Swings

I have been battling with the baby swings lately. I cannot decide if I should get the 4moms "mamaroo" or "rockaroo" OR go with another brand that is cheaper. I am bringing this up because Target has stellar deals right now on the swing and a 40$ giftcard. Anyone have any thoughts, opinions or insight on swings - particularly the 4moms brand. THANKS!

Re: Swings

  • I asked this in the target thread, but will ask here too bc my question is more on topic here. Can anyone explain all the mamaroo rockaroo swing model differences? Any experience.

I had the fisher price snug a bunny swing for our first, and she LOVED it. However, I will keep a swing at my parents house as well, and we had to give back the one they used last time from my best friend. So my thoughts are to give the fisher price back to my mom and get a new one, but just need some advice as well!

Just to clarify, the main reason I am not getting a FP swing again is I am very interested in how much less space the 4moms swings take up!

  • I plan on getting a 4 Moms mamaroo swing.  My sister and BIL have one for my 2-month-old niece, and they love it.  It doesn't take up much room, it is lightweight enough to travel with, and very quiet.
  • I'm a FTM but when we were registering, the sales associate helping us at Buy Buy Baby said that the only reason they are more expensive is because of the name. We ended up going with a different brand because we didn't want to spend that much money to have our kiddos hate it.
  • I also use FP but am looking at the Graco Glider to save on space. LOVE the Snugamonkey though

  • I have the Mamaroo and used it for DD. I loved it because it was small and didn't take up much space and had lots of different movement settings. DD didn't like it nearly as much as I did, unfortunately! She was never content in it for more than a few minutes. So I guess my word of caution is to not spend too much money on any one thing, because you never know what your kid's preference is going to be. I am really hoping baby boy likes the Mamaroo more than his sister did!
  • I'm not going to be any help in this thread, but I'm following because I keep going round and round about whether or not to get a swing. We tried a hand-me-down Fisher Price one with DS and he hated it, but did well in the PNP, Graco Lounger, and a carrier wrap. This time around, I'm not sure If I should try something else, or just do without. We don't have a ton of space to play with, so I prefer compact and/or versatile things. I looked into maybe getting the Graco Cozy Duet that's a rocker/swing combo, but I'm just not sure.
  • A friend will likely be lending us her mamaroo. She said her daughter was good in it up to 2-3 months, then didn't like it anymore. And my sister will be lending us her I believe graco swing. So we'll have both just in case. I don't think the rockaroo does as much as the mamaroo, but then again I'm not sure what's the difference. When you look at the mamaroo, one of the differences I've noted is that the more expensive model comes with a newborn insert (more cushy to support the head).
  • We have both kinds because people gave them to us/let us borrow. I've heard mixed reviews on the mamaroo, some babies loved it and some didn't. I would definitely get some sort of swing contraption, and if you don't have much space I would say the mamaroo is going to be a better option.
  • My guess is as long as it swings/vibrates/rocks/etc. the baby will either love it or hate it. I'm not too worried about having bluetooth hooked up to it or anything. I think that's where extra costs come in. But if that's something that works for you and your family, go for it!

I've also wrestled with this choice but the Rockaroo really seems like the best option for us, so that's what I registered for. It isn't cheap but not quite as expensive as the Mamaroo but about the same size which is crucial for our small apartment. The difference is that the Rockaroo has one basic back and forth rocking motion at 5 speeds with a basic knob to adjust the setting vs the Mamaroo which has 5 different motions each at different speeds, built-in sounds, a touch pad control, and blue tooth capability.

If I wasn't concerned about space or cost I'd also be very interested in the Nuna Leaf.

ETA: The website really lays it all out well:

  • Y'all the most important thing about getting a swing is getting one that plugs into an outlet. We foolishly bought a battery powered one, and it's only place DD would sleep. So when the batteries died, I'd frantically run up to our room and silently change out the batteries while swinging her with my foot to keep her from waking up. It wasn't pretty. All other details are really not important in my opinion, the baby won't care if it has bluetooth or glides vs rocks.
  • We got a swing/bouncer combo with DS. I liked that it was a 2in1 so I thought it would take up less space but this swing is huge! DS really loved it as a newborn. If we didn't already have this swing I would definitely splurge on a mamaroo!

  • We have the mamaroo and I loved it! So did my baby!
We used it for almost 5 months!!!
When he was a newborn he spent a lot of time in it, and it was a great help when he wouldn't sleep at night!
I know some babies don't like swings, but my DS loved the side to side motion that mimic a car ride.
We never used the Bluetooth or anything like that.
I also really like the design and the amount of space it takes.

Thanks! So your DS did sleep in it at night? I was thinking if my LO doesn't like the crib right away he could sleep in the mamroo?
  • We bought the Graco Duet above too, but PP is not kidding, it is humongous. We eventually decided the convenience of the 2-in-1 wasn't worth the giant footprint, so we sent it back. Haven't decided what to get instead. I have one friend who has a Mamaroo, but her baby has never really liked it. I'm hesitant to spend so much on something my LO might hate! And if anyone is inclined to spend that much on a gift for us, I would probably rather have a nicer car seat, since I know we'll use that whether LO likes it or not. :)
  • My MIL bought us a fp space saver swing with ds1. Of course we stored it in the basement which flooded between ds1 and ds2. We bought another one for ds2 and plan to use it again with ds3. I'd like to get something bigger though because it sits on the ground and for some reason it takes me alot of time to recover my abs from c sections and it's hard to get him out of it since it sits so low I have to be on the floor to do it. I really like the swing itself and don't want to replace it though, especially since this is our last baby.
  • We have the fisher price snugabunny and the 4moms rockaroo. They're totally different and DS loved them both but we were able to use the snugabunny for longer. It's just massive and we don't have space for it now as DS's toys and play area are now occupying the area the swing lived last time. Hoping baby likes the rockaroo otherwise we will be rearranging the living room again temporarily.

The rockaroo/mamaroo is expensive so I would suggest getting it just before baby is due so you can still return if they don't like it. Buy Buy Baby allowed 30 day returns even if it was gently used back in 2014 when we bought ours. You never know what they'll like until you try it out unfortunately.
  • I think one of the biggest issues with mamaroo is the cost and then not knowing if baby will like it. DH told me last night " our son WILL enjoy it for that cost", made me LOL! We're still debating ....the other swing we have our eye on is the FP Snugapuppy deluxe
  • We got a second hand mamaroo on Craigslist with our first and loved it! It was def a lifesaver for the first 3-4 months. Very lightweight and didn't take up much room.

I would never pay full price for it, but was worth scouring Bookoo and Craigslist for.

  • We had the snuggabunny one with DD and she loved it! but it does take up a lot of space (which we seem to be running out of!) so I am considering the momaroo just for the space-saving aspect. I will only purchase one if I find it in our second hand stores! I am on the lookout, but if I don't find one for a decent price we will stick with the snuggabunny.
