Paragard IUD - period after insertion?

Hey ladies,

So I had my paragard put in two days ago - since then I've been bleeding pretty heavily and cramping.  The cramps I know are normal but I'm a little concerned about the bleeding.

I hadn't gotten my period after baby yet and I am NOT breastfeeding - nurse thought it was a little strange that I hadn't gotten it yet so she made me take a pregnancy test.  I'm not pregnant.

I asked the doctor if the IUD insertion would bring on my period - she said no but I'm bleeding so heavily I really think this is my period?  I've called and left a message for her but I've been googling/searching the internet and I can't find anything.

So I come to you ladies - anyone with an IUD bleed heavily for days after insertion or have gotten their period from insertion?  I'm a little concerned but I really think it's my period...

Re: Paragard IUD - period after insertion?

  • I had my IUD placed 10 weeks PP and got (what I think is) my first period 5 days later. (I was not breastfeeding.) And I still have it, going on 4 weeks now. The reason I think it's my period is because there was no bleeding immediately following the IUD, plus it is heavier, not spotting. (The doc did say that some women can spot for a month following their IUD and it is totally normal.)

Anyway, I did read that your first PP period can last a lot longer than your normal period, but I'm starting to get concerned because it's been so long. If it doesn't stop this week I'm going to call the doctor.

  • I had one put in a couple days ago (Thursday) and had some bleeding that day, but nothing since. I do breastfeed though so I'm not sure.
  • I got mine put in at 6 weeks pp and I started bleeding 2 days later. It lasted five weeks. My doctor said it was fine and that if I was still bleeding at 12 weeks(!!!) after having it put in we could talk about removing it. I did not get the paragaurd because it makes bleeding heavier and cramps worse.
  • It's pretty normal to spot after iud insertion, but bleeding heavily seems strange. This is my second mirena and I've been spitting since insertion (almost 5 weeks ago), but it's like a little brown discharge when I wipe- not even enough to wear a tampon.

I had heavy "spotting" after insertion. Even though I bf my OB said my lining was beginning to thicken (ie i was going to be starting my period sometime in the near future) and the iud works in part by irritating the lining of the uterus. Thus I had bleeding similar to what I would have had later in the month.
  • I was on my period when I had Mirena placed (14w PP), it ended a couple of days later. A week after, I started bleeding like a light period. Called the doc's office and they said it wasn't unusual - expect abnormal bleeding/spotting for 3-6 months. If you're soaking through pads/tampons or have severe cramping that's definitely something to be worried about.
