How cold is too cold?

As many of us have discovered, the worst part about having a newborn in the winter is not being able to go ANYWHERE. I am jonesing to take baby (and me) for a walk in the stroller, but I don't know how cold is too cold regardless of how much you bundle them up. She's been out in her stroller twice and absolutely loves it!

Re: How cold is too cold?

  • I probably won't take LO out for a walk in our neighborhood until it's at least 45-50 days and there's no wind.  I can take chilly, but when it's windy, UGH! I'm a big baby about it haha. Plus, with all of the snow we have right now, pushing a stroller isn't exactly the easiest thing to do outside at the moment.

I've taken him to the mall though and have walked around a bit.  It's warm, I can do a little shopping and he too, loves his stroller. It's a win, win for both of us. =D

  • @teachmegs817 so it's safe to take them to the mall?? Sounds ideal to me. I'm the same way with wind, I can't stand it!! I live in Ocean City, NJ and even though we got slammed with water this weekend it's surprisingly nice out today
  • My ped said no mall or supermarket (or anywhere really crowded) until 8-12 weeks but if it's 40 degrees out or higher get the baby outside. He said the sun will definitely be a good thing. Looking forward to the warmer temps next week (also in South Jersey).
  • @scornwell717My LO will be 6w Wednesday.  I started feeling pretty comfortable taking him out around 4w.  The longest we were ever out was 3 hours.  That was the mall trip I took. We've taken him out to restaurants a hand full of times since birth, and have been gone between 1-2 hours. DH and I were feeling super lazy and didn't want to cook so we took DS out at 2 weeks.  I kind of felt guilty about doing it.  He was born preemie, so he was really only 36w gestational age. Some people thought/think I am nuts for bringing him out even now at almost 6w.

  • @teachmegs817 do you live in a more rural area or closer to a city? That does surprise me that you took him out at 2 weeks! But hey, clearly he's alright :)

@livins where in south jersey do you live if you don't mind me asking??
  • @scornwell717 I'm in Central NY, near Syracuse.
  • @teachmegs817 oh wow, you're pretty up there! My best friend from college grew up in the Rochester area, not sure if that's anywhere close :) but yeah, now that you told me you brought your little preemie baby out so young I feel better about bringing my baby out!
  • I don't see the point in not doing what you need to do with your little one with. I bought a snowsuit and car seat cover as well as warm blankets. It has been super cold where I live so I am ensuring baby will be warm but I'm diabetic so I will have to get insulin and have doctors appointments.
  • I went out with my baby at two weeks. I just kept her in the car seat or in my wrap. There's a beautiful botanical garden near where we live, and it's basically like Florida in there all the time (warm and sunny). It was perfect for both of us to get in a gentle walk and lots of sunshine.
  • I'm not sure about outside temps being too cold...I live in TX so it's not as much of an issue here. I would think as long as baby is warm enough that it's okay to take them out. With my DS (July baby) I took him to church at 3 days old, to family's houses around a week old and stores, restaurants, etc by 2 weeks old. He was born on his due date, no health issues or anything. No one but immediate family/grandparents really touched him on those outings. Since it looks like this baby will be born term I'll probably do about the same with her, although I will be more cautious of non immediate family holding and touching since it's technically cold and flu season, although our area has had a very low report of both so far.

Wow.  my pedi said 2 weeks.  Maybe because it was in the beginning of cold/flu season and not right in the middle of it when I had my son.

I would take the new little baby out if it's above 20 degrees.  I would just put her in her stroller with a couple of really warm blankets covering her, a really warm hat, and the stroller hood that goes all the way over her.  I'd probably throw a blanket on top of the stroller hood too if I'm going for more than 10 or 15 minutes, just to make sure the cold air doesn't get to her.  Either that, or wear her in her carrier close to my skin under my coat and put a warm hat on her so my body heat will keep her warm.

My DS was born at 36w gestational age too and I got a load of crap from my inlaws about not wanting to take him out until he was 2 weeks old.  That's how long our pediatrician suggested we wait.

I'm surprised people think you're crazy for bringing him out at 6 weeks!

  •  @Life is Exciting I think at this point, it's more that we are in the middle of winter here and it's cold/windy/snowy and I'm okay with bringing him around people.  I usually get; "You're brave for bringing him out in this cold and around people."  "Aren't you afraid of germs and him catching a cold?"

  • I would go so stir crazy. We took our little one to target at like 4 days old, we needed some things that I wasn't exactly sure on the specifics of, and since I wasn't allowed to drive yet Hubby and I went together with the baby.
  • We've been taking our LO out since she was about a week old. We went out to lunch, we've been to the grocery store and Target several times. The way I see it is we've already been to the Drs office three times for weight checks and that must be one of the germiest places ever with all the sick kids going through that place so Target should be no big deal. I plan on going in mall walks starting this week now that I got hang of using the stroller. Its too cold out for me to walk outside but I can't wait for it to get warmer to get out and get some exercise.
  • @KFrob I thought the same exact thing about the pediatricians office! I mean, where I go it has separate waiting rooms for sick and well visits, but that doesn't mean the germs aren't in the air and all throughout the rooms and hallways. That never really made sense to me. So Target and mall trips it is!
  • Target is still my sacred place and I choose to leave LO home with DH while I go there.  I feel as if, it still deserves my undivided attention, lol. :p Although, maybe if LO came along, I'd spend less money because I'd be focused on him, he'd be taking up most of the cart space with the carrier, and I'd be on borrowed time in case he woke up/had to feed him.  :D
  • @scornwell717 we're in Mt. Laurel right outside of Philly.
  • I took LO to Target the other day when it was snowing/sleeting. He was almost 4 weeks.
I also took him to Walmart at two weeks old.
SO works 6 out of 7 days at least 12hrs a day. If I don't go out and do things - things just don't get done.

But I'm DYING to go for a walk I'm super flabby lol - but I'm going to wait until the weather gets better. It's supposed to be in the 60's this weekend ( that's the south- snows one weekend 60's the next) so I may go walk in my parents neighborhood away from people that I would be around at the park.

I say use your judgement :)
  • I can't wait to get out for walks. My doc told me to get out and take him shopping and to the mall. It would be good for me mentally to get out and I need to get used to caring for him solo with DH going back to work. We actually took him out shopping at 4 days old. I needed a nursing bra and that wasn't something hubby could get for me. I put him in his car seat then put a blanket over his legs. And I keep a car seat cover over him. I take it to the side for s bit of fresh air but around people I keep it closed.

I feel like outside in the cold is better than inside where it's stuffy and people share an airsupply.
  • @livins I know exactly where mt. Laurel is, one of my aunts lives there :) and I grew up in Winslow! Very familiar with all of south jersey, and love all my fellow south jersians
