Rh-?

Hi ladies, my name is Rebecca. I'm due Aug 15th With my first baby. Congratulations to all of you! I was wondering if any of you are rh negative like I am. Would love to talk to someone with some experience dealing with negative blood type and pregnancy, or even just someone going through it for the first time like me.

I had a shot already.  They last for 12 weeks, so even if you are still spotting, you are covered!!

Re: Rh-?

  • I'm RH- and its really nothing. I got a shot of rhogram I wanna say around 36 or 38 weeks and then I got another one right after DD was born. It's basically in case your baby has a certain blood type opposite of yours.
  • Same here. I think like 20-25% of women are rh-. My OB said its no big deal, just a few shots like lynnlove28 said.

Also, it doesn't affect this pregnancy at all. It reduces the risk that your body rejects the next pregnancy in case this baby's blood is positive and your body tries to build up immunity.
  • Thanx. I pretty much understand everything involved. But I did have a bleeding episode somewhere in between 10 and 11weeks so I was sent to the ER to have a shot of RhoGAM.  It just seemed like no one had a clue how to go about getting  me the shot Including my perinatologist my ob and the attending er doc. I just feel like iy should have gone much more smoothly.apparently there's no protocol. My perinatologist saw me at her office which is in the hospital at 10:30 am she then sent me to my ob across town who then sent me back to the hospital er, got my blood tested immediately but then had to wait 5 hours for the shot and I was only 1 of 2 ppl in the er so it wasn't because they were busy. Maybe I'm just still cranky, lol. It was just such a frustrating day. Did either of you ever spot or bleed during pregnancy? Earlier than when you were due for your normal 28 week dose of RhoGAM?
  • Forgot to mention been spotting now pretty regularly for about 2 weeks.
  • I am. I had a shot at 28 weeks and then DS is Rh+ so I had another one a couple days after he was born. The Dr did tell me this time that bc I'm Rh- if I fall on the ice or get into a car accident, even if I feel fine, I need to call. She said they may need to give it earlier if I have even the slightest sign of trauma. Last time, the hospital I had lab work and the shots at required a blood sample to test my blood type every time the shot was requested. They would not even allow the nurses and staff to take one from the lab without confirming blood type right before.
  • I am rh- and have had two kids. I got lucky with my first she was rh- and i got to skip my second dose. My second was rh+ so I got both doses. I'm now pregnant with my third and have not had any complications. Hope this reassures.

Not that I'm glad you ladies have to go through all this cuz I'm already well aware it's a pain in the ass (litterally) I'm just glad I'm not the only one.
  • I'm rh- and my midwives said that unless there is any bleeding (none yet, anyways) that they will do the shot around 28 weeks-ish? But they are willing to test DH's blood to see if it is even necessary (apparently many doctors won't bother testing the DH in case the woman is not being truthful about the father).
  • I am also Rh- and like PPs said, it's really no big deal. With my first, I got a rhogham shot at 28 weeks and another right after the birth. Pretty painless. It doesn't concern me in the least. Not something to stress about.

My doc told me they give it to everyone rh- when I told her DH didn't know his blood type but they should have it on file (he goes to a doc in the same network). It didn't even occur to me this might be the reason!

I know, crazy right? DH asked his doctor to test his blood once we found out I was rh- (just when we started trying) but he straight up responded that they don't bother, just give all rh- women the shot in case the husband isn't actually the father. (Benefits of having the same family doctor since he was a baby I guess?) Our midwife said that as long as I know that DH is the father and feel safe, they would test him in case he's also rh-.
