So Im having a cvs at 11 weeks and have questions!

I was told by my doctor and genetic counselor that because pf our genetic issue ( both carriers for pompe disease) that I should have a cvs at 11 weeks. I know I will get to talk to my doctor more about it as the time approaches, but I have many questions on my mind. ( what was it like, was it painful, risky in any way, how fast you got results, etc) If anyone has had cvs testing on a previous pregnancy and would like to share experiences, please do!
I'm a big chicken and I'm making myself all nervous right now! Thanks ladies!!

I've never had a CVS but I have had an amnio.  I had it done at 35 weeks and it hurt a little bit but not bad.  I was a little crampy the rest of the day and was told to take it easy.  My MFM stated a risk of 1/300 of losing the pregnancy.  Although, at 35 weeks it would have just meant spontaneous labor not loss of the baby.  I'm not sure if the risk is the same for a CVS.  Your doctor should be able to tell you.  We will be having genetic testing done as well and will probably do an amnio.  Out of curiosity, why did they decide on a CVS vs. an amnio?  I was under the impression that it's not as accurate as an amnio.  I'm just wondering if we should think about doing a CVS if the results are similar but the risk might be less? I won't seem my MFM for another 3-4 weeks since I haven't graduated from my RE yet so I can't ask her until then.

  • Thanks @Sarafuss for sharing. They told me that a cvs would be better in this situation because it can be done as early as 11 weeks and therefore I would get results at 12 and a half weeks. They told me the earliest an amnio could be done would be 15 weeks. Knowing earlier would be helpful in this situation, because it's a pretty bad genetic disorder and we would have decisions to make :(  they didn't tell me anything about accuracy of it though. I will ask more questions at my follow up. This was recommended by the genetics counselor at the hospital.

  • I'm really glad you asked @KarenBeth714 , I'll be following. I don't have experience with this yet either.
  • @KarenBeth714 thanks for explaining that. It sounds like our situations are similar. Our last baby had a fatal chromosomal disorder so we would like to find out as soon as possible. Good luck to you!

  • @Sarafuss  I'm so sorry for your previous loss and wish you luck this time.. Did they offer you and IVF in the future? They said for us it was a possibility.. but then I got the bfp. Now I just can't think past the testing and the waiting.  Will be thinking of you too.

  • @KarenBeth714 yes my RE suggested IVF with PGD but our insurance won't cover it so we just went ahead with Femara + Ovidrel and TI.  I'll be so happy to be past this part.  I'm so anxious!

  • I had the procedure and was very comfortable with the process. We met with our genetic counselor first to go over thing in great details and to ask any lingering questions. The procedure itself only took a few minutes. The nurse first does an ultrasound to get the position of the baby. Then, The doctor inserts the instrument and there is a little pressure on your cervix. But you can see the entire procedure and your little one on a monitor. Results in about ten days. After, I had a little bleeding but it went away in a day or two. If you have any questions, Just ask.

I had one done last pregnancy due to problems the doctor saw on the ultrasounds. Basically @melissaagriffin described the same process I went through. I had some cramping during the procedure and bleed some afterwards for the next day. The procedure went fine. Best of luck.
  • I had a CVS at 10.5 weeks with my son... It wasn't very painful and got the results the next day! I knew very early on that the baby was healthy... It was totally worth it for me! In my opinion, it's nothing to be scared of - just make sure the performing doctor is very reputable! Good luck and try not to worry!
