Ketones present in urine sample..

Hi ladies,

For the past week I have been experiencing extreme nausea, I haven't managed to eat anything apart from the odd biscuit which comes back up anyway. Luckily I have been drinking a lot of water.

GP asked me for a water sample which he dipped and states ketones were present. He didn't really explain this properly. Has anybody else had this and if so what does it mean? Is it going to harm my baby?

Thanks in advance

  • I'm not sure why you GP would check your water for ketones, that doesn't really make any sense. Ketones are produced when the body burns fat for energy or fuel. They are also produced when you lose weight or if there is not enough insulin to help your body use sugar for energy. Without enough insulin, glucose builds up in the blood. If you're not able to eat much that would explain why you have ketones in your urine. Basically you probably need to eat more but having it show up in your water is kinda irrevelant.

  • He did not check it specifically for ketones, he was checking for a urine infection. After speaking to my GP today he has confirmed that he believes I have hyperemesis. Therefore if I do not start eating I will be admitted to hospital and be put on an IV drip. He has also prescribed anti-sickness tablets. I also have PCOS so it is very important he keeps checking my sugars as well as ketones to make sure I am not developing gestational diabetes.
  • They will check that at each visit. Basically, when ketones are present in your urine your body is breaking down fat cells for nutrition. This is great when you're trying to lose weight, but not great when you're pregnant. They will also show up if you're dehydrated. Hyperemesis would be a reason for you to have this and I do hope they get you on some medications quickly.

I was told at a visit to the ER that there were ketones in my urine and that I needed to eat more carbs. Good luck.

It's not a big deal. I had ketones in my urine once during an ER visit. The doctor said it's from not eating or drinking enough. If you're having a hard time keeping stuff down, that's probably why. If you continue to have extreme MS and you can't fix it with normal home remedies I would ask about some medication. I take Diclegis (still at 33 weeks) and it's honestly been a life saver. I was losing weight from puking 10+ times a day but it's made me able to eat and drink regularly.

ETA: I had an appointment 3 days after the ER visit and ketones were gone.
  • Drinking some type of sugar drink will help get rid of the ketones. Sprite, gatorade, ginger ale etc.
