Nasty cough, home remedies anyone?

I've had a really bad cough since before I got by bfp, it hasn't gotten any better with time and fluids. At my first appointment a week ago the mid wife said my lungs sounded "chunky" which would account for all of the crap I have been coughing up the last 2+ months. She told me which medicine I can take to clear it up but I want to avoid taking anything before 12-13 weeks and I don't want to chance this turning into bronchitis which would be so much harder to take care of without medication. Anyone have any home remedies that they have had success with?

Re: Nasty cough, home remedies anyone?

  • When I had a nasty cough and cold, I gargled with warm salt water and took Emergen-C a few times a day (in addition to Halls). I heard that honey helps but I did not try it. I know it sucks. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!

  • I've been drinking hot water with honey and orange slices. It's been really soothing...
  • Boil some water with a few pieces of ginger in it for 5 mins, then drink it (remove the ginger). It helps me a lot with a cough. You can add some honey too if you want it more sweet.

  • Miso soup is pretty magical. That might be worth a try. Maybe also some essential oils? There are great options for chest congestion.

  • Thank you all for the advice! Headed to the store now so I'll be picking up all of it, maybe I can knock it out with an army of everything.
  • This is going to sounds slightly insane, but my mom has been doing this with me since I was really little, and as an adult I can tell you that it definitely helps. Take cotton socks, get them dripping wet with cold (not freezing) water, ring them out and put them on. Put on another dry pair of socks (wool if you have) over the wet socks. Go to sleep. In the morning your feet will be dry and toasty warm and your symptoms should be reduced. Repeat as needed (one time per night). I hope you feel better soon!

  • :#@ducks6 (as I'm laying here wearing llama socks trying to warm up my frozen feet)- that sounds horrid and slightly stinky!! But if you swear it works... I'll take your word for it!
  • @ducks6 I have got to try that! It sounds so crazy that it might just work, I guess it's wet socks tonight!
  • Steam heels break up a lot of mucus and soothes a sore throat. You can simply boil a pot of water and breathe in the steam (careful not to get your face to close and burn yourself), or you can buy a personal steamer online or at Walmart/Target/etc. It works wonders! Tea can also help (just make sure it has little or no caffeine). There are a lot of respiratory tea options that can help. I've been dealing with a similar cough, and it's rough when you can't take anything for it. Feel better soon!
  • I take daily shots of apple cider vinegar and double up when I am sick. It helps me tremendously. If the taste is too strong you can mix a couple of tablespoons of it with honey and water in a glass. Also, if you make smoothies you can try adding turmeric to them. It's a bit spicy but a little goes a long way. I also enjoy Umcka Cold Care. But I think it's more preventative for on-coming symptoms and not for treatment of a full blown cold. Good luck! Get well soon!
