Vitamin D Suppliments for LO?

In my internet baby-browsing I came across the mayoclinics recommendation that babies have 400iu of vit D suppliment daily. I did more searching and it seems to be s pretty common recommendation. My pediatrician however never mentioned it. was this something I should have just known?

Re: Vitamin D Suppliments for LO?

  • Is your LO breastfed or formula fed? It only applies to breastfed babies since formula is already fortified with vitamin d.

  • My pediatrician recommended I give LO a vitamin D supplement since age is exclusively breastfed.
  • It wasn't recommended to me, I was just told to keep taking my prenatals.
  • I just had lo 1 month check up yesterday, and his pedi told us to start using the vit D supplement then.
  • It's recommend for formula fed babies as well until they are taking at least 1 liter of formula per day.
  • My pediatrician told me about it at one of our first appointments. They gave me a sample of baby Ddrops - you put a tiny drop on your nipple before feeding. It works really well for us and I've been giving it to her daily, usually at a nighttime feeding since that's oddly when I remember.

This for me too. My understanding was that a lot of moms were vitamin D deficit so they did not pass it on to LO. If mom gets all her needed vitamin D or it is given directly to LO should have the same result.

  • Our Ped recommended these drops. They are awesome bc it is literally one drop vs the other brands that are (I think) a half a tsp. You can put the drop on a paci or on your nipple when BF.

  • We got our vitamin supplement at the pharmacy, it's called polyvisol from enfamil. Our pediatrician told us to use that one, but check with yours before actually giving it to the baby, as I'm not a doctor!

  • The nurse in the hospital adviced us to get some vitimin D and then so did our family doctor . She gets one drop on her pacifier once daily (she's eping).

I never gave my formula fed boys vitimin D

  • I was given a supplement at his one month appointment. My baby is only breastfed.
  • I was given them at discharge from the hospital and told to start giving them at 2 weeks. Speak to your doctor about it. If they feel like you need them then they'll give them to you.
I pump 90% of the time and breastfeed the rest of the time as an fyi.
  • My pediatrician just told us to start this today at our 2 week appointment, although he said the exact timing wasn't super important.  He explained to us that the Vit D that's in breast milk naturally needs to be converted to a different form of Vit D through a good bit of full body sun exposure before being available for the baby to use and that our babies wouldn't (and shouldn't based on skin cancer risk) get enough sun exposure year round to convert enough of it. The supplement gives babies the form of Vit D that they need directly.
  • Has anyone else had issues with LO vomiting directly after Vitamin D has been given? He can't keep it down. I've tried two different brands that the pedi recommended. Any suggestions?

Have you tried the supplement that's a single drop?
  • I was told by our pedi around her 2 week appointment to do vitamin D drops for DD and that I too should be taking a vitamin D supplement

PSA: vit d supplements can be toxic to pets and the drops have an appealing flavor. Ask me how I know... Our dogs grabbed the bottle off the table, ate he bottle, the bottle top and consumed the drops. $1300 in emergency vet bills later... Don't make the mistake we made! Luckily the dogs are fine.
  • Our pediatrician told us to start giving vitamin D daily since he was 4 or 5 days old (he was exclusively bf). At his 2 month check up, we have added formula and continue to give him breast milk and the pediatrician said to continue to give it to him. Once we are only feeding him formula, we should give it to him every other day.
  • Our pedi told us about it at our 1 month visit. LO is EBF.
  • At 1month old too, the Carlson drops from walgreens, I take them too (3 instead of 1 for me) no taste at all, just a bit oily.
