Zantac and Sleeping

My LO is 7 weeks old and has GERD, to the point where she was screaming, arching her back, and refusing to nurse. Our pediatrician prescribed Zantac, 1.5 ml twice a day (she's nearly 12 lbs). We saw results within 2 days, now she's back to nursing and no screaming. However, she used to be awake most of the day and woke up a couple times a night. Now she sleeps ALL the time. Is this normal? Can it make her drowsy? Shouldn't a 7 week old be awake quite a bit? Yesterday she slept basically all day, waking up to feed and for diaper changes, finally woke up at 6pm and was up until 12:30am, then slept until 6:30am! She's been asleep except for feeds and changes again today. Am I right to be worried? DH thinks we're drugging the baby with the Zantac, but I don't want to stop the meds. She was in so much pain, and coughed a lot after nursing and spat up (sometimes painfully) after every feed. Anyone else have experience with this? I'm a FTM and I'm not sure what's normal for a baby this age. Im wondering if she was previously so wakeful because of discomfort???

Re: Zantac and Sleeping

  • It sounds more like she is gearing up for a growth spurt. Call your pediatricans office in the morning and ask.
If she is eating well and has good wet/dirty diapers then there is probably no reason for concern.

  • Thanks!! I do plan on calling - I just hate being "that" parent.

She sometimes must be woken to nurse, and her nursing sessions have gotten shorter (although I'm told that reflux babies overeat sometimes), but between 6:30am and 2:00pm she's already had 5 wet or wet/poopy diapers, so you're right - she's probably fine.

I'm just weirded out that she slept 6 hrs and was dry when she woke up. Of course she dirtied a diaper during her nursing session, so it was probably a fluke.

  • At 7 weeks she is probably just more efficient at getting out the milk. Also, I believe there is a "rule" a lot of peds go by when letting a baby sleep rather than eat. Something to do with their weight and metabolic state, not sure? Henry's ped told us never to wake him at this point as long as he is eating well while awake, is alert and has good output. We were basically told to never wake a healthy sleeping baby.
  • Ugh - wish my pediatrician felt that way. He thinks I should never let her sleep more than 4 hours, 5 max because babies younger than 2 months are just too little, especially EBF infants. But she gained 3 lbs between week 2 and week 7, I'd say she's gaining fine, so I'm just letting her sleep at night.

  • I let Henry sleep as long as he wants at night. One night he did 9 hours and unless he is cluster feeding for a growth spurt, he easily does 5-8 stretches. He tripled his birthweight by his 2 month appointment so I doubt he is missing any nutrients ;)
  • I don't have experience with Zantac but have noticed with DS if he hasn't felt well and had enough sleep then once he feels better and that relief hits him he'll do nothing but sleep and his always been very active. He did this when we got him on the right formula and his poor tummy felt better. Suddenly he went from having to be held to sleep 2-3 hrs to sleeping 6-7 hrs in his crib.

If she was cluster feeding before I would think growth spurt though. Either way it should pass relatively quickly.

What formula may I ask was the right one?
  • @kdoak2015 Having multiple protein intolerance he did pretty well with Enfamil Gentlease at first and later Similac Total comfort. The reflux he had got better with age and I'd say the worst was past by around 4-6 months.
  • Ah we have a long journey then still. She still spits up quite s but on gentle ease but doesn't wrench as much. Thinking similac is our next try.

Henry has reflux and gets gassy easily. We had to supplement in the first couple of weeks and he was switched back and forth from breastmilk to formula, Similac was very easy on his preemie tummy and he seemed to not notice a difference in taste as it taste pretty sweet like breastmilk.

Yes. We supplemented with DD in the beginning with Similac and she did well switching between it and breastmilk. With DS we tried some gerber and switched back to Enfamil when it was done. He would never take the Gentlease again but did seem to like Gerber Soothe and Similac Total Comfort.

@kdoak2015 what formulas have you tried so far?

For the first 7 weeks we used the ready to feed formulas only so we tried enfamil, nestle, similac and then switched back to nestle because she seemed to do best on that.
We just started her last week on the powder and she's been on gentle ease now for a week. She still spits up quite a bit(we are on slow flow premie nipples and burp her as much as she'll allow us to(cries when she knows she's going to get burped)).
I think we'll try the similac of things don't balance out for her by the end of this week.
  • @kdoak2015 Has it mostly been the routine formulas besides Gentlease then? There are so many options as far as soy and partially hydrolyzed protein formula that may help. Of you're wanting to stay with ready to feed formulas there's Similac Alimentum.

We are ok to move away from rtf formulas. I really wanted to stick to cow based formula as I'm not sure about soy base and it's nutrition. Also when we start on actually milk I don't want it to be a big shock. Well give similac a try. I may also push for reflux meds at this weeks apt. I don't want to drug my kid up but I feel bad for her and want solutions.
  • @kdoak2015 I understand with soy. There's still some concerns about long term effects from the phytoestrogens in it so I wouldn't want to use it either except as a last resort.

I'm not sure how much you've read up on types of formulas but part of the reason I suggested alimentum is that like total comfort and some other formulas, it's milk based but the protein is partially hydrolyzed meaning it's been broken down some and is easier for some babies to digest. It's the same idea as the "comfort proteins" marketed in Gerber formulas and why babies with protein intolerance sometimes do well with it.
  • Hmm I'll have to give it a try i thought it was soy based as well thanks.
  • @Elizabella85 did you ever ask your pediateician about this?  DD started Zantac and has been napping more. I'm playing phone tag with the nurse line.
  • My baby is 8 weeks and on zantac 3x a day with only 0.8
