Baby wont stop crying

My baby is 5 weeks old and it's been worse than ever today. She keeps constantly acting like she's hungry. I feed her up to 3 to 4 ounces every 3 to 4 hours. I burp her after every 1 ounce she drinks. And every time she spits up bad. And it's just been today it's this bad. Not even 30 minutes later she acts hungry again sucking on her hands and crying non-stop. I give her her pacifier. She sucks on her binkie for just a couple of minutes then she spits it out and starts screaming again. Anyone have any ideas what could be going on? Its been going on since 3 in the morning. And it's just been today and I'm exhausted.

Yes I'm actually going thru this right now. Someone else had another thread for Gerd and at the time my son didn't have it but now I'm thinking based on his symptoms he may. He's constantly throwing up after every feed regardless if he burps or not and always wants to eat even after I've fed him. He's ebf & barely naps.. It's been on and off for almost 2 weeks. I finally caved in and am taking him to the Drs tmrw. I thought it would pass but it hasn't and I'm going crazy!

Re: Baby wont stop crying

  • I suggest looking into the wonder weeks. 5 weeks is supposed to be a developmental leap that causes crying crankiness and clinginess. We went through something similar at 5 weeks that's only now stopped at almost 7 weeks. We also dealt with a lot of cluster feeding then.
I also discovered around that point that when DD is overtired she acts starving so I would over feed her causing her to spit up.
It's worth checking with your pediatrician though.
  • Sounds like it could be a mixture of reflux and cluster feeding. Babies go through a growth spurt between 4-6 weeks. DD is 5 weeks and just came off a horrible 3 days of barely sleeping and nursing every hour.
  • I have called the clinic at where we see her pediatrician but it closes at noon on Tuesdays. I know I'm not over feeding her because I've been feeding her the same amount within the same times for 2 weeks. And never have had this problem. I finally got her to sleep for an hour. By the time she woke up it was time for her to eat again. And it's happening all over again. When she's not eating I have been spending most of my day trying to keep her entertained because over feeding her is something I don't want to do.
  • DD will be 6 weeks from her due date on Thursday and has been acting the same way. She fusses if I'm not entertaining her and really loses it if I put her down. Naps today have been a struggle because she's either crying or looking all over the place. I'm hoping it passes soon. :)
  • @taysun yes! I second the overtired thing. My son does the same.
  • I find DD does this for a number of reasons. It could be cluster feeding with a growth spurt, overtired or overstimulated, or she'll do it with bad gas. Gas we can usually tell because her abdomen will feel hard and if he work with her to pass the gas she's fine. With growth spurt and cluster feeding she tends to calm down some once she's full. The over stimulated or over tired thing I end up taking her in my bedroom where it's quiet, hold her like I do to nurse her and do skin to skin but give her a pacifier. She's cranky and tired today from her two month vaccinations and I've had to do the last one a lot.
  • I kind of went through a similar spell.  My son was nonstop fussy and awake from 5pm all the way until 2 or 3am.  I was exclusively breastfeeding and he had literally been nursing on and off the entire time and had a two hour nursing spree, but I barely hand expressed anything by the time I had given up on the boob.  I was so frustrated I dug out a sample can of formula and fed him two ounces and he was out like a light...  I've been supplementing formula ever since.

but on the nights he just will not sleep for anything, I'll put him in my baby carrier that I strap to my chest, so I can run around the house, clean, do laundry, etc and he will just be content as can be as long as his head is against my chest.  By the time I'm done doing chores he is fast asleep.  Life saver.  I'm not sure if this will help in your situation, but it was just an idea to throw out there.  Good luck!
  • I'm in the middle of 8 hours of crying. She hasn't slept once

Same!! Except, I think he's done now.... This last week was awful. Many tears were shed by all. I read the article on the app and it all made sense! It's hard work changing that drastically!

Seriously. The Wonder Weeks app: best $1.99 ever spent. I posted about it the other day.
  • Try a warm bath 5o help relieve gas and soothe. Let me know how it goes

@laurabwalker don't they say if its more than 3 hours of non stop crying to seek medical help? I can't imagine. I hope everythings okay.

She has colic :( otherwise healthy, no issues in the daytime for the most part, reg wet diapers, gaining weight like a champ.
Doesnt spit up so not reflux? super gassy, fights sleep and gets so overtired no matter what we do to help her. Giving her probiotics and gripe water to help with gas, helps a tiny bit. Nothing soothes her once she starts the crying spell, I got her to stop for 10 minutes by taking a bath with her but afterwards screams bloody murder.
Edit: cut out dairy a week ago, takes a few weeks though

@laurabwalker oh my. I have to work on getting my lo to not cry ALL day long desperately however am successful 80% of the time. (Thank God for nap time and feeding the other 20%.) You have my whole hearted empathy. Do you have help?

I do have a great helpful husband, but he does have to work so I try to spare him during work days as much as possible. The whole cycle is a guilt frustration sad cycle. I am hoping it will ease at 8 weeks, she is just over 4 right now my poor baby.
  • We had the same issue earlier this week. We bought infant gas drops and they seemed to help with the evening hours when he cried nonstop. Also, my Moby wrap has been amazing. I put him in there against my chest and bounce around patting his bottom. He falls asleep within minutes, even when I can tell he's overstimulated. An overtired baby often acts like he or she is in pain.
