VBAC for 2nd pregnancy

How many of you out there did this? And what was your experience? I waited 5 yrs for this pregnancy after my 1st csection, ob says I have a 50/50 change of delivering safely vaginally

I went into labor with my second 3 1/2 years after my first and was fully dialated and pushing when they let me know my son's heart rate was dipping as I pushed I decided to have them stop and wheel me into the OR so I could have a c-section. My doctor was confidant he would have been fine but my gut told me to go for another section. I'm glad I did he was 9lbs and 24 inches long but I think your chances are fine if you want to try my advice is just do what is comfortable to you if at any point you or your doctor feel a section would be best go with it. I have no issues with recovering from surgery so this baby will be my first I won't labor with since I'm having a scheduled section.

Re: VBAC for 2nd pregnancy

  • Thanks lightrox, we'll she requested my surgical records and they states there was fetal distress and failure to advance in labor so she said due to that I had a 30% chance of delivering vaginally, but it was up to me to decide, I went ahead and agreed to a scheduled csection on March 23rd
  • Jenniferamcooper, Thanks for your advice, going with a scheduled csection on March 23rd
  • @Abbyzmom weird my circumstances were the same as your (I will be 26 months since my c section when baby comes) and they gave me the same odds as any first time Mom. Every hospital is different.

Isn't it awesome to know a date and time of LOs arrival!! It seems like it'll be so much easier to plan. Best of luck : )
  • I am planning to VBAC as well. I was given the option to induce at 39 weeks or wait for spontaneous labor up to 40 weeks. Seeing as I am 2 hours away from the nearest VBAC friendly hospital. I went for the first option. They will attempt induction three ways before resorting to any pitocin. I was given a 58% chance of successfully vaginal delivery due to last c-section being caused by malposition and not failure to progress. Chance of uterine rupture at 0.5%. I will deliver at a university hospital. Hope that answers your question!

  • My doctor said that if I go into labor on my own and get to the hospital fully dilated, then they would let me try to push a little, otherwise they recommend just doing the CS.

Their practice recommends VBACs in situations where the prior CS was a result of something medical e.g. PreE, G diabetes, breeched baby, etc; a condition that existed with the prior but not current pregnancy.  In cases like mine where I actively pushed for 4 hours and baby never came, it's physiology (big head, small pelvis), and they recommend skipping the VBAC.
