epilepsy or other health problems in mommies to be.

Am I all alone or do I have some other mommies like me who could use a bit more support. I am 25years old. I was diagnosed epileptic at the age of 4. And diagnosed with a heart condition called S.V.T (supra ventricular tachycardia) at the age of 13. When I was pregnant with my 1st and second child I didn't have many symptoms of either medical condition. With my 3rd I had a ton of epileptic episodes and also severe chest pains quite often. Are there any other mommas in here that have health issues that may or may not cause more problems during pregnancy? If there are, what do you struggle with, and how do you cope or plan to get through it while waiting for your bundle of joy?

  • I struggle with trigeminal neuralgia. It's a nerve damage disorder, that causes excruciating attacks, caused by the nerve seizing . I usually take Topamax and Oxycarbenzapine (both anti siezurals) but have discontinued them, with my doctor's hesitant blessing. I also can't take the painkillers I usually do to interrupt the attacks.

I've been using cranio sacial massage to cope, and to get through it. I also talked with my doctor about it, and they will make sure there is an on call ENT surrounding my delivery date in case birth triggers an episode. They are going to look into what I can do for pain management of this condition DURING labor as well. (electric stim was suggested, to interrupt the nerve.)

The doctor was very unsure this summer if I would ever be able to handle a year without. As of last spring when we first started TTC I couldn't walk (it was interrupting my balance), could barely talk and was on massive steroids to try and bring it under control. We got the go-ahead in late August, UNLESS I had a relapse coming off the drugs. (So far just pain. I'm good with that!)

We also bought long term disability in case I can't work due to this / pregnancy complications.

Silver lining? This is one of the 5 conditions the mayo clinic classifies as more painful than labor.... so I feel like I've got this whole birth thing ;)

  • I have Lupus that involves organ damage and a clotting disorder.  So I am for sure high-risk when it comes to pregnancy.  Are you seeing a MFM specialist?
  • Allisun85: I have do many triggers with my epilepsy and pain is one of them, even if it's something I can handle my brain can't. Do during delivery with my youngest I had a seizure on the delivery table. I told my nurse I felt like I was going to have one and she brushed it off like nothing told me I couldn't possibly know that. But like I said above I've had epilepsy since I.was just a toddler. I KNOW. sure enough I slipped into one and when I came out of it I was surrounded by a ton of doctors.
To answer Bsckgb7 I am not seeing an MFM I just see all of my doctors who all work together during my pregnancy.
I also have a not so fun clotting disorder in the uterus that is only present at delivery. My uterus won't clot and I slip into DIC (commonly mistaken for DNC, completely different) and lose tons of blood.
  • I'm a lemon. Chronic pancreatitis (hereditary), wolff parkinson white syndrome that causes SVT, and asthma. My WPW is pretty well controlled but I have been warned that pg can cause an increase in symptoms. My CP flared early in my 1st tri. Lots of puking and pain but its calmed down. Im 13 weeks and already am having to take a lot of deep breathes due to pressure on my diaphragm from an inflamed panc and now a growing uterus. Ive been told that my 2nd and 3rd tris could be pretty uncomfortable.

  • I have MTHFR factor 5 leiden which are clotting disorders. I am on lovenox for this during pregnancy. Also have posted and incompetent cervix. I had my fourth cerclage placed on Tuesday. There is a high risk check in now that would be a good place for all of us to talk relate and vent.
  • I also have epilepsy among many things. I have a few heart conditions and a pacemaker and defibrillator and I've gone into cardiac arrest twice. I also have some breathing problems and I have a permanent tracheostomy. I struggled with passing out and some other health issues. I've had 9 surgeries in the past 10 years. I see a MFM doc as I'm very high risk, and I take Lovenox shots during the pregnancy because I have a history of a pulmonary embolis
  • @Calikye90 I'm convinced I am going to have an attack during labor! Stress is my big trigger, and when I get upset I start having issues. My doctor told me not to worry about it, pregnancy pushes endorphins through your system.

    Mhmmm. Yeah.

I promise I will be less stressed if we come up with a plan to deal with it IF it happens and if we don't need to ... great.

  • @calikye90 epilepsy hi 5! I also have epilepsy. I was diagnosed 4 years ago at 20, but had been having seizures for about 7 years without realizing. I have absent seizures, so I either didn't notice them, or thought I was just clumsy (I was having drop seizures for years and just thought I needed to lift my feet more).

I'm also worried about labour, with pain and tiredness triggering mine. Dh has already said if I look even slightly off he is making me have a c-section, because it's not worth the risk for bubs or me if I have one during labour. I completely agree, and both he and I are pretty good at picking up when I'm about to have one so hopefully we can cut them off.

Have you stayed on your meds? I was advised by my gp to come off them but my neuro said to stay on them. The meds I am on has an increased risk of cleft palates but figured seizures would be worse for bub then the risk of a cleft. I've already had to increase my dose of one of the meds because I was starting to feel iffy. My neuro said that would probably happen due to the increased blood volume.

Little boy due July 31st 2016
