Nursery dirty diaper smell ?

Hey ladies, havent had my baby yet but was wondering if you have any experience keeping the smells to a minimum. Obviously putting the diaper out in the trash immediatly would help. But any other tricks or devices:)

Re: Nursery dirty diaper smell ?

  • I have never used those diaper genies etc. But honestly after every diaper change they go immediately into the dumpster after being tied up in those little bags. Besides that, I always light candles or use febreeze.

I keep the trash bin just outside the room. It's also a smaller bin so it fills quicker. Then anytime I walk by it and smell it I know it's time to change it out, no excuses!
  • We used a diaper genie and just emptied it frequently.
  • We use the Arm and Hammer Diaper Pail with DS1 and love it!! Never had an issue with diaper smells in the nursery.

  • I cloth diaper, so I might have a different perspective, but an open bag or pail tends to help because it lets the air get at the diapers and prevents smells from getting worse.  Also, there's this awesome product called Bac-Out that I spray on my diapers in the pail.  I also use it on the pail after rinsing the pail out.  It has enzymes that eat at the bacteria and make smells disappear.

With disposable diapers, you can double wrap them in plastic grocery bags before throwing them in the pail.  That would definitely help.

This plus a carbon filter deodorizer.

If you breastfeed the poop diapers don't smell until you start introducing solids. That said we still had a diaper genie in DD's room out of convenience. Once she started on solids we definitely emptied it more often or would just throw the poop diaper out in the garage trash can and use it just for the pee diapers.

This ^^^. My sister had a baby around the same time as me and she formula fed whereas I breastfed....big difference in smell. Anyways we always used the diaper genie and never had a problem with smell
  • Take out the trash frequently

You know I've always heard this but I'm terrified what formula fed smelled like because my first LO's diapers were smelly and blow outs and she was ebf.
  • I know people who SWEAR by the diaper genie. We got a different brand (because I liked the color lol) decor color or something like that..but it looks like the same concept of keeping the smell contained..hopefully it'll do the trick!
  • DS was FF and we never really had much of an issue either until he started on solids. We used a diaper genie and never had a problem with the smell. We would empty it at least once a week.

We have a diaper genie, used it with #1 and have a second one for the nursery. Works really well and just gets emptied as part of the trash run round the house each week. I have a super sensitive nose and rarely smell it.
  • We take the poopy diapers outside immediately. If the weather I s bad, I just put it in a grocery bag and leave it on the porch in a inconspicuous corner til I go out or the weather improves. We moved the actual trash can closer to the backdoor to make it easier. I don't like the diaper genies... But my experiences might be tainted by a friend who did not empty it nearly enough (their house always smelled of poop!).

What!?!? With my babies, the BF poop don't smell like "poop," but they still have an awful, rancid, spoiled milk smell!! I think I hate it more than big kid poop! Am I the only one!?!! I am shocked by this and the likes that it got - very curious:)

  • I don't think you need a diaper genie or anything like that. We just use/used an open waste basket and empty it every couple days. Never any smell issues.

I somewhat agree. While poop after starting solids was definitely more pungent, EBF poop is still poop. Poop stinks. We ended up using the diaper pail only for wet diapers after a couple of weeks.

  • I'm a FTM so I can't attest to this eliminating smells but our plan is to use the arm and hammer little poop bags (they sell them at babies r us but they are basically the same thing is a dog poop bag) for each diaper and tie it up and place it in the Uppa diaper pail. The pail claims to eliminate odors.

Yes we never really had any smelly diapers til introducing solids. I think its an "in general" thing and as always every baby is different. Doing a quick search on it says that it could be different depending how frequently your baby poops (how long the poop has been in their intestines) or potentially a food allergy or intolerance. We'll see with DS if we get lucky again with no stinky diapers for 6 months because while they may be really gross to clean up at least it doesn't knock your socks off. DD was always a VERY healthy pooper  .
  • I love my diaper genie ... If it starts to smell I use regular white vinegar and water to clean and sterilize it and it takes the smell away. We started putting poopy diapers right outside in a trash can though because the smell can get unbearable after a while
  • .... Diaper genie in the closet of the bedroom, take out 1-2 x's a week. If breastfed, diapers do still smell but nowhere near as bad as formula. Ugh. I was so bummed when we had to switch to formula for the smell! haha.

Keeping a wall scent or something like that also helps. Honestly, though, taking the diapers out frequently enough will keep it from smelling.
