Babymoon Ideas since Mexico and Caribbean are out due to Zika virus??

Hi Everyone!

My husband and I were planning on going to Puerto Vallarta in June for our Babymoon but now with the Zika virus, we really aren't comfortable putting our little one in danger. I was REALLY hoping for a beachy place with a town for walking around and shopping. Any ideas? And if you have ideas for places that aren't like that-- I'm all ears! We live in NC so we have already visited Myrtle Beach, Atlanta, New York, Boston, Charleston, Savannah, etc.....

Thanks!!

  • Is europe an option? I'd love to go to Greece or Spain!
  • Loading the player...
  • I can recommend Jersey and Delaware shore towns...not exactly a destination for people outside the neighboring states but happy to make recommendations.

  • Have you thought of Florida (east or west coast)? It's not as exciting as Spain but there are a lot of beautiful beaches...
  • We were thinking of Florida but after seeing the statement from the WHO this morning that it will likely spread to the Americas we'll prob stay away from swampy areas. But honestly mosquitos can be anywhere- forests, beaches, swamps.
Our backup spots are Big Sur and DC but idk if I'll be up for all that walking at about 4 months pregnant in DC.
I've pretty much accepted that I'll just lather on the mosquito repellent every time I go out.
  • We went to France for our babymoon and it was great.  Lots of walking though which was a bit harder on my 20 week pregnant feet than I expected.  A good friend went to Boston and actually enjoyed it more than she expected, so maybe just staying in the States would be an option?
  • I am honestly quite scared.  I know the chances will probably be small but even before this I always kept a bottle of bug spray in my car.  I get bit more than anyone I have ever met, it is kind of a joke in my friend circles.  I was so looking forward to summer but not anymore really....
  • We are planning on going to Hawaii early April but....idk :(
  • I hear you with the fear, btw! I was planning a FL vacation at the end of March and I might rethink depending one where we are at with the spread of Zika by then. So far there's only been three confirmed cases in FL (and all were from travelers) but still! I take a lot of comfort of being in MN where there are currently no mosquitoes!
  • @mom2adoodle we live in Hawaii right now and I am very nervous about this too. We have had one confirmed case so far... Not obtained here but a woman was pregnant, traveled to Brazil, came back here and had her baby who was affected by it... We are already having issues with dengue fever spread by mosquitos in the big island (I live on Oahu) so the government is actively working to contain the mosquito problem already. What worries me is that all it takes is someone to get infected, they travel back here infected and a local mosquito bites them and becomes infected... That's all it takes. The climate here is habitable to mosquitos year round and I am already prone to bites... Scary stuff..
  • I live in FL! We were going to get the serious mosquito spray system since we do not have the screened in pool. But I'll probably be so damn hot and pregnant you couldn't pay me to leave the AC this summer.

  • Sigh, I think at this point we are looking at Palm Springs in June-- hot and dry. And using a deet-based repellant. I honestly feel sick to my stomach because where I live, in the summer it is like a Mosquito haven. I'm looking up all sorts of mosquito sprays for our house and for my parent's. This is seriously terrifying.

I did find this info on Deet and Pregnancy-- so, at least that is safe: https://mothertobaby.org/fact-sheets/deet-nn-ethyl-m-toluamide-pregnancy/pdf/
  • Not to mention we are scheduled to go to a wedding in Ft. Lauderdale mid-march and today they confirmed zika in Miami!!

  • I'm kind of a nature lover, so this may not be for everyone.. but I was thinking maybe Acadia national Park or the Great Smoky Mountains. There are many light hiking trails that wouldn't be too strenuous.. lakes to swim in and get some fresh air.

  • We are going to destin in June

I would avoid Europe what with all the Isis crap going on
  • Come to California: Central Coast is super nice...anywhere from Monterey down to San Luis Obispo...we, however, are going to Hawaii in April...already paid for the trip

  • Does it seem to matter when during the pregnancy the virus is contracted matters at all?

  • ^sorry, but that's a pretty broad, ridiculous statement. I'd go to Europe in a heartbeat if I could. Having a toddler makes that tough.

With that said, OP you can also look into doing a California trip.

I suppose it's mostly the Greece reference I was talking about. I've seen some pretty disturbing things going on there, and I personally would not go to main land Europe. I might go to the islands, but again that's just me. Feel free to think me ridiculous.
  • My husband and I are going to Japan. It's no problem to tote a kid with you on a cruise, but when are we going to get another chance to go somewhere so different if we're worrying we'll lose a kid in the most populous city in the world?

It is suspected that infection during the first trimester is when the problems occur but this is just based on observation. The mechanism of how the virus causes deformity is still unknown.

"around 80 per cent of the mothers whose babies had microcephaly in Rio Grande do Norte also had symptoms compatible with Zika in their first trimester."

I agree with PPs, it's scary stuff. The massive number of Brazilian babies with microcephaly is heartbreaking. I'm relieved that I'll be out of the first trimester by the time mosquito season hits in the mid-Atlantic, but I'm continuing to monitor the latest research and updates.
  • We are trying to plan a baby moon trip ourselves but this is scary stuff!! I think we have decided on Florida but now I'm worried about that as well as there have been confirmed cases there. I guess I will just have to be super diligent about bug spray if we are outdoors. Other ideas we had were Scottsdale, AZ, San Diego, or Central Coast of California.

  • We are still planning to go to Hawaii in May, but I'll definitely be extra careful keeping covered in bug spray.
  • I've read a little about the virus, but I'm still not clear how it can be contracted. I get the gist that it's the Aedes mosquito spreading it, but can you catch it from another human? I saw via sexual contact or through breast milk is also a possibility. Is it similar to HIV in that sense?
  • Also in response to PP, some times I feel more unsafe here in the US than in Europe. I'd be willing to bet we have way more citizens here/people on a green card that are affiliated with ISIS than most European countries. Don't let the bad guys run your life, they're "winning" if you allow this to happen.
  • @Pepper6 I live on Oahu right now and as far as a know the only real mosquito issues have been Dengue fever on Big Island, so if you pick a different island you should be clear (: just keep up with the news between now and then!
  • San Diego! Ocean Beach is amazing.
  • I've been thinking about this a lot because we've been trying to plan a cruise for the summer, and why not go on a cruise to wherever but just stay on the boat and inside the cabin when you arrive at a port? You'll miss the excursions unfortunately, but cruises are still so much fun and the dangers of the virus would be nonexistent while at sea. Unless my understanding of mosquito travel and boundaries is wrong...
  • Oh and another idea is to have a spa vacation! There are tons of beautiful spa resorts within the US to choose from, and that way you'll DEFINITELY be relaxed!

Right now there is only one case of sexual contact and non confirmed through breast milk. The way it spreads is straight up mosquito bites. This newscast was very informative.

There is a higher risk of the baby developing microencephalitis during the first trimester. But pray about where's the best place to go at any time.

  • Ok I just have to laugh at this post. The first time I heard of a "baby moon" was when my coworker who is 23 had her baby last year. Us older women kind of looked at each other like what in the world is that??? You get a break before the baby is due I assume?? LOL just very weird IMO. I guess I was to excited to consider taking time away and I was saving every penny for my LO. But hey to each there own. It really makes me feel old when I have no idea what's going on anymore.
  • @jennlynn777 I totally get it! For us, it's our vacation but a nicer one that we wouldn't take small children to since we will do family vacations from now on....it's something we budgeted for in advance of TTC. :)
