Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Miscarriage... Apparently both emotionally AND financially devastating...

So I just needed somewhere to vent...

I was on vacation in Florida when my doctor called and told me I needed to get an ultrasound to make sure my pregnancy wasn't ectopic (my quants were doing wonky dropping then rising things...).  So I went to the ER, and they did an ultrasound, some blood work, and a pelvic exam.  I was there for a total of about 5 hours (most of which was spent watching Big Hero 6 and waiting for a doctor).

Well, I got the bill from the hospital in the mail, and they want $1300!  Are you kidding me?  I have insurance!  What exactly costs that much?  So now I get to be depressed about my lost baby and also poor.  Awesome.

Sorry for the rant, ladies, but I'm really angry.

  • @BooksForMe23 I had a similar experience after my first loss, which also happened out of state and in an ER. Except I have a high deductible plan so my bill was more like $1800. Rubs salt in the wound!

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. The medical bills really suck. Between two miscarriages and two D&Cs in one year, I think it cost me close to $2,000. I would suggest maybe giving them a call. They may have a prompt pay discount or can setup a payment plan, if you need it. Definitely rubs salt in the wounds, though, as the previous poster said. hugs.
  • Ugh!  Sorry for you guys too @silentP and @AL_TwinCities

It seriously never occurred to me I was going to pay this much.  I mean seriously, they didn't actually DO anything.  I guess because I was in an ER out of state and not my doctor's office, that costs more.  I looked at my husband yesterday and said, "I was pregnant...and all I got out of it was a $1300 medical bill..."

  • I'm so sorry @BooksForMe23. That's just an extra special kick in the teeth...
  • So sorry to hear that!
  • Im so sorry! Ive had two MMC that required d&c. Our bills were def over $2000. The real kicker, my bil told us their 3 live births didnt cost that much

  • @nellybellycat

OMG...what is that gif?  Seriously, though, my doctor went over insurance stuff with me, and the delivery I was supposed to have was going to be like $400 total, including all testing, ultrasounds, and appointments.  That is so messed up that D&C costs more.  Somebody write Obama...

  • Yea, we had testing done on the tissue so im not sure if thats part of it. A live, single, birth is around $1500 under our plan

  • I'd definitely try to fight it. Get out the big guns on your insurance company.

If worse comes to worse, I don't know if it's the case in all states but I know here in MN, as long as you are paying SOMETHING on your medical bills, it can't go to collections or hurt your credit. You can literally pay a dollar per month and they can't really do anything about it. I have no idea how that would work in your situation though. I'm sorry :( As if a mc isn't bad enough.

  • @BooksForMe23 this completely sucks. Mine is still ongoing, but I have already racked up a $793 bill. The OB was so kind to inform me yesterday that my insurance paid $95. Thanks a heap, insurance.

Also @FiancB that's the same in Fl - as long as you are paying something they won't send you to collections.
Rainbow baby Dean is due 2/17/17!
  • @FiancB @WinchesterGirl

Thanks for the info, ladies.  Since I was in Florida when it happened, hopefully that is the case.  If so, they're getting the bare minimum from me.  I've been researching online, and apparently the Florida governor has set up a commission on hospital price gouging because Florida hospitals do it so often.

It's not something they'll advertise for sure, so your bill will say to call to set up a payment plan and they'll definitely try to get a set amount out of you that is as large as possible and mention collections etc if you don't pay, but they're just trying to sound scary and get their money. It absolutely can if you're not paying- learned that the hard way (fun fact- did you know insurance usually does not cover ambulance rides?). But you shouldn't really need to set up a payment plan like they make it sound, just send something each month.

I don't know if it still applies when you're from another state, but I would think it would. Obviously, I'm a stranger on the internet that may not know what she's talking about so tread carefully. Just don't let them intimidate you and do your own research on your options.

    Big hugs.

  • I got a call from the hospital today and since none of us have been to the doctor this year for anything we will owe our entire deductible $3500 when we show up for the D&C Thursday. Oh okay let me just go pull that out of the piggy bank or write you a check. It's such crap. They can't bill me? Should a D&C even cost that much?

  • We were just in the emergency room for an ectopic pregnancy and emergency surgery. Waiting for that bill. Just got an 85 dollar bill for 1 trip to the lab to check hcg level and was there 4 times, plus 3 ultrasounds and 3 office visits with 30 co pays. Waiting for the bills. It makes me sick
  • Yes. This is crap. I have no idea how much this is going to cost us. A freaking fortune and we don't even have a baby at the end.
  • I had a high deductible plan that i had already met and it still cost $700 for my D&C because my dr doesnt do them in the hospital OR bc he can never get a suit so he does them across the street in the out patient surgical center

  • OMG @kayham12   That is nuts!  Did you end up having to pay that much, or did they bill you?

  • I know how you feel. I just got a bill the other day for 1100 dollars. Like I don't already hurt enough! Ugh. Good luck!
  • I ended up miscarrying naturally so I didn't need it. I still had some tissue and took a round of Cytotec to get it out. I guess there is still a chance I could need it. I go back next Friday for my final MC check up. I didn't go to the ER even though I wanted to and I didn't have the D&C so I guess I saved myself a ton of money. I know im going to have to pay for the two extra ultrasounds, but I haven't seen the bill for that yet.

  • I came home yesterday to a $1060.40 bill for the D&C on top of the bills for the ultrasounds- all with insurance.  I just checked the insurance website and I have paid over $4K since July- almost all of it was pregnancy/ miscarriage related.  I'm already on the fence about trying again- and now with all the bills I am even more unsure if it's worth trying or if trying to have a family or if it will only bankrupt us.  I'll tell you this- if I miscarry again I'll do it naturally.  Good luck with all of the bills.

  • Ugh. Just found out today that all the bills I have count towards last year's deductible even though they were billed out this year because date of service was December. My tiny glimmer of hope in this whole matter was that maybe we would have to pay less for DH's oral surgery this week but alas, we are starting from scratch, and our deductible went up this year as well. The sad thing is that the majority of my bills aren't the D&C itself but all of the ultrasounds (including the one that lasted thirty seconds just to tell me my baby no longer had a heartbeat). Wishing everyone the financial means to make it through this horrible part of their losses....
