. Since babies are (supposed to be) asleep in their cribs, it doesn't really make sense to me and the last thing I want is an object collecting dust right above the baby. From what I've heard/seen, they usually end up getting destroyed when the baby gets older anyway. Kids reach an age where they like to take everything in/near their crib apart!
    It's a boy! Born 42 weeks, 2 days.

  • I bought one and we hung it (but never let it play music) until he was old enough to pull up, then we had to take it down. I'm having one made my a good friend of mine this time, BUT I'm hanging it over the changing table because that makes WAY more sense to me.

  • I made mine for the boys since I couldn't justify the cost of a mobile times 2. They came out alright and it was fun baby related project to keep me busy earlier in the pregnancy.

We have one and it is useful at times (not always).  It helped to distract her when she was cranky and refused to stay in bed, and it worked a few times to actually put her to sleep.  I would say it's definitely not a must have.  I don't remember mine being that expensive, I think I bought it when it was on sale or with coupon.

  • I made one with DH; we used cookie cutters and melted translucent plastic beads, then hung them at angles from a large plastic circle (made the same way). We made it outside on the gas grill one day. Cute, easy, and we made a few extras for sun catchers in the Windows.

We got a cheap one from Target.  We would play it and he really enjoyed it when his vision and focus started to improve.

That being said, I think they are most useful to have over a diaper changing area, and the items on them need to be facing down so the baby can see them.  I think the ones where the items face out are for aesthetics only.  It's nice to have homemade seasonal ones for over the diaper changing area with fun things like leaves or flowers or acorns, etc so they can watch them spin while you change the diaper.
