Maternity Clothes

I know that maternity clothes have come a long way in the last several years (thank goodness), but this is my first pregnancy and I am not familiar with maternity clothing stores. I am only in my 5th week so, I'm not in a rush to go on a shopping spree yet. I know Target has a good selection. What other stores are out there?

Re: Maternity Clothes

  • Motherhood Maternity.   I don't really plan on buying a lot of maternity clothes.  I will buy a few capris and shorts, maybe a pair of jeans. But for the most part I plan on wearing tank tops, when it gets warmer of course.  And I will just buy those a size up.

  • i bought some clothes from this site with my first pregnancy https://www.pinkblushmaternity.com/ they have really cute clothes...and are great for non-maternity.  All the "maternity" tops i bought I still wear, they are just more like tunics now.  You really don't need a lot of "maternity" clothes, a couple pair of bottoms and a few tops...you'll find most clothes stretch and still work with your baby bump

  • I bought all my maternity clothes from Target, Motherhood Maternity, and Macy's last time. I loaned them to SIL when she was pregnant, but should be able to reuse most of it (as well as borrow hers!) since my last was a Sept baby as well.

  • I didn't buy maternity clothes until it was absolutely necessary because they're so expensive. I bought a size or two larger than normal and supplemented with some burlington coat factory maternity clothes.

  • I'm really kicking myself for not saving any of my maternity clothes from 3 years ago, especially since I'm due just two weeks later than my daughter was. So, my first piece of advice is SAVE THEM! Even if you aren't sure you'll have another baby, pack them away just in case and you'll be so happy you did. I usually shop at Motherhood, Target and Old Navy. Being pregnant in the summer gives you more options that won't necessarily have to be maternity. Last time around I got away with a few maxi dresses and skirts that were stretchy enough to accommodate the bump, without being maternity. Yoga pants are my best friend, pregnant or not. Check local consignment shops and Facebook sale sites for some decent used items too, a lot of the stuff will end up being like brand new since it's only worn for a few months.
  • I haven't purchased anything yet as I'm not far enough along, but Old Navy is great. If you sign up for emails they constantly have alerts for 20-35% off, which is a big plus!
  • Last pregnancy I got most my maternity clothes at motherhood. I also got some stuff at Macy's which is fairly expensive but you can always wait for sales. I bought a few things at old navy and also online on Amazon.

  • I liked Macy's, target, kohls and old navy. I got the best sales at kohls and also did really good at cosignment stores.
  • I was a fan of the Motherhood line at Kohl's.  I also got a decent amount (especially casual pullovers and such) from Old Navy.  This time around I'm planning to buy some long sundresses in a larger size since they'll be OK for work in the summer.  (My last two pregnancies, I had spring babies.  So I'm totally off season this time around!)

  • @Flowr4246 I had a March baby, so all my maternity stuff is for the wrong season, too. Poor planning, I guess!

I bought most of my stuff from consignment stores, Old Navy, Motherhood Maternity, and Kohls. Then I discovered Zulily.com, too. Which has pretty decent sales sometimes. I was huge with my last pregnancy, so I couldn't get by using any of my regular clothes, stretchy or not. So I'm anticipating getting a few t-shirts and possibly a bathing suit to supplement this time around. Hopefully my body won't immediately go into baby bump mode... I'd just got back into all my clothes a month or two ago!
  • I did Pea in the Pod for one pair of really nice jeans. It's the only pair I had and I plan to use them again this time and let them be my only pair. Their stuff gets pricey. I also used Gap and Old Navy.

  • Get a bella band! Helps extend non-maternity clothes out longer. Good for post-partum too.

  • @Sbrown721 mumberry.com has a lot of really good yoga pants/tanks/work out tops that are pretty versatile and super cute. They also all have a built-in belly support band that helps lift your belly off of your back once you hit second tri! Some people even wear them post-partum!! Haha. They kinda grow with your bump :)
  • Kohls, sometimes you can find maternity pants at second hand stores. Old Navy is awesome. Ross or TJ Maxx.

Old Navy and target. I have one February baby and one April baby so I don't have any summer maternity clothes. Definitely going to need some. Sizing up in regular clothes would not work for me for the third trimester. XL maternity tops sometimes didn't cover my belly, and I wore Medium before that pregnancy.
  • I did a lot of hair elastic around the button/button hole of jeans for as long as I could, then used a band when that didn't work, then caved and got a few pairs of capris and jeans from Old Navy and Motherhood.  Bought a few maternity shirts as well, but for the most part wore tshirts a size larger than usual and always a cardigan.. though they wouldn't have been able to even come close to buttoning.

