Sharp pain in lower abdomen...

Hi Ladies, I'm 5 weeks, 3 days pregnant. I'm experiencing some sharp pains in my lower abdomen. No bleeding. I wouldn't say this is a cramping pain. Anyone relate?

Re: Sharp pain in lower abdomen...

  • Could be round ligament pain but it's very early for that. Is it more to one side?

  • I had a lot of sharp pains in my left lower abdomen earlier on.  They were isolated to a single spot - I could literally put my finger on it.  I don't know what they were, exactly, but they are gone now and I haven't had any other issues to indicate it having been a problem.  Pain, cramps, pulling, tugging, etc are all really normal symptoms several ladies here have described over the past several weeks.  If it gets really painful or you're stressing out about it, it never hurts to call your doctor.

  • If it is one specific side, it could be the ovary you ovulated from. When you go for your first sono they'll be able to identify which one.
  • @RedMar That's interesting, I did not know that!  I'm going to ask about it at my next appointment...maybe that'll explain what I was experiencing.  I wonder, though, what my OB will think when I ask, "So, did the ultrasound tech happen to jot down whether or not I ovulated out of my left ovary this time?"  LOL.  (I'll try to come up with a less ridiculous way of wording the question.)  ;)

  • Yup, it could be any of what PPs said, I wouldn't worry about it unless you're doubled over in pain half the day. I had sharp pains in my lower abdomen around that time and I was worried but it was completely normal. I would get it when I got up from a sitting position or when I sneezed or coughed. If this sounds like you, just get up slowly and bend your knees when coughing or sneezing (even if you're sitting down), you'll look silly (I did when I squatted down to sneeze at a Starbucks parking lot) but it works! That's muscular pain, there's a whole lot of stretching and pulling going on down there so it's to be expected.

  • Yes, I've experienced dull aches on my lower right side (abdomen, hip, back) and more recently a few sharp twinges in the center. It's freaky, but so far no bleeding so I'm waiting patiently until my appointment in four weeks. :/

  • I've been having what I'm pretty sure is round ligament pain. I know it's early but I don't know what else it would be. Sharp pain one one or both sides when I twist or get up too quickly or when I cough. @AlwaysAuntNeverMom I like the idea of squatting to sneeze!! Definitely silly, but I think it will probably help. Thanks!

  • I've been occasionally getting a dull ache on my left side. I'm guessing it's probably bowel related, but I have wondered if it's the side I ovulated from.

  • Round ligament pain happens at different times for everyone. With my first I started feeling it within a few weeks after I found out but I was also very tiny and needed lots of stretching. With my other 3 I felt the same again within a few weeks of knowing but I think it was more muscle memory and preparation for the change. This is number 5 and I started feeling the same pains this week and I'm only on week 5. It is not unrealistic for any woman to feel them this early.
  • I say this with the caveat that only an ultrasound can tell you for sure, but I've had left side aches/pains and I have a corpus luteum cyst on the ovary I ovulated from. It's totally normal and should go away by the second trimester, but I was told that it can definitely cause some discomfort. Might be worth asking about when you have your U/S.

  • Relieved to hear that I'm not the only one experiencing those strange lower abdomen pains..........there are just so many new/strange feelings, and it's hard to not immediately assume the worst!
