Currently being induced

I went in earlier today for my 38wk appointment and my blood pressure was unusually high. After being monitored in triage for several hours and medication to lower it, the dr said it'd be best to induce labor. My original birth plan was to do a natural unmediated Bradley method birth but I'm not sure if any of that will be a reality now. Any advice from someone who's gone through this? How long it will take? I'm a first time mom and I'm laying on this bed still trying to process what's happening.

Re: Currently being induced

  • Just been through it this week. Are they putting you on magnesium? That stuff is a little rough, I felt like my body was on fire for a while.
There is no way to say how long it will take, your body has to prep it's self by your cervix thinning out and you dialating.
Make sure if you don't feel right after they give you a med that you tell them.
Mine took about 24hrs and I had some complications, without those it could have gone faster.
Deep breaths Mama, you got this! Good luck! Oh and the relaxation concepts of Bradely are still totally doable.

  • No experience with this cause I'm a FTM but wanted to say good luck! You got this! You will be holding your little one soon :)
  • I was put on pitocin with my second and third baby. I was in labor give or take 2 hours. But I was already past my EDD. It really does just depend on your body. Congrats on having your baby soon.
  • good luck and lots of deep breaths! you will be awesome   :)
  • Best of luck! Hope to see baby soon!
  • Good luck! Baby will be here before you know it!
  • You can do this! Thinking of you mama!
  • Good luck with your induction!!!

With my last pregnancy, I was induced directly from my 36 week appointment for low amniotic fluid.  They used a foley bulb overnight to try to dilate me.  that got me to 3cm.  Then, Pitocin and they broke my water in the morning.  That got me to 5cm.  Then, I stalled.  From 10am-10pm, I had strong regular contractions but no more dilation.  In the last 2 hours of the evening, they tried a bunch of other things like narcotics, an epidural, and turning off and back on the Pitocin.  In the end, nothing worked and I ended up with a C-Section.  I hope your body responds well to the induction.  You are 2 weeks further along than I was, so maybe your body is more ready than mine was.

  • I'm in the same boat. Will be 38 weeks on Saturday and they just started my induction due to high BP and some protein in my urine. I was induced at 39 weeks with my first for low amniotic fluid. That time they started at 6pm and I delivered at 2pm the next day.
Now it's just a waiting game. Here's to us both having easy quick deliveries and healthy babies!
  • You can do it! With my first my water broke on its own, but I wasn't progressing, so I had pitocin to help induce labor. I made it without the epidural and only had a dose or two of pain meds. If I had been more focused I could have done without the pain med.

  • My BP has been high my last two appointments and Doctor sent me for blood work and a 24 hour urine test- I have to fill some jugs with urine all weekend.... Ugh! Then she will re check my BP on Tuesday and may do an induction that day or an induction the following Sunday. I left my appointment feeling all sorts of confused! I was hoping to let my body go into labor on its own, but it appears that might not happen now.
  • I was induced with my second LO and labor later around 7 hours with 15 min of pushing. Best advice is to try to relax and move around as much as you can (which you can't do if you have an epidural). I definitely think moving around and changing positions can help shorten labor. Especially since inductions usually last longer than spontaneous labors.
  • My water broke with my first but I didn't have contractions for twelve hours so they started me on pitocin to induce. I was able to avoid pain meds so it's possible if it is what you want! Baby was born about five hours after pitocin started. Good luck! How exciting you'll soon have your little one in your arms!
  • You can do it! Hang in there! Just surrender to what is happening, this whole labor thing was going to be beyond your control anyway. Practice your techniques, you can still apply everything you've learned. Soon you'll have your baby! Sending positive thoughts your way!
  • The same thing happened to me last week at 37 weeks. I was induced Sunday night at 6 with cervadil. Monday morning they removed it and I was 80% effaced and 2 cm dilated. They started pitocin at 8 Monday morning. I received the epidural at one and was 3 cm dilated 90% effaced at 4:00 I started feeling pressure and when the nurse checked me, my water had broke and I had my bloody show, she checked me and I was fully dilated and ready to push. I started pushing at 4:30 and she was born at 5 pm Monday.

I know it's scary, but don't worry you got this! Congratulations!!
  • You got this! I'm being induced as a FTM on the 11th, I'm scared out of my mind but sooo ready to meet my little baby boy. Your stories are helping me.
  • No way to know how long it will take. Best of luck and congrats on your soon to be LO!

  • With my first I was put on pitocin at 3pm and by 6pm contractions shot thru the roof and received my epidural, by 3am I was pushing and by 3:41 my son was born. Now I hear from nurses I was lucky bc the process is sometimes longer. Second child, I dilated 1to 3 really quick but stopped so decided to give me pitocin which responded really quick and I just delivered my son yesterday afternoon at 37 weeks but since my kids are 16 months apart everything is still fresh and that while process took 7 hrs with only 3 pushes to get the second one out. Hang in there, when you feel pressure in your butt you are ready to push.
