I couldn't wait so it was definitely worth it! I found out at 16weeks and I've had 2 anatomy scans confirming that! Most places are very good at what they do, so if you want to know I say go ahead. This is my 1st baby so I'm extremely impatient.
We had a 4D scan done at 17 weeks and it was very worth it to us. Our AS was scheduled for 21 weeks and it was up in the air whether or not SO was getting sent away for extended training during that time. It was also a big possibility he would get deployed sometime around when our baby was due, thankfully things settled down in that area and they did not go. However, if he had been sent away and missed all of the big appointments and the birth, he wouldn't have met his son until around his first birthday. If that were to happen he at least had the experience of seeing his son in real time at least once and got to be a part of something with the pregnancy. It wasn't just for funsies for him. If we have another child and SO is out of the military we won't bother getting another elective. It really all depends on why you want one.

I'm doing my scan between 16+2 & 16+6 weeks. Why, because I want to and I can. I've spent $60 so much more foolishly before. And everyone saying is stupid or you lack patience... Yeah, this is at least one time in life where you can do what you want when you want because it's your body. Patience or not, if your excited, it's worth it.

It's just the anatomy scan. It is not to determine the sex of your baby.

Just to add on please don't count this as the anatomy scan unless it was done at your dr's office it is a very in depth u/s to make sure all of the organs are developing properly and while boutique shops May have good techs hey are not allowed to share medical issues with you and may send results to your dr may not. So make sure you still have one at 20 weeks at the dr's office and not much earlier then that.
@sarahufl and @Lindsayleigh1989 it seems like you guys are contradicting each other? Regardless I think its clear based on the board topic that I went solely to determine if I was having a girl or a boy.
Having had the ultrasound done...they make it very clear that this is not a medical ultrasound and purely frivolous. Hopefully everyone at that point would know that they should absolutely continue with medical scans at their doctor's office to determine things are progressing/measuring and that baby is healthy. In my state this outside clinic is required by law to share results with my doctor if they were less than typical and we had to sign a waiver for that and include doctor information. YMMV as I am sure that is a state by state thing.
@theshannondee no worries I think she was trying to clarify the term but glad to know you are still doing the dr one! I'm totally cool with people doing boutique u/s I probably would to if we had a place that didn't charge an insane amount of money! Like 200 dollars for 20 minutes.
Some people I'm finding don't know there is a difference in the scans
I caved. My husband has been so disappointed since not finding out at my last appointment, and his birthday is next Monday. I scheduled an elective scan for next Sunday (that he doesn't know about yet) as an early birthday gift so he can see our baby (we haven't had an ultrasound since 61/2 weeks) and - fingers crossed - find out what we are naming our little one. It will cost me about $45 dollars, and if it makes my husband's birthday, it's absolutely worth it.

So, I scheduled the early gender screening as well. Its costing us 50.00 extra and its at my OB office. To me personally its worth it I think because I have been a nervous wreck after miscarrying a few years ago. Any chance I get to see LO I will take it. I think the standard is every 4 weeks anyways. I have gotten this far and can't wait to know if my baby is a girl or a boy that I am carrying and give he/she a name. When we do the anatomy scan at 20 weeks we will then have a gender reveal party for friends and family Given the option to find out early I think is nice and gives piece of mind.

The only reveal party I've ever been to the MTB knew beforehand what she was having. We walked in and everything was decorated blue. Later, she opened a box and let out some pink balloons and she just looked so smug the whole time. It wasn't fun at all. The fun is seeing the reaction of the new parents. Why don't people understand this?

Exactly. Like, I'm happy for you getting what you're getting, but it doesn't matter to me one way or another I just want to see your excitement. She's pregnant again so it'll be interesting to see if she does another reveal. I'll not be going if she does.

This. If I found out that parents-to-be knew about the sex beforehand, I would hardcore side-eye them and then wondered what the hell I was doing there. Part of the fun of a sex reveal party (well....if you want to consider them fun...) is seeing the parents reaction when they are finding out. Seeing their reaction, and food....thats it. If the parents know, I wouldn't waste my time going, and would just see the baby once it was actually born.
My friend did one where she knew, but DH didn't. It was really fun to see his reaction, but she didn't make a big deal about knowing ahead of time so it wasn't awkward. I bet some guests didn't even know she knew.

@LinzerBinzer No, nobody said anything to her. She was born with a pretty severe cleft lip and palate and her parents felt guilty about it so they've always basically let her do whatever she wants. She has a grand sense of entitlement.

I went to the boutique at 16 w1d I have know for two weeks now that I am having a girl and I don't regret it one bit. I would have actually paid double to find out I'm impatient and extremely excited about this pregnancy so why not find out?? Ps you can always ask how sure they are and have them explain to you why they think the baby is a boy or a girl. I asked the guy doing ours and he said he was 150% sure and explained why and then showed the babies "parts" from a bunch of different angles so I could understand for myself
I have my own reasons for wanting this done and don't mind paying the money. My doctors office actually offers it. I just wanted opinions of expectant mothers. We have a son already but never had an early scan and that is why I am curious. We already love the baby just the same without knowing the gender, that won't change. Just wanted to do something FUN after all the testing that I have had already. (confirming that baby is healthy) if something was wrong I trust my doctor to tell me. I believe in God and have faith that everything is as it is supposed to be. Thanks for the input ladies! God Bless!
Wait, you've had genetic testing? Then you don't need an elective scan for gender identification. Your doctor should already know.
That's not necessarily true. I had genetic testing done at 12 weeks and gender was not included in the testing.

I guess I'm just confused as to why genetic testing would check fetal dna for chromosomal abnormalities and not check for aneuploidy in the sex chromosomes, meaning they'd be checked and known as well.
For the test I did, it only focused on the abnormalities. They didn't even give the option of checking for the sex. So I suppose it would show up, but it was not something that was reported/checked on.
I wonder if this was a quad test which wouldn't check for gender
I can tell you during my last pregnancy they did a gender scan at 17 weeks at our doctors office and told us they were very confident in their assessment. So we did our gender reveal a week later. But then at the 20 week anatomy scan we found out they were wrong. I'll just be waiting for the anatomy scan this time.
For me it wasn't really worth it, because at a 12 week doctors office scan she said she thought it was a girl... I wasn't expecting any sort of guess this early. Then I had the elective one at 14 weeks (it was already scheduled), and she said girl again. But I basically was told the same best-guess for free at my previous sonogram so yeah, not really worth it. (anatomy scan confirmed she's a girl)

I wouldn't trust any professional who told me they were "150% sure" of anything ... As that is impossible. It reminds me of the people on Maury who are 1000% sure he is / is not the father.
