1st Trimester

HCG Concern, spotting, symptoms...

Hi everyone,

I haven't introduced myself this pregnancy but, I'm Eileen, and I'm (hopefully still) 7w 1d pregnant.

I felt like death last weekend and could hardly leave the couch. This was after a very long week at work and I over did it Saturday morning. Monday I started having scant brown spotting. It has continued all week but never very much. My OB's nurses contribute it to cervical irritation and I think I agree and am becoming less freaked out by it. They said I could come in for a 48 hour blood test to ease my mind. So, I did.

Tuesday, at 6w 4d my HCG was 52,000. The nurse who called was very excited about this number, saying it was very good but we would still do a second test to see growth. On Thursday, at 6w 6d, my blood came back at 64,000. My doc was apparently not excited about this number saying she wanted me to come in for a viability US because the number didn't double...

I think she's nuts (or at least I'm hoping). Everything I read says it stops doubling after 1200 and after 6000 it takes more than 4 days to double.

Concerning me on top of that is that, after Monday, I stopped feeling like death and started feeling pretty good. Still tired, still sore boobs on and off, still some nausea when hungry or when I eat too much, but nothing like over the weekend.

This is long, I know, but I just had to get my story and thoughts out especially because we haven't told anyone about the pregnancy so, I have no one to consult with and compare notes.

Thanks!

  • Symptoms mean nothing for the health of any pregnancy. If your doctor thinks you should have an ultrasound then I would do it.

  • You're right hcg stops doubling ever 48 hours after a certain point and like pp said symptoms in no way indicate if your pregnancy is viable or not. Earlier this year I lost a baby at 8 weeks and had no idea until 11 weeks. I was still really sick and throwing up everyday. This pregnacy I've been sick like I was last time but I'm at 17 weeks now. Symptoms will always change. Don't put stock in symptoms. If your doctor wants you to get an ultrasound then go get an ultrasound.
  • Oh, I'm definitely having the US. It is scheduled for Monday afternoon.
  • Agreed with PP, doubling rate slows after awhile, a quick Google search should find the HCG ranges that are normal for each week and you can see that doubling where you're at just isn't going to happen. You aren't the first I've seen with a similar issue with doctors/nurses expecting doubling later on, so try not to stress.

I had symptoms come and go early on, it freaked me out too but they always managed to find their way back.

Hopefully the ultrasound gives you some peace of mind.
  • I would be looking for a new doctor. Hope the us goes well!
