Does anyone know of any great ways to prevent stretch marks?

Re: Stretch Mark Prevention

  • Great question. And also, when should we start using creams? :)

  • I didn't get stretch marks until I was 36 weeks. I lotioned a LOT and gained weight slowly. My mom got minimal stretch marks so I assume it's mostly genes.

  • Well here's to hoping I have "stellar genes" as well!!
  • Not much. It's mostly genetic. Try to avoid gaining too much weight at once. (Obviously super easy to do that.)

  • Totally genetic. My mom didn't get any in pregnancy and I didn't either.

  • Genetic.. stretch marks don't appear because your skin was dry, it just depends on how much stretch there is naturally to your skin.

  • I didn't get any in my first pregnancy but DS was born at 34 weeks. I hope I get them this time because that would mean I went full term!

  • I don't know if it was because I just couldn't see them or what but I didn't get any till I gave birth than bam there it was.  And I just have one but with each pregnancy it grows.

  • This is my first pregnancy, but I'm pretty sure stretch marks are kind of luck of the draw. It's usually more genetic than anything, so the best you can do is hope!
  • I have heard stretch marks depend on your genes, but my mom passed away so I have no idea if she had them or if I'm going to get them or not!
  • Probably not something that any pregnant woman wants to hear, but eliminating or greatly reducing refined sugars and simple carbs can help.  Coconut oil on your belly for moisturizer.

  • Like everyone else said, it's all in your genes. However, moisturizing your belly is still a good idea since the stretching skin can get itchy.

  • My mom doesn't have a single stretch mark from either of her pregnancies, so I was hoping I'd inherited the same skin elasticity. But I had a boob job several years ago, and got a few stretch marks from that. This is my first pregnancy, so I'm not taking any chances. I started using Burts' Bees Belly Butter on my torso at 4 weeks, and plan to get Bio Oil soon.

there is literally nothing out there that prevents stretch marks. it's 100% genetics. if your mother got them, chances are very good that you will as well. things like bio oil & creams can help them heal tho. there's also nothing wrong with using creams & drinking lots of water to keep skin hydrated while pregnant. it will help with the itchiness.
  • I used Bio Oil and Palmer's stretch mark cream until my daughter turned one.  Stretch marks run in my family, my a** is covered in them and my mom has them all over her belly.  I have about 3 super light stretch marks.  I think I have the Bio Oil to thank for having so few.
Don't forget to put it on your boobs as well.

  • As pp said, lather up! I had designated tank tops to wear after I showered just because of the oil stains. I think I went through 3 containers of bio oil last time around.

I had never heard of bio oil until this post. N00b mom alert! Thanks ladies.
  • Genetics. Moisturize and DON'T SCRATCH your boobs or bump when they itch. I have two cat scratch marks on my belly button because of scratching. Otherwise I got lucky with good genes because I didn't get them anywhere else.
