Appliance Color Opinons!

Looking for appliance color opinions. We have white cupboards and a medium wood floor. BLACK appliances look great with our white cupboards. They do not get fingerprints and they last longer because the material does not ding, dent, scratch without a lot of effort and they do not get fingerprints. STAINLESS STEEL costs more, dings/dents/scratches easily, gets fingerprints, but seems to be what everyone wants. However, our options for black appliances are severely limited. Everything is stainless steel. Thoughts? One more thought. Would it look bad to have BLACK appliances but a STAINLESS STEEL range? My thought is maybe since a range is half black anyway (grates, viewable oven front, etc) it might not look bad. But I thought I should get opinions. Thank you!

Re: Appliance Color Opinons!

  • We had all black appliances with a stainless oven in our condo and it didn't look right once it was all together.  It was a small space and we had one of the most updated units on the market when we were selling, so it didn't matter much, but I think in general the appliances really should all match.

  • Your kitchen sounds like mine! We have white cabinets, medium wood floor. What color is the rest (i.e. counter tops, back splash, walls?). Currently, I have a grey theme going on and I love contrast so my white cabinets have dark hardware. We have all WHITE appliances, primarily because our walls are pretty dark, and the counter tops and back splash are relatively dark too, so I think adding black appliances too might darken it too much, but who knows.

I say go all black. Do what works for you. Stainless steel would have higher resale, but most homeowners take appliances with them anyway.

Do people really take appliances with them???  I would never take appliances with me if I moved, unless I KNEW that the buyers were going to throw them out.  The fridge in our condo was brand new, so we specifically asked if they were planning to keep it because if not we'd take it and just keep it in our new garage as a second fridge, but they planned to use it so we left it.  I also would expect that any house I purchase would have appliances, and if it didn't I would expect the sellers to provide funding for us to purchase new ones.  Very interesting!

  • While I would love to have 100% stainless appliances, the cost is definitely limiting. We have all black with the exception of our stove which is stainless and black and it looks perfectly fine.

We have a modern kitchen with blue lower cabinets and white uppers, and white countertops. Our fridge is black, our cooktop is black, and our dishwasher, hood, and oven are stainless steel. I think they look nice together and not at all out of place.

ETA: we do have both black and stainless steel in other parts of the kitchen that kind of tie everything in - black sinks and black island faucet, and stainless steel door handles and main kitchen faucet. The fridge also has stainless steel door handles.
  • I love our stainless steel appliances. Our kitchen has dark wood cabinets and a medium to dark wood floor though, so the stainless steel is a nice contrast. The smudges were really annoying at first, but since I switched to cleaning them with an actual stainless steel cleaner it has definitely been better.
  • Our counters are a lighter to medium color and I haven't picked out my backsplash yet! :) Our walls are medium. So overall, our kitchen is on the lighter size, except our current black appliances.
