Reflux

I've read all the posts on here about your babies with reflux and wanted to do an update on how they all are! My son has really bad reflux, to the point where he vomits all day long. I feed him and he immediately throws up when he's done eating then continues to throw up for several hours (till his next feeding) then it just starts all over. I'm wondering if you all have tried anything that has helped. Our doctor just keeps switching his medication and recently has given us Nexium and it's not recommended for children under the age of 12... I just want to find something that will ease the spitting up. Any help?

Re: Reflux

  • My lo has reflux and has been on Zantac twice a day for it since he was two weeks old. He is also formula fed and we have him on Similac Sensitive for Spit up which has added rice starch and I think being on that has helped a ton since it is thicker. I always make sure to feed him in an upright position and burp him quite often. With the Zantac and the formula he doesn't seem to have anymore discomfort and is doing really well. With my first child, he had really bad reflux and had to be put on two different medications for it, Zantac and Prevacid, it wasn't until they did that, that we started seeing a huge difference. He did eventually grow out of it around a year old and no longer needed any of the medication.

  • We have been dealing with constant spit up since day 1. Took 10 weeks for them to finally give him Zantac which only improved him slightly. We recently switched to Dr Brown bottles and have seen an incredible reduction in the amount of spit up. He still spits up a little after a bottle but not the all day soaking throw up like before. We are giving him a week with the bottle change and then deciding if we want to try enfamil AR instead of just newborn. We also keep him at a 45 degree angle for as long as possible after each feeding. Fortunately our little guy isn't uncomfortable he just is always spitting up. Hope you find something that helps.
  • My son has acid reflux as well. We tried zantec but he wouldn't take it because of the flavor so his pediatrician switched him to prilosec, He told us that the medication wouldn't decrease the volume or frequency of spit ups at all. Just helps to give the baby relief from the acidity of the spit up.

side note: if you are breastfeeding you could try cutting all dairy out of your diet. He could also have a milk protein allergy.
  • I have been dealing with the same thing. Baby is almost 4 months old and was finally able to get him on zantac and I actually think it made the spit up worse. I resorted to putting a tablespoon of rice cereal in almost every 4 ounce bottle and that seems to help a lot. I also keep him upright for at least 20 minutes after every feeding and Burb him frequently during each feeding.

Milk protien allergy causes blood in the stool not acid reflux. A lot of babies have both, but one isn't a symptom of the other. Please don't just remove dairy as it's part of a balanced diet for many nursing mothers. Also, it's unlikely you'll remove all trace dairy without a little education on what to look for... I had a prescription with dairy! If you suspect a food allergy always see your pediatrician right away.
  • My baby has both. The milk protein allergy causes mucous and blood in stools and slows growth.

  • My baby has severe reflux with a milk protein intolerance. He was put on dairy free formula by a pediatrician after weeks of trying reflux meds. He never had any blood in his stools (or at least it was unable to be seen). I know it's always best to see a professional but just thought I'd mention my boy only had symptoms of reflux but is 100x better having gone dairy free.

Most of the time it's not visible to the naked eye, but with an allergy it is always there. They do a simple test in the office. My daughter has both food allergies and reflux.
  • I don't think it's a milk protein allergy because he's been on soy formula and still spit it up and now he's on alimentum which is soy and milk free and still spits that up like crazy!

Soy and milk proteins are similar, so many kids d don't tolerate either. Also, alimentum makes some allergic babies worse. Its not soy and dairy free, but it's hydorlized so some babies don't recognize it as soy or dairy.

It doesn't sound to me like an allergy, but you should still talk with the pediatrician.
  • My pediatrician sent us to a specialist
  • DS has reflux and had been on zantac since he was 3 weeks old, 15 weeks now. You will need to constantly change the dosage as they gain weight, otherwise, it's not effective. So far, he spits up, but it doesn't cause him pain.

I EBF and took dairy and limited it and not a change.

I've also tried a like rice cereal and that didn't really help.

But as long as the zantac keeps him comfy, we're good for now.
