GERD

My poor baby is choking/gagging and vomiting more often than not throughout the day. At his two weeks appointment I mentioned his symptoms to his pediatrician and also informed her that my dad had very bad GERD and my baby's dad also experiences pretty bad acid reflux. At the time his symptoms weren't terrible, I just noticed he had trouble swallowing and shortly after feedings he would start to cough or gag.

Today has been really bad and it continues to worry me more and more. This morning he vomited like an adult would and puked out what I'm guessing was everything his little tummy could hold. My whole stomach had vomit, his pajamas, the couch and his blanket. It really hurt him to puke that hard and he was completely limp afterward.

Does anyone else's infant experience this? I'm doing everything she told me to do. Elevate him 24/7. Burp every 5 minutes during feeds, keep him up right for 30 minutes after feeds. It seems worse not better :( and it's very scary.

Re: GERD

  • I would contact the pediatrician again and talk about trying medication like Zantac. My LO had some coughing/gagging going on, which turned out to be related to a cold she had, but the doctor said that if it continued we could try Zantac to see if it helped. It's not uncommon for babies to have reflux issues -- some have it worse than others. I totally understand how scary it is to see your baby coughing and having trouble!

  • No experience with baby having it but I do and it's definitely a pain. Hope your LO feels better soon!
  • My baby has a cleft and its very common for them to have GERD. What my pediatrician told me to look out for was arching of the back, crying and pain when they spit up. She also mention spitting up more than 6 times a day. I would definitely talk to your pediatrician if you think your baby has it, especially if it's affecting wieght gain. Another thing you can do is add cereal to your baby's milk but I would ask your pediatrician first.
  • I had a problem with that with my LO and I talked to her pediatrian and she suggested adding Enfamil AR to her breast milk it's for spit up babies and it has helped tremendously. I mix 2oz of formula with 2oz of breast milk and she is doing much better. She is also burping better too! Hope you figure something out soon that helps your LO!
  • I'd take LO back to the pediatrician. There is a difference between a baby spitting up and throwing up (as you mentioned).

Any time a baby is "limp" or has a fever 100.4 or greater (up to 6 weeks), or greater than 101 after 6 weeks I was told they need to be seen in the emergency room or by a pediatrician ASAP.
  • ask your pediatrician about Zantac. My baby boy has it and the Zantac has helped him a whole lot so far.
  • Alyssa82511, how long did it take for Zantac to kick in?
  • It was pretty much immediate. He was a lot more calm like the same night I gave it to him.
