How much to pay a nanny?

How much should I pay our nanny per hour if she watches the baby in our home? She's a friend of the family, so it's not like she has a going rate. She would be at our home for about 10 hours a day, and would be asked to do dishes or laundry while the baby is sleeping.

In the Midwest where I live, nannies are paid $10-12/hour.

For around here, it would depend on how old the baby is (is transporting or special care needed?), previous experience, the hours needed (can they work another job or are the hours such that this could be their only position?) and other services rendered. Bearing in mind that childcare is tax deductible in many states so long as your provider gives you a statement showing how much you've paid, it'd be standard to start at minimum wage then go up from there. It's a fine line when you're employing a friend of the family. How much is too much and how much is too little? I'd go off of how much it would cost you to have LO in daycare for that length of time. It'll require some research, but most daycares cost $150-200 per week.

This varies soooo much by location. The average rate here in MA is about $350 a week.

Wow. That's insane! But I guess average salaries in MA are higher than here in Illinois. 2 weeks of daycare in MA costs the same as my monthly rent for a 3 bedroom here. Wishing all families the best of luck!
