Arm numbness at night

OK I don't know if this is something that happens to everyone. But I'm about to be 20 weeks tomorrow. Lately in the middle of the night I am woken up by my numb arm. It's even starting to hurt a little. I sleep on my right side and usually my arm is up under my head. But it'll still go numb. I wake up to a numb arm in the morning and it takes a bit to go away. Before pregnancy this has never happened to me. What is this and how do I stop it??

Re: Arm numbness at night

  • Does it go numb any other times of the day? The arm or also the fingers?
I got carpal tunnel syndrome during my first pregnancy in 2008/9 and it's never gone away since. Eventually I will have surgery. Sleeping is when it's worst.

  • No its really just at night and morning when I wake up. It eventually goes away. It's my entire arm. It started out not so bad but now it hurts. Even to close my hand it hurts.
  • No suggestions but it happens to me too. My guess is its just another lovely side effect of hormones screwing with blood pressure and circulation. If you find a fix please update, I'd love to not wake up to numb arms in the morning.
  • Well I said it's never gone away but I mean it comes and goes every day, and has never gone away for good on it own between pregnancies or anything. I do not have numb hands all the time, just when sleeping, driving, typing...lol it sucks

happens to me too. you are just sleeping on your arm funny... more likely to happen if you're not used to sleeping in the position you are in now
  • This happens to me!  I've chalked it up to being a tummy sleeper and still getting used to sleeping on my side. I guess I'm redistributing my weight in weird ways.
  • I am 20 weeks today, and have been suffering from this for some time! It's only when I'm sleeping, and just my arms, particularly the right one.
  • Happens to me too (sleeping on left side). I just chalked it up the pregnancy. My legs also get numb more easily (like if I'm hiding in the bathroom enjoying bump posts instead of working)...
  • It's been happening to me as well. I woke up this morning with my whole right arm numb. I definitely chalk it up to weird sleeping habits. I like to sleep on my stomach and don't like back or sides. I also think I'm so tired that I think when I finally fall asleep I sleep hard and that makes it more likely (for me) to sleep in an awkward position that I would normally shift out of.
  • Happens to me all the time, and not just the arm I'm sleeping on (although it's more likely to be that one). It happened less frequently before I got pregnant. Glad I'm not the only one.
  • This is reassuring to read, because I've been experiencing it as well. I do plan to mention it to my doctor at my next appointment.

  • This always happens to me when pregnant. I have the boppy maternity pillow and instead of putting it between my legs I've been putting it around my neck and putting my arms underneath it.. It seems to have helped tremendously!

  • Me as well. I talked to the Dr. about it and he said its likely carpel tunnel which is exacerbated by pregnancy. Said if it bothers me I can try sleeping in wrist braces but otherwise it will likely stop after I give birth. In all his time practicing (15+years) he has only had one patient get surgery for it after birth because it did not go away.
  • This happened to me when I was pregnant with DS. Dr said it was carpel tunnel and should go away when I gave birth (which luckily it did). He said to soak in a tub or pool (I live is AZ so a little easier for me) every day, wear a wrist brace and limit salt. It was mainly annoying when just my arms fell asleep at night. But, around 35 weeks both of my hands fell asleep and the feeling didn't come back until about two days pp.

The good news is you aren't alone but I would definitely start watching your salt intake now!

  • Maybe carpal tunnel or poor circulation from laying on your right side (the main artery from your heart is on your right side so if you're on your back or right side the baby can end up on top of it)
  • So glad I'm not the only one with this random issue! Well not glad, because I know it stinks and I'm sorry others are experiencing the issue...but glad I'm not just losing my mind. Maybe I will give braces a try. Mine makes me wake-up in pain a couple times a night.
  • I've had this since very early pregnancy. Seems to be very common. I've chalked it up to poor circulation and increased blood volume.
