Diaper sizes

My LO is in between diaper sizes. The newborns squeeze her little tummy (and leak up the back) but the size 1 is too big in the legs (so we have leakage with those too). We have tried huggies and pampers swaddlers. Anyone else run into this and have any suggestions?

LO went through the same with Huggies Snug and Dry. He was between sizes 1 and 2. We decided to go with size 2 and tighten them a bit (not too much to make him uncomfortable). We have not had any issues since.

We had the same issue. I kept DD in the newborn size for longer bc she leaked less than in the size 1. I then transitioned to cloth and not a leak since!!

My lo just changed into size 3 diapers. He turns 3 months On February 3rd. He is 18lbs and 24inches.

When LO started consistently leaking out of NB Pampers Swaddlers, I tried Honest brand but those leaked even worse. I moved him up to size 1 Pampers, which are huge on him but I tightened them up a bit and he hasn't had any leaks since.

DH and I have 25 cloth diapers (12 light colored, 13 dark) and we wash every other day (alternating between light and dark)..: you don't really want to leave them more than 2 days because the poop sets in.

We have the bumgenius freetime diapers, which are all in ones. They're super easy to use. You throw the whole thing in the wash and then hang to dry. Since there's no stuffing or anything, it's really easy. With our washing machine, I do a light wash, then a heavy wash, then an extra rinse. All told it takes about 1.5 hours but I don't have to pay attention to the machine during that time. I just turn the dial when one cycle is up then go about my business.

We've only had one pee leak (and that was because DH and I thought the other had changed the diaper so he sat in it for like 5 hours. Oops!). We do get poopsplosions if the elastic around the legs isn't tight enough so we check the legs for gaps each time we change the diaper. They're easily adjusted and will fit LO until he's 35ish pounds. Or potty trained. Hopefully potty training comes first.

If she is leaking out the legs make sure the little ruffles around the legs are out, not tucked back inside the diaper.
No one told me this with DS once we started checking the ruffles were out no more leg leaks.

Before LO went to cloth, we had him in size 1s. I will say they looked huge on him but as one pp mentioned, as long as the legs were flared out, leaks didn't happen and he was fine. Huge isn't necessarily a bad thing

This is what we did (kept LO in newborns longer). Then we tightened the size 1 more at the waistband. When you pull the front tab over more, it leaves less room in the leg area.

We had this problem when little man was fist born. Make sure the Ruffles are out, but also point the tabs downward on baby's belly. It made the legs fit tighter.

Thanks @lialetellier. I've had her in the bigger size but the problem is it's too loose in the legs, it fits her chubby little tummy! I'll just make due until it fits. She grows like a weed anyway, it won't be long.

@queenwog I do prefer the pampers swaddlers to the huggies brand. They fit better

We are trying to transition into a size one as well. LO is 9 weeks old. They go all the way up her back and are huge. We're having leaks with NB though

The size 1 Pampers Swaddlers seem larger to me than the size 1 Huggies Snug 'n Dry. Which type of Huggies did you try?

Wow @ZoeH3 ! DD is just under 10lb and as you can see barely fits in a 1! Size 3 would probably reach her chin

My son is 12 weeks and around 13lbs (haven't weighed him for awhile) and we are just starting to use size 2, the size ones fit still but we have explosions with them more often than not. He was also 8lbs 9 oz at birth ☺️

I'm doing laundry daily or at most every 2 days. I have a stash of 20 pocket diapers. You can't put the covers in the dryer so you also need to leave time for them to air dry (pockets dry faster than all in ones). You can't go more than 2 days without washing cloth due to the ammonia in the urine.

The laundry is not a big deal for me but I am struggling with diaper rash still. Im on my second detergent and she's still getting diaper rash after a few days of wear and we have to hop back to disposables. It's frustrating but I refuse to give up!

@Ceridwen77 - I've been putting babyganics cream on LO's butt pretty much every time I change him. This has been acting as a barrier so diaper rash doesn't keep popping up. We're having the same problem as you. The rest of his skin doesn't care what detergent we use but his butt sure does.

@Ceridwen77 That's weird, I've always thrown our pocket diaper covers into the dryer (on low heat). What brand do you have that says you can't do that?

Also good luck with the diaper rash

. I've had luck with using lanolin as a barrier ointment, and I have friends who use coconut oil. I had a friend who used tea tree oil and it worked wonders for her little one, but I can't remember if it is a preventative barrier or if it just fixed it after the fact.

Bumgenius. Everything I've read on the internet says drying them will ruin the elastic over time, so I don't want to risk it!

Thanks for the tip on the oil. And @rachswi I'll look into the cream - I think I have a sample. I also still need to try lanolin.

Honest diapers have worked really well for us. LO had grown out of Pamper swaddlers Newborn and the 1's were huge on him. Honest size 1s fit him perfectly, and we have stuck with them, as we never get blowouts.

We have DS in size 1 (he's about 10 lbs 9 oz) and they seem to be fitting him well, just a little big. But id rather him be in a bigger diaper than get diaper rash from the smaller diaper being too close to his skin.

We found he leaks with Huggies, but not pampers swaddlers. We also just started using Kirkland Supreme diapers from Costco, and they are working out great! It's $30 for a box of 192, so we're happy with ththe cost savings, as well.

@Ceridwen77 huh, I didn't know that! I've got mostly alva and fuzzibunz, and have used them for almost two years now. The elastic is still fine! (And some of them were hand-me-downs, that were used and washed in the same way for at least 3years before we got them!)

@Squirtgun @Ceridwen77 I've heard both that you can and can't dry cloth covers in the dryer. Just to be on the safe side I usually hang them in the house, but if I'm in a rush I put them in the dryer on the lowest temp. I heard it's because high heat ruins the waterproofing. They don't take too long to dry inside but I can't wait for warmer weather (we're in Colorado) so I can hang them outside, I've also heard the sun is the best for bleaching them clean.

Bridget had horrible diaper rash her second week home. Bordeaux's Butt Paste was amazing for us. You can also try letting her sit in a dry tub naked for about 10 - 30 minutes (or as long as it stays a dry tub) after wiping her clean. A little old lady I know told me the best cure for diaper rash is sunshine and she was 100% correct.

Our LO's all grow at different sizes. My DD2 is 11 weeks and about 13lbs and fitting into size 1 diapers. My DD1 was 7lbs at this point and just transitioning from preemie (though she was born full term) into NB diapers.
