How long between feedings?

Sorry if there's a post on this, I couldn't find anything.
How long is your little one going between feedings? My babe is 2 weeks old and still around 2 hours, we are EBF. She has longer stretches at night, 3-4 hours. But sometimes it's 1-2 at anytime of day just depending on her mood. Just curious what everyone else is working with, and how old when they go longer?

Thanks.

Re: How long between feedings?

  • My baby is 2.5 weeks and goes max 3 hrs at night between a feeding, maybe once if I'm lucky. All day she goes about an hour max between feedings and starts clusterfeeding about 4am. I hope she will eventually go a bit longer, a three hour break would be amazing right now.

  • DD is wildly inconsistent but she sleeps more than she feeds most days. Especially during the day. It's very common for her to sleep 3 hours between feedings and even then I'm waking her up to eat because I'm nervous she's not getting enough. Then there are usually a few hours a night where she cluster feeds every 45 mins or so. She'll be 2 weeks tomorrow and we EBF. BUT we can't really count on anything because she plays by no one's rules...it's her world, we're just living in it. :p
  • Yeah Olive is 5.5 weeks old and still eats at least every 2 hours. Sometimes more if she's cluster feeding. At night she'll go anywhere from 2-4 hours.

I let her tell me. I don't set alarms anymore.
  • My baby is 5.5 weeks and she sleeps for a 4-5 hour stretch at night. The rest of the day she eats about every 2-3 hours. She's been sleeping the 4-5 hours at night since around 4 weeks. The only downside is that I usually wake up after 3 hours and desperately need to pump, but that's faster than feeding and getting LO back to sleep.
  • My LO is 4.5 weeks ebf and he eats every 2-3 hours during the day but I still wake him up if at the 3 hr mark if he doesn't wake up on his own. I just started letting him going for a 4 hour stretch at night.
  • There's definitely no normal with us. I have a 4.5 week old. She is EBF. Sometimes she eats every hour on the hour for 45 minutes and sometimes I have to wake her after 3 hours in the day to nurse. At night she'll get one good 4 hour stretch, and by that point I want her to nurse to help relieve me!

No 2 babies can really be compared. :)
  • Anywhere from 2-4 hours is normal for DD.
  • We go no more than 3 hours during the day, and during the evening we let her wake up when she wants to eat which is usually 5-6 hours.
  • Every hour. After a nap, 1 and a half. At night theres 1 long 3-5 hour stretch, and couple 2 hours ones.

Sophie is 5w, EBF & eats much more during the day. Sometimes almost constantly for 2 hours straight (on 40min off 20 min on 40 min), sometimes every 3 hours for only 10-15 min. At night she goes 2.5-5.5 hours between feedings. I'm loving the nights she sleeps 5+ hours but when we get up my boobs feel like they are going to explode!
  • DS is 6 weeks old and eats 9 times a day or more. Spacing is different each day but he knows if he didn't get his 9th feeding in and will let you know lol. I EBF on demand so at times he will eat every hour for a couple feedings usually late afternoon starting around 4:00. During the day I don't let him go longer then 3 hrs and aim for 2 hrs if possible or else he doesn't sleep as well at night. At night he is sleeping 1 6ish hr stretch and another 4ish hour stretch. I don't mind being chained to him during the day as long as I can get a good nights sleep
  • LO is 5.5 weeks and EBF. During the day he feeds every 2 to 3 hours and very recently at night he will go 4 to 6 hours. 6 hours was tough on me, I checked him constantly and my boobs hurt, I didn't want to pump not knowing if he would wake up 10 minutes later.

But I digress, OP at 3 weeks it was 2 to 3, sometimes more frequently. I have always gone by his cues.
  • LO is 5 weeks old and he gets 2-3 formula bottles a day and the rest are pumped milk. I do 2 bottles of pumped milk then 1 bottle of formula and repeat.  He goes anywhere from 2-4 hours.  Mostly on the 3-4 hour end.  Rarely will he need another bottle within 2 hours.  Within a 24 hour period he eats about 8-9 times a day.
  • My little guy is 6 weeks old and he goes about every 3-4 hours during the day but then around 6 pm he starts clustering feeding and he sleeps 6-7 hrs straight during the night. He's actually now taken to my husband's schedule and wakes up every morning at 4:20 which is 10 minutes before his daddy's alarm. This has worked out good since my husband can have some bonding time before he goes to work and it gives me a little me time before hubs leave for his 14 hr day.
  • At night DS goes 4-5 hours without eating. During the day it's every 2 hours usually and in the evening he cluster feeds for hours

Every 3 hours here. LO is EFF. I don't let her go no more than 3.5 hrs during the day just so she's not sleeping all day and making up for it at night. During the night, we let her sleep as long as she wants, but she's usually up at the 3-4 hr mark. She's 3w1d.

ETA she also cluster feeds at night starting around 5:30pm.

  • We are at the 4 week mark and she has slept 6-7 hours in a row for the last four nights. Before that it was every 3 hours like clockwork.
I am exclusively pumping and substituting with formula for the feedings she is demanding more.

During the day she goes 3-5 hours be between feedings. I have noticed that for every ounce of milk she has she ends up lasting that many hours until the next feeding. She cluster feeds from 5pm- 9pm.

  • Usually 2 hours daytime and night i wake her no later than 3.5 hrs. Or else my breasts feel like they will pop.
  • So, I feel like if there is no formula involved these LOs just don't sleep as long at night? I would LOVE 5-6 hours of sleep!! Haha but she's only gone 4 at the most. But better than nothing! Most of the time 2 hours between feedings during the day and 3-4 at night!
  • My little eats every 2-3 hours during the day and goes about 4-5 at night. How long does your babes usually eat for?
  • @dmendo01 breastfed babies will eat more often than formula fed because they metabolize and digest breast milk faster. That being said, my 4.5 week old breastfed baby has slept for stretches of 6 hours some nights. She regularly goes 4-5 hours. But all babies are different, and nursing at night is super important. Babies consume 20% of their daily oz/calories at night!

My baby is 7.5 weeks old and once she hit 7 weeks she has been going down about 7:30-8 pm and sleeping until 3-4 am....so about 8 hrs then again until 6:30-8 am. She is EBF and I've just been pumping around 10-11 pm when I go to bed. During the day it ranges 1 1/2-3 1/2 hours, sometimes more frequent in early evening but still around 8 feedings a day. So there is a turning point where they sleep more at night! My supply doesn't appear to be affected by going 6 hrs between pumping/feedings at night. Took a night of leaky boobs, one of me snoozing my alarm 3 times to pump (which woke the baby), and one of me waking the stirring baby when I was nervous about her wanting to eat when I realized I needed to just let the baby sleep! Now I have not had leakage but sleep with breast pads just in case.
  • My little girl is 3 weeks old and eats just about every 2.5 hrs during the day and then wakes up one time during the night (between 11pm & 7am - typically right around 3am). She is a really good little eater, although I do sometimes have trouble keeping her awake during the day to make sure she's getting a full feed.
  • Omg I have a three week old too and at night she sleeps for maybe 3 hrs, feeds, then sleeps and feeds every two hours, so I get about one hour each time. Tell me your magical ways. @MRSashleylittle