  • I was perusing ASOS and Loft, since I am petite. Will be buying as I get bigger though as not much abdomen growth at week seven.

Hit up the clearance rack at Motherhood Maternity today.  Still early, but we were at the mall and I wanted to see what they had and since everything on clearance was an extra 40% off (plus there was a tiered coupon in-store), I figured I may as well grab some things.

A few of the things I got (also got a couple of very comfy bralettes):

Thought about getting a few more things, but held back since most of the stuff wouldn't be seasonally appropriate once I actually need maternity clothes.

  • Burlington Coat Factory has pretty cute maternity clothes and VERY affordable. If you don't have an actual store in your area, you can shop on their website.
  • Old Navy has maternity clothes. Not all stores carry them, but they are on line as well. With most items you can return them to a store near you. If you don't have a store you can print a free label and ship them back right in the package they came in.
  • I bought basic things at Old Navy, Macys, Motherhood and Thyme (this is sold at Babies R us). Some clothes i borrowed from my SIL

  • I'm planning on reusing all of my maternity clothes as I was due in August last time, but I might get another pair of jeans and a couple t-shirts. Old navy jeans never fit me right, I don't know why I expected the maternity pants to be any different.

I think I might do a stitchfix box or get a few things from zulilly.

  • I loved Target for shirts and got a few pairs of basic jeans from A Pea in the Pod. It's a little pricier there, but those jeans (Luxe Essentials in particular) have held up through 3 pregnancies. It's embarrassing, but with some of the Target/Motherhood Maternity pants, I'd wind up with thinning or holes around the crotch area.

  • Anyone have any guidance for the maternity sizing? Do you just go with your normal size but in maternity sizing? How are you supposed to know how big your bump will be?

Yes - just go with your regular size. A lot of the clothes are so flowy or stretchy that they can accommodate bumps of different sizes. I also find a lot of maternity clothes are just S,M,L etc., not like dress sizes.

  • I was also curious about sizing. So those of you that are buying summer dresses now are just getting a S,M, L, etc based on what you are now? That is a pretty genius way to take advantage of sales! :)

  • I bought a lot of maternity clothes last time from Target, Old Navy, or local boutiques.  My favorite find was H&M.  They have really cute, on trend clothes, but also really well priced just like everything else at H&M.  I also bought myself a pair of my favorite non-maternity jeans (Joe's) from a Pea in a Pod.
In regards to sizing, I found that the first tri and most of the second tri I wore my regular size.  But by the end, oh girls, I was a couple sizes bigger than normal, even in stretchy maternity clothes.  Don't worry about the number, just buy what fits and keeps you comfortable.
In pants I found the "under the belly" style waistband to be most comfortable in the first half of the pregnancy, bc your belly isn't really big enough to fill out the "over the belly" style pants and they just sag off your butt.  But for the second half of the pregnancy I hated the under the belly style and only wore the over the belly style.  So just buy a few things that fit now, don't worry about building a whole wardrobe, because your sizes and the things you find comfortable will change as you grow.
I'm so thankful to be able to wear maxi dresses all summer when we are going to be at our biggest.  Doesn't get any more comfortable than a maxi dress, and we don't have to worry about sucking in!  Sept babies FTW!
  • also you can try some of the baby consignment stores... I know all the ones here have a small selection of maternity clothing as well. Lots of brand names at a fraction of the cost. And when you are all done with them you can sell them back to the store or get store credit to purchase things for baby. It's hit or miss sometimes but often times you still find items with original tags still on!

  • I loved Asos last time!

  • Since we have 5 weddings to go to this summer, I bought a few dresses @Motherhood on clearance (BOGO!) I have spring maternity clothes from my June babe, but not a lot of summer stuff.

  • What about JC Penney? I've seen maternity on the website but I haven't checked the store yet. Anyone know if they carry it?
Or what the quality is like?

  • I found a lot at Kohls but also have found some really nice maternity jeans at goodwill that were really inexpensive and from good brands like pea in the pod!
  • I'm plus size. I bought some maternity jeans from old navy and some motherhood short sleeved tops from eBay. I figure I can wear them with a cardigan until it gets warmer.

  • Old Navy and Kohl's (motherhood maternity brand is mostly what they carry) were my go-tos during my last two pregnancies. Both stores always have great sales and you don't have to break the bank like you do at the specialty stores.

Last pregnancy I bought a lot of tank tops and skirts from Old Navy, sadly I still love to wear my maternity tank tops because they are super long
