Switching formula brand/type

Bubba has been spitting up/vomiting almost regularly at this point along with persistent gas/bowel issues. He'll be backed up for almost a day and a half crying and straining before anything happens in one shot and the cycle restarts. He is clearly suffering :\

Anyway we've been using Enfamil newborn and were thinking of either switching to Similac or a different type of Enfamil. I called our doc but he's out of town (...hah) and waiting til Eli's appt on the 13th would be torture.

Anyway! Anyone know if we should ween him off of the current formula into the next (kinda like a cat, mixing it together before switching fully) or just full stop give him a bottle of New stuff?

Suggestions appreciated !!

  • Some suggestions before you switch.
Our DD spits up, we switched her to a new bottle with premie nipple. Maybe the flow is to fast? Is he burping well after every ounce or so?

  • I was going to post a similar thread to this, so I'm glad you did! My LO has gas and possible reflux, and I supplement BFing with 1-2 bottles of formula per day (and I pump on those off sessions) -- am wondering if it's the formula I'm using (Similac Sensitive) so I want to try a different one. I've read Gerber Gentle (or something like that) is good, but I'm worried about the transition too. I'm hoping since I do minimal formula use right now, that I can just switch right over with no issues. Maybe that's naive of me?!

  • You can switch cold turkey and you should notice a difference within 24-48 hours if it was the formula causing problems. Mine had really stinky gas on Similac advance, switched to Similac Sensitive (orange container) and noticed an immediate difference. We also switched bottles about a week later b/c he had a tough time latching the Dr. Browns premie nipples, and was swallowing a lot of air. He does much better latching onto Tommee Tippee, though the flow is too fast so I have to tilt the bottle just right to slow down his feedings. When you are having feeding issues a lot is trial and error at first.
  • I've noticed he guzzles his meals so maybe that has a lot to do with part of it (all that air) I'll look into other nipples. I'm thinking of switching to Enfamil A.R. I'll let you ladies know how it goes lol

    Thanks for everything !
  • We are supplementing 1-2 bottles a day with formula and just switched from enfamil newborn to Gerber good start soothe. So very similar to you @esscapelle. We switched cold turkey because we were out of the enfamil and he is doing much better on the Gerber. Less gas and less spitting up.

  • My babe is having so many poop issues, she did the same with breast milk but was actually able to get it out at least 2x a day.. Now strictly on formula I dried my milk up... I have her on similac sensitive, and she strains and strains and pushes her hardest following with screaming her lungs out.. Shes mainly is just farting. She's lucky to poop once a day, also it's very dark green. I'm thinking about trying her on the total comfort by similac I've heard great things about that. I just want her tummy to feel better. :( I've been giving her prune or apple juice w some water (advised by her pediatrician)
  • We are supplementing with ready to feed similac sensitive. It's what we were given in the hospital when I was having issues and DD has taken well to it. I have read that the ready to feed is easier on their tummy's than the powder formula. The only downside is it's pricier. Try using a slow flow nipple. DD uses preemie nipples and loves it. The next size up is too fast for her and causes her to spit up.
  • Does lactose intolerance run in your family? I had similar problems when my mom switched me over to formula and that is when we found out I was lactose intolerant. Most formulas have some sort of cows milk in them. I had to have a soy only formula as a baby. May be something to keep in mind or ask your pediatrician about just to make sure.

  • My son was having the worse gas issues so we switched him to enfamil gentlease and switched to dr Browns bottles. This has helped so much. I think it is mostly better because of the dr Browns bottles.
  • We tried the Enfamil AR the last two days with horrific results. Eli was still spitting up an insane amount but it was curdled looking and phlegmy. He also had an increase in abdominal straining. Poor thing was just suffering.

Switched to gentlease today and looking into the nipples.
  • @LeggoxMyxPreggo how did your LO do on the gentlease? DD is currently on the enfamil newborn but am thinking of switching to the gentlease due to some gas issues the past week or so.

  • We started Enfamil AR yesterday and at first he was still spitting up and it was the curdled looking stuff, but he seems to have gotten used to it now and no more big spitups today, at least. I also moved up from a size 0 to size 1 nipple for the AR formula to make it a little easier to get out.

Before this, we moved him down from size 1 to size 0 because he was eating too fast and getting it everywhere.

    We use Avent Naturals bottles.

He he has some potty issues, too, but not sure if they are different yet with the different formula. I use gripe water when he seems to be too gassy and uncomfortable.

Not well to be honest. It had the same affect as the newborn. I'm now using Gerber good start gentle and I'm seeing better results. He doesn't spit up nearly as much so he's not ravenous when the 3 hour mark comes around and eats slower. I've been using gripe water to help ease transition. Hopefully this will be the last one lol
  • Soy formula was our.life saver after trying to types. Maybe worth a shot
