Teacher Advice on Leave

Hey Guys!

I tried searching to see if any other teachers on this board have really mentioned much about their maternity leave, and I can not seem to find much. I am really nervous about my leave because I am actually due BEFORE the school year starts. My EDD is August 12, but my school year always starts the Tuesday after Labor Day. There is just so much to be done in those two weeks before the year starts, like setting up my classroom. I have not told my boss I am pregnant yet, and I am not sure how to tackle the fact that I will be missing the very beginning of the school year. As any teacher knows these weeks are super crucial, especially with middle schoolers. I am kind of sad I may miss the first day of school too. This is my first pregnancy, so I am already crazy nervous to tell people I am pregnant let alone I am missing the first portion of the school year. Any advice in this situation?

Re: Teacher Advice on Leave

  • How long have you been with your district? Is your principal generally supportive? (Not that he or she will have much of a choice in your maternity leave dates.)

It will definitely be rough to miss the first weeks of the school year. If you can line up a long-term sub in advance, he or she might be able to come observe you teaching this semester in order to set similar expectations next year. You might also be able to find a retired teacher who is familiar with your content and grade level--you probably will still have to do a lot with norms and community building, but at least you won't be coming back to a class that's been floundering with an ill-prepared sub.

As far as getting your classroom prepped, do as much as you can at the end of this year. It might not be decorated or organized the way you would normally have it, but you can have the essentials ready. Things tend to get "lost" during maternity leave, so I would avoid leaving personal items or things you've invested a lot of your own money into. You can always set it up when you come back.

  • I have been with the district for four years, next year will be my fifth. My principal is great, but I don't work at the best school. I am already a bit worried about finding a long term sub. That's a great idea to have them come in at the end of the school year. I am just nervous because so much changes in those two months we are off at my school. We have a very high turnover rate. Thanks @skelly70 for the advice.

  • You're welcome.

We had a teacher out for first quarter this year, and they just decided to keep her sub on until semester and have her coach part-time second quarter. Perhaps you could do something similar--it would definitely be easier to come back at semester.
  • I am also a teacher with an administrative role. For my first pregnancy, I was due Sept 15, so I was there to begin the year. Still, I was only given six weeks off and a lot of pushback (because I teach an AP course). This time, I am due the first day of school, and I am sure that they will be upset. I just received a promotion, and I'm sure they'll feel frustrated that I'll now be gone during "busy season" aka the start of the year. I just have to keep reminding myself that whatever it is, they'll just have to work it out! I'll do my best to prepare over the summer. I also think that I'm only going to take off six weeks again.
  • Hi I'm a teacher in the UK and this is my 2nd baby. I'm confused, do you have to arrange you're own cover? And why do you only get 6 weeks off?! I will finish at the summer holidays but my school have already decided to get someone in for the last few weeks of term to "hand over" and I can take the full school year if I wish. In reality I may go back around May time. If that's the case they'll keep my cover to hand over again. Less disruptive for the students. As a pp says remove anything personal from your room as it's unlikely to be cared for the same in your absence. You need to focus on your new arrival, not your classroom!! Xx

I only have unpaid leave, and I know I am supposed to have everything ready for my sub. I believe it is up to 12 weeks but definitely unpaid. I think my school will help in finding me a long term sub, but I am supposed to have all the plans ready (from what I understand). I have seen other teachers leave with binders set up for their replacement. I am still not 100% how leave is handled. I am going off what I have seen/heard.

  • I also will probably miss the first days of school but Ive decided I just have to let it go. That's really hard for me, but I know I would rather spend that time with baby. Hopefully a retired teacher we all love will be able to do my 12 weeks, which is a huge relief since its hard to find a good sub for hs math. I know that its going to be tough when I go back though. Students and I starting over in November especially since he's a little more lenient than I am.

@Hammond142 Women don't get much for maternity leave over here. I'm guaranteed 12 weeks unpaid and I'm pretty sure I also have to have everything planned for the substitute. Super jealous of your situation!
  • I'm due the second day of school, so I definitely feel your anxiety. I teach high school science and I haven't found anyone to take my leave yet. Last baby, I was due in April so my 6 weeks ended in the summer. Our district allows 6 weeks off (at 60%) pay unless there is some extenuating circumstance that allows for an extension. I also haven't told my principal. I think he's more understanding than I give him credit for, but I teach upper level EOC courses that are important for his evaluation as well... so I've been too chicken to tell him just yet. Plus I'm only 10.5 weeks. Try not to stress!! I was so worried about it all when I had my first, and everything worked out in the end and I felt crazy for worrying so much!

  • Lurker here

I've been in this position 3 times (August 2010, August 2013, and August 2015). If you can start the school year I would just so you get set the tone for the year. My school has 1 week of in-service then the students start the following week.

    1) My first was born 8/3 and we went back 8/4 (week of in-service) so I didn't make to school at all.
    2) My 2nd was born Friday the first week students went back and I was at school until 10:30 that day when I got the call that we needed to induce (pre-e).
    3) With my 3rd (due 8/22) I hoping to have 2 weeks with the students aND wold hAve if id made ithe to my DD. I only made it 3 days, I went into labor after getting home from school on 8/12 and she was born the following day.

I worked up until labor for #2 and #3. I really felt those first few days, however brief were worth it. Just remember when you return that you'll have to treat it like the beginning of the year. Good luck!

  • I am due 7/26 but my daughter was a week late so I am guessing a birthday in August. We have in-service days the second week in August and start school on the 17th. I work at a private Catholic school so we can kind of do our own thing. I have taught K, 1, and now 3rd....I was told I can stay in 3rd next year or move to K if there are enough enrolled for three classes, which we won't know till the end of February.

