I can't sleep!

36w 1d...... serious insomnia. Either my mind is racing, I can't get comfortable, I've got to pee, I've got the burps, the baby has the hiccups or my heart feels like it's racing! Ahhhhh! I have to get up for work in 4.5 hours  :s
Any tricks out there that I should try?
Ps. I haven't been on my phone or any device until 5 min ago. I was really trying to sleep  :(

Re: I can't sleep!

  • I've been dealing with the same thing at night, the only thing that works for me (sometimes) is I start to envision waves crashing on a beach and just try to really relax and most of the time I will fall asleep after a little bit. I have trouble turning my brain off in the middle of the night and just need to focus on something calming. I dont know if it'll help you but it's worth a try.

  • I'm 37 weeks and while I lost a ton of sleep before now due to the constant peeing, heartburn, and trying to get comfy I never really had insomnia...until last night!! My mind would just not shut off. My coworker suggested a bath before bed to help wind you down and turn off your mind. I'm going to try that tonight and see if it helps!!
  • When I was little my mom taught me a trick where you lay down and close your eyes, then go through each part of your body starting with your toes and try to think really hard about relaxing each body part. I say things in my head like "I can feel my toes relaxing. They did a lot of walking today and it feels good to lay in bed. The balls of my feet are releasing all tension." and you just keep going up throughout the body and doing the same thing. It has always worked for me and I can never make it all the way up to my head. Oddly enough, I recently learned that this was a tactic she originally learned in order to relax during natural child birth. Who knew?!? So there you go - you can use it to fall asleep and feel like you're training for birth at the same time ;)
  • Take a bath or shower before bed. Try a lavender spray. Get your SO to give you a massage and maybe try some chamomile tea. Otherwise if your heart is racing drink some water and maybe try reading a book too. That's all my suggestions! One or all together haha!

  • I found a warm bath before bed has helped me. Though I wish I did that last night because I definitely did not sleep enough and was up constantly and now I'm paying for it. It's 2PM and I'm ready for bed. Also, I found if I eat too close to bedtime that never works out well for me, so make sure to avoid that if you can.
  • My Dr. gave me the go ahead to take Tylenol PM to help me sleep when I hit 36 weeks.... It has made all the difference!

  • I've been so miserable at night... it's to the point where bedtime is an actual chore. Showering is labor-intensive and can barely reach my calves to clean off. Once I get in the bed, I'm out of breath and know I'm on course for a disastrous night of tossing and turning... rolling over requires a lot of energy, once I get comfortable baby is kicking and I can't fall asleep. Once baby isn't kicking any longer, I have heartburn or need to turn over due to sciatic nerve pain. I've gone from the couch, to a recliner, to an air mattress, to my bed. Nothing is comfortable. Hang in there!

  • I typically walk around and go into the living room. For some reason the sofa hits the spot a little better then my bed!

This. We have a couch in our office/DH's man cave that I have dubbed "the magic couch." When DH is snoring or my hips are hurting, I walk around for a minute then settle down on the couch for some much needed rest.

  • Dog got up to go out to pee at 3am so I went too thinking I'll let her out then in. Yep NO!!! She went crazy and started barking and going crazy then I heard a loud squeal!! She caught something needless to say I'm wide awake now and hungry. Crappy thing is I have a sinus infection and now I'm hubgry and in pain with chunks of crap being blown out my nose. I hope her kill was worth it.
  • This is going to sound nuts, but someone got me a Tranquil Frog (same brand as the Sleep Sheep) at the baby shower...you know for the baby  ;). Long story short, that thing really puts me out.
