3rd Trimester Tea

Do any STMs+ have experience with this third trimester tea craze? I've been reading about it and can only find positive things - but my cynical side has me saying, "there must be some naysayers out there". I mean it can't be as magic as everyone is saying, otherwise I would think we'd hear more about it and doctors would promote it more. Anyway, I ordered some to give it a try because it seems like there is nothing (but the cost of the tea) to lose, but I'm interested to hear if any of you have experience with it.

Thanks!

Re: 3rd Trimester Tea

  • I dont think you would hear more Bout it from doctors....they get paid to push pharmaceuticals remember lol
  • Loading the player...
  • But cant hurt!! Im drinking it :)

True! You make a great point :)
  • I don't know what "third trimester" tea is, but I've drinking raspberry leaf tea for the past few weeks - I read it's supposed to tone the uterine muscles and make labor a smoother, maybe quicker (!) process. It's delicious, and I'm a big tea drinker in general. My last baby was two weeks early, and I was drinking it then too...just sayin'...
  • Um, doctors don't get paid to push pharmaceuticals. That's illegal. Most MDs don't believe in alternatives medicine based on their training or are not as versed in it. Don't confuse corruption with lack of knowledge.

  • Do your research, some herbal teas can induce labor, if you aren't full term I don't recommend it.

each one is different- but most of them are just a blend of pregnancy safe herbs to help relax your body and help supplement the areas that need the most support .
I think mine has raspberry leaf, mint, lavender, and ... I can't remember the last one. I'm out or I would look it up. Basically it just makes you feel nice.
  • Lurking from March 16:

My OB knows that I am a birth doula (I've worked with her a few times)

She actually brought up tea at my 30 weeks appt.
She asked if I had started, I told her I hadn't yet.
We talked about the studies and which brand was safest.
So far the only negative study we have both come across is from the 50's done on rats. It said nettle and alfalfa (common ingredients in some pregnancy teas) were not safe for pregnancy. However, they studied the whole plant, not just the part used by tea companies.

She considers these ingredients safe based off positive and neutral studies she has read. She said to be extra safe there are a couple smaller companies that make pregnancy teas without those 2 ingredients if they make you uncomfortable.

I'm not sure my OB would have brought up teas had she not known me personally as a doula and ex-nurse turned massage therapist. I think, due to lack of large medical studies done on herbs, that the risk of suggesting them is too high for medical practitioners. At least in the US. We are sue happy here, and being an OB is risky enough as one of the most prosecuted forms of MD there is.
  • P.s. Please please please tell your doctor or midwife if you start any teas or herbal supplements! Lots of these can interact with any other drugs you may be taking or may take in the future. Your healthcare professionals need to know so they can avoid possible drug interaction.

Plus, I know some tea ingredients can lower blood sugar or blood pressure... This can have very negative side effects for you as we all react in different ways to any medication.

  • Sorry ..we will use the word " sponsored " hahah and to be fair none of us really know what they do and dont do...
  • I've been drinking the Earth Mama Angel Baby 3rd Trimester tea since the start of my 3rd trimester (started with 1 cup a day and now that I'm in the last couple of weeks, I'm drinking it twice a day).

Although I'm still only .5cm dilated at 38+2, my midwife says I have a "very soft cervix", which I definitely attribute to the tea.  She said if I end up needing to be induced, I'm a great candidate because of the softness.

  • I started drinking it a few days ago. I'm curious to see how well it works. I didn't drink any with my last pregnancy. I go to a midwife and she sells it right in the birth house.

Actually many doctors DO accept money directly from pharmaceutical companies. You can look it up in a public registry. It's not a secret. ETA I don't know about the tea thing. But I would drink it if I had some here. Not sure if I'll bother to buy it, though.

  • Let me clarify, they cannot be "wooed"'or paid to prescribe. That's illegal as of recent.

  • I had been drinking the earth mama third tri but ran out. I showed the label to my midwife beforehand and she said it was fine. I'm drinking just the raspberry leaf now because It was easier to find.

Definitely recommend this book for anyone interested in knowing more about dr's being sponsored & advertising for companies. I'm in the healthcare field, & it's not illegal at private hospitals and private practices. Even many researchers at huge universities that publish scientific articles are paid by pharmaceuticals. But that's why it's important to have a good dr you trust and know is excellent.

As for tea, I've been drinking the earth angel 3rd trimester one for weeks and noticed nothing.... Just that it's tea. So who knows.

  • I did with my second baby. 17.5 hour labor at 41 1/2 weeks. ;)

This was what I was actually waiting to hear. Thank you! I knew it wasn't a magic bullet answer to a "quick and easy" labor but I couldn't find ANYWHERE or ANYONE  on the entire internet that would admit to it - I've only seen glowing reviews. I imagine it still doesn't hurt to try, but I'm trying to level set my expectations, so this is very helpful. Thanks!
  • I started RRLT at 36 weeks last time, had a < 5 hour labor at 38 weeks. lol

No clue if it did or didn't help... but it's not gross like the mother's milk tea!

Totally doesn't hurt to try. For sure! I'm actually doing the thing where you eat 6 dates a day for the last month of this pregnancy, because I also think it's just kind of fun to try something like that out:)

  • I don't think you'll find much in the way of real evidence, good or bad. To truly know if it shortens labor, etc, you'd really need a large scale randomized controlled trial, which isn't likely for stuff like this. I personally am in camp "it can't hurt to try" (just like I am with encapsulation), and so I've been drinking some RRL and pregnancy tea.

Also, I don't think this is a "craze" like you say. Things like RRL have been recommended for many many years.

I guess by "craze" I was more alluding to the fact that I could only find the glowing, positive endorsements and no one saying otherwise which seemed too off to me. I definitely agree with you on the sample size, so was just looking to crowdsource my own data to see if there was anyone out there that could negate what I've seen elsewhere.
  • I'm going to buy some today 38 weeks 1cm dilated 0 effaced. Hopefully this helps
  • I did buy some. I'll probably be drinking it in the morning or at night whenI am craving a warm drink like usual :)
  • I figured why not try it. Got some today and it is delicious. Tastes like trader joes peppermint tea. Yum.
  • @hbg8711 I bought some the other day and started taking it. I feel as tho my BH have picked up but nothing consistent. But I've only been doing it 2 days. Let me know how it goes for you!
  • What tea are you guys getting? I love tea and I'd be curious to try this

@Kimbarbour08 I bought the earth mama third trimester tea from babies r us for $5.99 16packs
  • I got mighty Aphrodite from David's tea. It has the red raspberry leaf in it which is the magic ingredient. That's what's in the one posted above too. I found I didn't like the taste as much when it was the RRL all by itself
