PSA: risk versus benefits

I have the Flu. Not a cold, or anything simple, but Influenza. Lab test confirmed, Dr diagnosed. I was on day 3 of feeling yucky when my temps starting to spike. Since it was pass the 48 mark, Tamiflu is worthless.
My temps did not drop below 100.6 for 36 hours and I was 102.4 at the Dr's office. Tynelol was doing nothing for them.

Since I am in my 2nd trimester, it was discussed and agreed upon to use motrin. I have been on it for just under 24 hours, and my temps are around 99-100.5 now. I still hurt, and my cough is mad crazy, but no long with a high fever.

The fevers can cause more damage than motrin. Studies show that motrin in the first trimester can lead to miscarriages, and in the 3rd to kidney issues, but there has been no link with minor use in the 2nd trimester to any issues. That being said, I am only doing 600mg every 6 hours.

1) please, if you think you have the Flu, get tested (it is a nasal swab), and go on Tamiflu.

2) fevers can cause some serious fetal damage. They are nothing to ignore.

3) I am completely comfortable with taking a 'high risk medicine ' for a day or so. And if I needed to, i would take it longer. There is no question in my book, high fevers, or serious fetal harm (fetal growth retardation, fetal death, physical malformations, mentally challenges).

4) any issues, talk to your Dr. They have a nurse line or after hours line for a reason.
Thank God for Raid.

  • Ugh that sucks big time! Fingers crossed that your temp starts going down soon, and you can get off of the Motrin, and start feeling better!

  • That blows, I hope you start feeling better soon and recovery is quick.
  • I had the flu a couple years ago, it was awful. I now fully understand how it can be fatal for some. I cannot even imagine fighting it while pregnant. Take care of yourself!

Yes. I have a weakened immune system, and my mother is does too (F.U. Polio). I am a nurse, with small children.

However, this year's Flu shot was a shot in the dark. The latest studies show it is only about 20% effective. It is usually closer to 80%.

Knowing that, I still would gotten it.

I wasn't judging, only curious. Is that true for all flu shots this year or for just a particular kind?

So the flu shot is an educated guess. They (the lab scientists ), take the current strain that is leaving Flu season (aka, The Southern Hemisphere ), and engineer the incoming Flu vaccine based on that. Either it evolved more rapidly than usual,  or our Flu virus is not bases on the common flu but a lesser strain of the season. So it is always a hit or miss, usually a direct hit. This year, it was a miss. A large one.

  • Feel better soon!!! Your doctors will do what is best for both you and baby.
  • Sorry to hear you're so sick! Influenza is no joke - I got it in nursing school and thought I was dying. I'm with you on risk vs. benefit - sometimes there's no perfect/ideal option, just the best option available to you, and this sounds like one of those cases. Hope you get better soon.
