Traveling at 33 weeks Pregnant

I need some advice. I have had a great and easy going 1st pregnancy so far at almost 20 weeks. My Husband and I are celebrating my 30th birthday when I am around 33 weeks pregnant. As this is a BIG one, I don't want to stay local to my area, but not sure how far away we can go, without it getting to complicated. And my husband is worried about prepaying for things, and then not being able to go. Have any of you traveled by car, during this time, with ease, and were comfortable and had energy to do things?

We live near Notre Dame University in South Bend, IN.

  • Please check with your doctor.

  • What @MamaNicoleof3 said. My office recommends against unnecessary travel more than an hour or so away during the 3rd trimester just in case you go into labor and can't make it back in time. Discuss your plans with your doctor and see what they say, they know your pregnancy and your body and can make a much more educated decision than we can.
  • I would be cautious about going to far.  I went into labor with my son at 34 weeks after a check-up the week before where everything looked absolutely normal.  I wouldn't want to be in a place too far away to get to my regular doctor and place I'd planned to give birth.  However, many other women have travelled at 33 weeks with no problem at all.  If you do decide to go, I'd suggest getting some information to carry with you from your doctor.  When I travelled at 24 weeks, I had a paper I could take with me that had my doctor's information, hospital information to request medical records and general medical info about my pregnancy, just in case.
  • its up to you and your doctor. I've never had mine tell me to limit travel until 34 weeks, and I would have been comfortable driving up to 3 hours at that point, but no more.

That's just my experience, many people are more catious

  • It will depend on your doctor. I traveled 6 hours when I was 34 weeks with DS1, and has plans to do the same with DS2 but landed in the hospital with kidney stones. I always check with my OB because we travel alot. DH family is 3 states away. We are high risk this time so won't be traveling in 3rd tri, but I was always told to stop every 1.5 to 2 hours to walk, drink alot and try to use a low heat pad if my back started to hurt.
  • It's up to your doctor AND you! If you would be Ok delivering your baby in the destination of your choice, and your doctors OKs the trio, go for it. Sometimes it's as much about personal comfort as it is doctors recommendation too.

Can you take off a little early? Needing to "go big" and go in a trip at 33 weeks seems a bit... Unnessessary IMO.

  • At some point in my third tri with my last one (I don't remember exactly when), my midwife gave me all my medical records relating to my pregnancy to travel with at all times. I would recommend getting something like that from your doctor before you leave just in case you end do end up in an unfamiliar hospital. I wouldn't book anything you can't get out of either; if you're driving all you should need to book is a hotel or something, though, and those you can typically cancel with pretty late notice (unlike flights). Driving at that point will be uncomfortable, but how uncomfortable depends on your body and your pregnancy. I would avoid booking anything until you're closer to that time and know how you feel at that point and how your third tri is going
  • I agree with checking with your doctor.  I know they told me with my last pregnancy, you are at greater risk for blood clots with traveling long distances in the car.  So at the very least, make lots of stops to get out and walk around!

  • Could you celebrate a few weeks early? That way you won't have to worry
  • St. Joseph or Holland, MI have some great places to 'get away' to! Chicago & Indy are also some great choices that are within a couple hours, drive time.
  • I just talked to my doctor about this last week. My sister in law and I have the same birthday and I just found out she's moving to Seattle next month. I'll be 33 weeks at our birthday (we must be close too!). My doctor said I could fly up to 34 weeks and that Seattle was an acceptable location/ place to have a baby (but he wasn't in favor of the idea). He didn't recommend going to any small towns or Mexico. If we go (realistically we probably won't) we won't book tickets until 2-3 weeks out and we'll fly southwest. The prices don't go up until that close and if we end up not wanting to go last minute they don't have a change fee so we'll just visit late fall instead.

I know the date seems important but I'd go a month earlier. You'll feel better and enjoy the trip a lot more. Plus you can also go out for a nice dinner on your birthday - bonus!

  • I traveled at 37 weeks in my last pregnancy. My grandfather passed away and we drove 8 hours for the funeral. I talked to my OB about it and she said that as long as we stopped every 90 or do minutes to walk around for at least 15 minutes that she was ok enough with it. She also made sure that I was ok giving birth in the city I was traveling to, which I was--we moved to Chicago in the middle of my pregnancy so I actually had a relationship established with an OB where we were going.

  • If you do decide to travel, the west side of Michigan is beautiful and depending on how the weather is it could be a nice getaway. Plus, there are a ton of areas within a few hours drive from S Bend. I also can confidently say there are many very nice hospitals in those areas as well. If you have any questions about places to visit in MI-I'm your girl!
