who else has not been drinking prenatals?

Im a first time mom and i had the worst of the WORST morning sickness i lost weight my first trimester it was so hard to enjoy me being pregnant, I tried taking prenatals but i would vomit right after, i tried taking them at night and i would have horrible nightmares every single time i took my prenatals before bed. They even made my constipation worse lol!!! So i just stopped taking them for good im 34 weeks and i feel so bad for not taking them i just cant, im worried but i want to know im i the only one who cant seem to handle prenatals?

Re: who else has not been drinking prenatals?

  • How are you 34 weeks and posting in May 2016? Do you mean you're 24 weeks?

Anyways, I know a girl who stopped taking them because the iron in the prenatals made her constipated and bloated. Her midwife said it was fine as long as she ate a well balanced meal everyday and got enough folic acid in.

Pretty sure this is something you should ask your OB or midwife. It's different for each woman. You could be low in iron for all we know. I'm sorry you're going through bad morning sickness!

  • My prenatals made my morning sickness worse too so I stopped taking them and focused on getting extra vitamins from my diet. I asked my midwife about it and they said it was just fine. In fact, they told me it's better to get the things your baby needs to grow from whole foods instead of from artificial vitamins.
Just to be sure, I had the genetic testing done and my baby is growing and thriving perfectly! I think whole foods are way better than a pill, but double check with your OB or midwife to make sure they're on the same page.
  • I couldn't take them during my first trimester because they caused lots of nausea. Instead, I took a couple kids Flinstones vitamins every day, which (for whatever reaso) didn't make me nauseous at all. In fact, they were delicious :)
  • I took gummy ones from Target all of 1st tri. They were delicious and the only ones I could stomach!
  • Mine made me sick too but I found that as long as I didn't eat a half hour before or after I could keep them down.

This! Take the gummies. Easy to eat and they don't have iron. I just hate swallowing pills, so it's been gummies all the way for me.

I third this. I do probably forget to take them like once a week or so, though. But gummies were the only thing that we're going to happen up until a couple of weeks ago, and I'm 25 weeks.
  • I was on the prenatal gummies, but my dr told me to switch to children's Flintstone vitamins so i got the iron supplement.

  • Lucky for me I didn't have any morning sickness....the prenatals were the only thing that made me nauseous. I found out early on if I took them after dinner instead of the morning, I was fine. Seems like they work differently for everyone.
  • My problem is more that I forget to take them and sometimes I will go two or three days before I take them.
  • I had trouble taking mine but got a prescription for a very small prenatal which hasn't given me any trouble!

To be honest, I think as long as I eat healthy, why taking a pill or gummie then? I get so much more out of fresh fruits and veggies, drinking plenty of water and get my fiber and protein. Don't get me wrong, I do take them here and there, but I'm more causious on drinking soda and eating junk food... Who knows what's all in that stuff anyway...
  • I too am taking the gummies and also did with DS. Last time I supplemented with some iron pills too but I'm skipping that. As hard as it is I'm also taking DHA every day (in addition to what is in the gummies). I will continue to do so through breastfeeding also. I think I eat very well but I want to make sure to get enough folic acid and other nutrients. The baby is sucking everything out of me and I need nourishment too! I would recommend everyone do all they can to take their vitamins. It's important.
  • I'm on my second pregnancy- first time struggled a lot with morning sickness and vitamins. My doc told me to just take folic until I could stomach the prenatal. This time- I honestly just avoided them all together the first 3 months and now maybe only remember once a week and am now so constipated most of the time that I am again avoiding them!

It's probably fine. I just think of it as an insurance policy, just in case I'm not getting enough of something. It's the folic acid early on that's hugely important to get, but by now, good nutrition is probably efficient, but sometimes it's not happening on the daily.
I think if you have really extreme morning sickness or HG it's important to take supplements, but remember two things- one, supplements are fake. It's always better to get your nutrients from food and even folic acid can be found in great quantities in real food. Two, most supplements don't actually have what they say they have in them. For example, fish oil is often made from rancid fish and fillers. Make sure your supplements are listed as trustworthy.
  • I was taking  Target brand prenatals, but early in first tri they weren't making me feel so good.  Then I switched to Target gummy prenatals, and they were fine, except for the fact that I didn't notice they were lemon flavored before I started taking them.  Gross.

  • I have not taken prenatal vitamins due to other reasons but have taken my folic acid and those are perfectly fine. For me it was outweighing the pros and the cons and discussing with my OB that helped with my decision.

  • I made sure to take them as soon as we decided to start trying to get pregnant again because I was dealing with a very stressful work situation and knew I wasn't eating as well as I should (lots of fast-food due to commuting).  After the first month, I started craving "green smoothies"  (which is very different from my first pregnancy) and I'm confident that I'm getting enough nutrients now that my diet has cleaned up.  All tests are good and I feel good, so I'm not concerned.  If my diet goes off track, I'll take vitamins but as long as I eat well my doctor is fine with it.

I set a reminder on my phone to remember to take them.  Since I sometimes eat a light breakfast and they make me sick if I haven't eaten much, my reminder goes off at 1:00.  By that time, I have finished lunch and still have a full stomach.
  • re: forgetting -- I keep my bottle next to my laptop at home so it's right there, staring me in the face, and when I get to the point where I don't want to field any more annoying emails for a while (which takes, oh, about two nanoseconds on the average night...), suddenly pausing to choke down some vitamins seems like a really excellent excuse to take a break.

I started taking prenatals about 3 months before we started trying at the advice of my doctor and they have never bothered my stomach. It has become such a habit that I rarely forget, but I don't sweat it if I do. Personally, I don't have the knowledge or expertise about nutrition to ensure that I can get the right nutrients every day and so it is worth it to me to take vitamins even if they are "fake," I just use brands I can trust.

How much folic acid is in ice cream again??
@yogahh as long as you have a pint a day you're definitely getting enough, no supplements needed!

And then if you eat an entire family size box of Kraft Mac and cheese you've taken care of your protein for the day! I'm sure after this and a pint of ice cream your calcium is taken care of as well. Winning!

This little girl loves kale and spinach smoothies! Normally, the thought would make me gag and when I was pregnant with my son all I wanted was cheeseburgers and ice cream. But ever since before I got the official BFP, I have been CRAVING dark leafy greens! I pop them in the Nutribullet my sister got me for Christmas with berries, frozen peaches, frozen mango chunks, Greek yogurt and some almond milk. YUMMMM! If I am feeling super fancy, I might drizzle some raw local honey in there and a pinch of cayenne just for fun! FTR, I still try to take my prenatal gummies every night, but if I forget, I forgive myself.

PS- can I just say how insanely blessed I am to have such a loving and supportive family? The moment I said I wanted to make my health a priority, the troops assembled and they have made it happen, from getting me a Fitbit and Nutribullet to checking in daily and holding me accountable for workouts and healthy eating. When I tried to decline the expensive fitness gifts, my younger sister said "Oh, that's not for you. That's for my little niece in there. I take my job as Auntie very seriously and I will do anything to make sure she is as healthy and happy as can be. And...I guess I care about you too..."

  • I ate very healthy before pregnancy (chicken breast, lots of veggies, greek yogurt, fruit) but all got on my bad list during the first trimester. My doctor said I can skip the vitamins, that all I needed was folic acid and iron. I took them throughout the first trimester but they are making me gag HARDCORE the 2nd.
