Sleep regression?? Help!

So my 3.5 month old might be going through a sleep regression based on my observations this past week. First, he wasn't napping at all. We worked on that, and now he is taking 3 good 1-1.5 hour naps, with the last one ending around 6pm. I put him in the Merlin Magic Sleep Suit for naps and bedtime. Now, when bed time rolls around (9pm), he won't go to sleep. Last night, he didn't fall asleep until 1:45AM, and he wakes up every hour or so. I don't think my hubs and I can do this every night. We do have a bed time routine (bottle, book, cuddles) and we try to put him down when he's drowsy, not asleep. Any help would be most welcome! Thanks!

Re: Sleep regression?? Help!

  • I don't have anything to add just that I think we're in this too. LO will be three months on the 24 and he went from sleeping 4-6 hours during the first stretch of the night to fighting all together and barely sleeping on his own. And he used to fight naps all the time but now is trying to nap more (I'm letting him get all he can lol)

  • Have you spoken to the pediatrician? Maybe he has reflux or something that's waking him?
  • We're in the same boat. One thing we have tried the last two nights is an earlier bed time. We took out the evening cat nap she used to take and are doing bed time between 7:30 and 8:00 instead of 9:00. Not sure if it's what helped but the last two nights were much improved.
  • We are going through the same thing. My son is also 3.5 months so maybe it's just an age thing? I hope this ends soon, for everyone! Hang in there mamma
  • Same here! LO is almost 15 weeks and we've been going through it for about a week and a half now. Takes him longer to fall asleep some nights, and almost every night now he can't seem to stay asleep throughout the night. He was sleeping from 9:30/10:00-6:00, but now he wakes up two or three times. I've been bringing him in the bed with me and letting him fall asleep and stay asleep next to me while nursing. I've never wanted to co-sleep, but it seems to be the easiest and most beneficial way for both of us to get some sleep. I'm thinking it's an age thing because I saw another post about this exact topic, and lots of responses from moms going through the same thing with babies almost the same age. Hopefully it is just a phase and will pass quickly! Hang in there, mommas!

The four month sleep regression can happen anywhere between 3 and 5 months.  If you check the September board there are tons of moms dealing with it or coming out of it.

Basically, when babies are mastering new skills their sleep is often affected.  They practice these new behaviors and skills over and over again in their little brains until they are mastered (at which point sleep generally returns to normal).  It can be difficult to fall/stay asleep during this time much like adults find it hard to settle into sleep before a big meeting at work or an exciting trip the next day.

The four month regression can be the most difficult because the skills that they are working on are largely cognitive.  When baby is learning to crawl, pull up or walk Mom and Dad can help by encouraging lots of practice during the day but with cognitive skills there isn't a whole lot we can do except ride it out.  Read some of the threads related to this on earlier boards and you may find some help there, or at least a lot of moms to commiserate with :)

ETA: My biggest piece of advice for dealing with this regression is just to do what works to get everyone a little sleep. If that means using a swing, going back to a pack n play near mom whatever. There were several nights that I slept on the couch while DS2 was in the swing during his regression.  When it was over he went back to crib easily with no adjustment period and started going down drowsy but awake even better than he was before.  Don't worry about back tracking, typically LO will go back to sleeping normally pretty easily when its all over.
