STM+ Bottle Preference

To all of the lovely STM+ on this board I have a question about which bottles you like (if you used them).

As a FTM here is my plan (HAHHAA funny I know!): I would like to breastfeed baby and also supplement with formula 1x/day. I want my husband to do one feeding during the night, and I also want baby to be used to using a bottle for all of the times he/she will be watched by someone else. We have a ton of weddings, etc. before baby turns 6 months so being EBF isn't an option.

I've obviously never BF before but as a previous postpartum nurse I am relatively familiar. The one thing I am nervous about is that I have short nipples so I want a bottle that reflects that.

I've researched on my own, but I want some advice from real people who may have experienced this!

I did BF and supplementing at night for the first 3 months with dd.

I like the playtex ventair ones. And the playtex drop ins for travel (they use the same nipples.) I've used them with both kids so far, and they are really easy to wash, use, and they don't leak. Both kids had no problem, and dd switched back and forth between bottle and breast from day one (don't know if the bottle had anything to do with that or not).

I breastfed and worked FT so my son had bottles during the weekdays. We like the dr Browns bottles. They really helped with DS's reflux. I also used a NB nipple for him until he was 6 months old because breastfed babies are used to a slower flowing nipple (moms).

Also, your nipples may elongate once you guys get into the swing of things. Mine did!

You can use breastmilk in bottles, too. I pumped and had H give a bottle of breastmilk every night so I got a longer chunk of sleep. EBF means baby only gets breastmilk, not that baby only nurses.

As to your question, we used Dr Browns but H hated cleaning them so we are going to avoid them this time if possible.

Good to know! I def want to pump to try to do breastmilk in bottles- just don't want to set myself up for disappointment if it doesn't work.

One thing I have learned from STM is not to have too specific of expectations so you don't get down on yourself if you don't meet them!

One thing I have learned from STM is not to have too specific of expectations so you don't get down on yourself if you don't meet them!

We used breast milk in bottles. When I stopped breastfeeding him at 8 months and went to formula I was appalled at how expensive even the parents choice brand is!

Also - for you formula FTMs - formula is like prescription medication. Once the patent runs out, generic brands are made that are identical to the name brand. If you look at similac and parents choice (or any other generic formula brand) side by side, they are identical. So buy the "cheap" formula!

We just liked the plain old Medela ones. You can definitely try pumping first before going straight to formula and see how that works for you. I went back to work at 12 weeks and traveled a ton without the baby and was lucky enough to give him breastmilk bottles. I know it won't work for everyone, but don't throw in the towel before you've even started! Also, I would recommend not stocking up on one type of bottle at the beginning, see what he/she prefers first, you may have to go through a few.

I started out using the agent natural bottles with dd and she hated them. She always gagged and coughed when we tried to feed her so we switched to the Playtex drop ins and never looked back. We will be using the playtex ones again this time.

Eta: the best part of the Playtex drop ins is that they are so incredibly easy to clean.

Personally we used dr. Browns for our girls, and since I still have them I will be using them again. They came highly recommended for preemies by several nurses, and worked really well for my tiny tiny babies.

Obviously I hope no one has a preemie, but if they do, dr browns are wonderful!

It is very baby-dependent. With DD1, she only liked the Playtex bottles with the drop-in liners. With DD2, she absolutely would not take any bottle (we tried over 20 brands) until she turned 6 months old. She would just not eat if I wasn't there, and then nurse like crazy when I got home. When she finally would accept one, it was just the plain Medela bottles that came with my pump.

Thanks everyone! I was working on my registry (we have 2.5 feet of snow!) and wanted to see what everyone thought.

I guess a good pump and not ordering too many of any one bottle is the key- wouldn't want 16 of the same bottle that LO doesn't like!
