Flying in an airplane next week :/

Hi everyone. I just found out that I need to take a business trip next week for 2 days and will be traveling by airplane. I am not thrilled by this news. I will be at the end of 6 weeks/starting my 7th week of pregnancy. Has anyone traveled this early in their pregnancy? I am slightly concerned about the body scan machines at the airport too. I read up on it and know it is supposedly safe or I could always opt for the pat down instead.I may be with colleagues though so that could be tricky trying to communicate wanting a pat down. Honestly, I don't know if I want to do that anyways. Seems like a hassle. BUT, I really want to do what is best for my baby and am not going to put my pride or keeping a secret before the health of my child.

Any similar situations or opinions on what to do? I pray I don't start getting morning sickness or too sleepy in my meetings! LOL. *Must think positive* :)

  • Flying in the first and second trimester is considered safe unless your doctor says otherwise. Make sure you're walking or doing leg exercises at your seat to keep your circulation flowing and stay hydrated. As for the body scanners, I hate them and hate the idea of a pat down so I don't have much advice for you. If you choose to opt out and you're with colleagues, just tell the TSA that you'd like to opt out because you are uncomfortable with them. You don't have to mention that you're pregnant.

  • I'm pretty sure I went through them a handful of times my 1st pregnancy. My OB had said they were fine. I always tried to see if one of the lines was using the old metal detectors and I'd go to that line if possible so you can try that.

    Good luck!

  • I actually flew to Miami and back to CA this past weekend and I'm 7 weeks 1 day. I simply requested a pat down instead of a body scan just to be extra safe :) Overall everything was a-okay! Good luck!
  • I flew last week as well, and to be honest, the body scan thing didn't even cross my mind! I guess there are so many potential hazards out there that I'm not even thinking about. I ended up going through the old school metal detectors anyway since I was traveling with my service dog, and he can't go through the newer scanners.
  • I flew quite a bit my first trimester with DD. Never had any issues.

  • I flew last week and again this week and was fine. I opted out of the body scanner and asked for a pat down. You'll be fine!
  • I did a bit of research into the body scanners last pregnancy and talked to our Radiation Safety Officer at work (hospital) about it and he said it's totally safe so try not to worry :)
  • Turns out I don't have to travel now! =) I appreciate all of the advice though in case this comes up again soon. I do tend to travel a lot in the summer and probably have a few trips coming up in March/April so this info still applies.