I told my boss Friday and he is meeting with our super Tuesday to figure out my options etc. He is very supportive but it is his first year so he really isn't much help to me sorting all of this out. If I take the full 12 weeks FMLA then I would be out till the end of October. However, I know there are stipulations with that and sometimes you have to pay your full 100% insurance premium after you have used up the paid leave/sick days. I have no idea how much my premium is at 100% so don't even know if I could take the full 12 financially. My school gives 20 full paid days, then I think you have to take sick leave, then FMLA will cover up to a max total of 12 weeks. Of course I am a bit in the dark too, because the paperwork was SO wordy....I don't think I got it all.

As far as a sub goes....I would LOVE to have someone come in this spring and shadow for a bit, especially if I stay in 3rd. If I take the full 12 I will probably plan the first month and then let her take over when she has a feel for the class/schedule. I would also like a retired teacher or even a teacher who has graduated but doesn't have a full time position. I did a lot of long term subbing the year I didn't have a job. We will see.
  • I'm a college professor, starting at a new school, so FMLA doesn't apply. Baby is due Aug 4; professor orientation is Aug 18, and classes start Aug 22. I'm hoping baby comes early, because I technically don't have any leave.Luckily, as a prof, I may not have to teach every day. I'm really hoping to only teach 2 days a week at first, but I don't have my schedule yet.

  • Hi! I just wanted to offer up what I've learned. I'm an elementary school teacher at a public school district in NJ. Our benefits offer us to pay for our own additional disability insurance which will cover 6 weeks of pay (I believe 2/3 of my salary). Unfortunately this only kicks in after sick days have all been used. We also can use FMLA. Per my specific district, we are allowed to take the remainder of the year during which leave begins. I am due mid-August and plan to take all of next year. Most of it will be unpaid but my husband and I have been saving to allow for the single income. Definitely talk to your personnel department when you feel comfortable and look up your benefits with your particular district!
  • I'm not sure how widely used technology is in your school, but I would research recording some "flipped" lesson plan videos.  With a basic quiz or something at the end.  It would be a great way for your kids to "get to know you" and for the sub to see your style.  You could have things prepared and recorded before leave since you'll be doing the lesson plans anyways.

  • Depending on your district, you may be eligible for a year of sabbatical or unpaid leave without breaking your employment. I teach high school, and am taking a year off, unpaid. This lets me not break my employment with my district, allowing me to maintain my seniority. If your financial situation allows it, this may be a good option.
  • I'm in the very same situation- dates and all. I missed the first two weeks of this year for a surgery and it was stressful. I'm also worried because my school is moving over the summer. I really hope that my new room will be set up over the summer so I can get in. That causes me more anxiety than missing the first few weeks with students. I feel like whenever I get back into the classroom that will be our "September" and we will redo policies and procedures then.
  • @asponaug Have you talked to your admin yet? I have a meeting set for Friday, and I am so crazy nervous.

  • @LadyBear10 I haven't yet. I'm not really looking forward to it. Good luck! Let us know how it goes!!
  • My best friend and 2nd grade teammate just went through this. She had her first baby on August 5th and didn't return until the 1st week of November. Her binder consisted of procedures for everything and a lot of just general information. As far as lesson planning went, her and I planned out the first few weeks in great detail and then it was just understood that the substitute would meet with myself and our other two teammates for our weekly plan time and do the planning as well, so I wouldn't stress too much. I am going to be in the same boat this year with having a c-section August 15th. My due date is the first day of school. I'm not thrilled about missing the beginning of the year ( we did everything to try for a May due date )  but of course babies have their own plan lol : this is my second baby. I just know from my teammates experience that no matter how well you plan things out your sub is going to be different from you and when you get back you will have to sort of "fix" things if you are type A, as most teachers as well as myself are. Her kids seemed way behind the other second grade classes, but her sub was fresh out of college with this being her first true classroom experience, so it was kind of expected. She also did not have a say in who her sub was. Hope this helps!

  • I am due Aug. 14 and teacher workdays start the 17th. I will be in my same room next year so I plan to just redecorate and cover my bulletin boards with butcher paper. I obviously won't have rosters but plan to leave a binder with plans for the first quarter and all the materials needed for the 8 weeks I presume I'll be out (first was a c-section, so....). As far as leave time your district should let you use any sick leave or personal leave accrued before you go without pay. Some districts will let you borrow leave for time your leave doesn't cover, and last time I got enough to cover all 8 weeks. I asked for days instead of gifts at my school shower.
  • I'm in the same boat- middle school science teacher at a Catholic private school. Baby's due date is August 19 and our in-service is the following week so I will not be there for the start of the school year. That has me so worried, setting the tone for the year is crucial. Hopefully will be able to hire a long term sub for me and I plan on meeting regularly to keep in the loop. I haven't told many people at work yet, I'm 11 weeks and barely showing, so no one is asking questions.

I will tell my boss after we have our first ultrasound at 12.5 weeks and everything is OK. I know I have to use my sick and personal days for leave and when they're gone, they're gone. I believe the rest is unpaid. I hope to have enough to cover 12 weeks and come back around Halloween at the end of the 1st quarter. I will update more after I tell my boss for some more insight.
  • I am a teacher and I told my principal and the special education supervisor at 8 weeks. I am due August 15th and I will totally be missing the beginning of the school year. At this point I have set my date back as October 11th. I am worried about my students because I work with kids with autism and change does not go over well for them. I have not told my students or their parents at this point. Once we determine who is going to take over my classroom, hopefully one of my paraprofessionals, we will let families know. I am getting 6 weeks paid, but I have to use my sick time.
